--> Kolb-List message posted by: BICUM@aol.com
Hey everyone,
I was just waiting on ya'll to sorta nail this thing down. I knew JW was
gonna step up. Signing up for vacation right now at work. Have not hit that
point of being able to just make my own little independent schedule i.e. retired.
I'll plan on being somewhere around UT25 on May 14th. John H - is that the
same as "the Gouldings"? Never been there. Do they have a lot of gators and
bayous around there?
This is gonna be great. Did I mention how much fun I had on our last little
adventure? Anyone on the list kinda waffling on a go -no go decision, GOOOO!
Flying with these guys is a blast. I know Gary H has his name in the hat.
How bout Steve Green? That Tennessee humor is something.
Santa Claus is bringing me a new 72" Taper tip Warp Drive prop. Won't have
to carry MEK and extra tapes for the IVO. New exhaust is on. Squack sheet is
getting short.
Anyone that needs a RON point around Baton Rouge, let me know. My plane is
at New Roads, LA (HZR). Treat you to two free ferry boat rides, a hot meal,
and a shower.
Getting excited. Really looking forward to it. Be great to see Gary H, John
H, John W, and I hope Steve Green again. Will also get to meet some new
fantastic Kolbers.
Thanks & be careful,

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "James, Ken" <KDJames@berkscareer.com>
I'm current working on the wings of MKIII Xtra and the "book say's to drill
fabric rivet holes about every 4" on the ribs"
My question is this Does this include the bottom of the rib? ( don't think
so but just checking)
Do I start from the front of the rib and work to the back?
Or is it only on the top from the back ( trailing edge) to just before the
leading edge?
My instruction manual does not have a location pic of the rivets hole and
the only info is on page 45 of the written manual..
I have made a drilling jig the slips over the rib and centers of the hole I
just don't want to drill to few or to many holes.
Thanks
Ken

Now this is getting interesting. A variation of the Firefly designed

the kind of thing that could get me back to building.

Hi John B.
I was starting to wonder if you had forgot to check your email. Real glad
to have your hat in the ring.
Gouldings and UT25 are the same place.
Any chance you can get away for Sun n'Fun next April?
When I get my new engine working, I'm going to take you up on the ferry boat
rides.

Thanks for the WEB site I should have found it myself, but now I'm even
denser than before
From Kolb site on
Wing Covering
( This said top of full ribs )
Drill only the full ribs on the top side. Do not drill through the tubing as
it will render the rib unusable. Drill approx. half way.
Do not drill the rib where the Gusset is attached. Leave =BD" space from the
rivets for the gusset. This may alter the 4" spacing slightly but that is
OK.
(This said Bottom of full also )
There are (2) Top False Ribs and (1) Bottom false Rib between each Full Rib.
Drill the Bottom False Rib on the bottom side. Do Not Drill the Top False
Rib. Drill the full length of the Wing Rib on the bottom side also.
After gluing the fabric on, use a soldering iron to burn a hole in the
fabric at the rivet holes. After applying the1/2" tape, burn the holes
again.
So both top and bottom of full ribs just double checking be fore I go a
drilling
Thanks
Ken

Ken,
Yes, this does include the bottom of the ribs, as well as the bottom false
ribs between the full ribs. My bottom false ribs have four evenly spaced
rivets, and the bottom of the full ribs have eleven rivets. From my photo
album, it looks like the top of the full ribs have seven, maybe eight
rivets, they are evenly spaced starting 3 or four inches from the rear spar
working forward to where the curve in the wing starts. The top side false
ribs DO NOT get rivets. The general rule is to only put rivets where the
ribs are straight. Make all your rivets in a straight line spanwise by
using a chalkline.
>
> Do I start from the front of the rib and work to the back?
I started at the rear spar and worked forward and placed the bottom false
rib rivets inline with the main rib ones, measure carefully and make sure
the rivet lines do not interfere with gussets and rib attatch rivets on
either false or full ribs. My front bottom rivets are further from the front
of the wing than my rear most rivets are from the rear of the wing, but the
spacing between rivets is consistant except for places where interferance
with other structural rivets forced me to vary rivet line spacing a little.
>
> Or is it only on the top from the back ( trailing edge) to just before the
> leading edge?
On the top, you only put rivets from the rear until just before the curve
begins, I recall that the fabric rivets end pretty much on top of the wing
spar.
>

I also had to get advice from this list and what I had seen at a Kolb open
house about this area.

I also had to make a second drill jig that allowed for the rib gussets in a
couple places, here is where you really have to be careful not to put fabric
rivets too close to rib rivets. You may not need this offset jig, but the
one you made will make the job a snap.

John J.
You flatter me pard..and I dont deserve it!
But your post reminds me of a feature that I've seen in some magazines that
I think might be of use here . The Wish List! and with the xmas season at
hand...it seems appropriate fot the time. Also It might have some benefit
to TNK company...kind of a lobbying effort...or input you might say.
Everyone might put there best suggestions into the hat, and we could forward
it to Linda at TNK. With Matt's archive's it would be easy to copy em all
into one doc to send.
I have changed the subject line accordingly, and here is my contribution.
Surely Santa follows this list don't he?

2. If you are going to offer the spring steel landing gear legs and charge
$400.00+ for them please build them properly. Weld a steel tube to the
socket end of the legs like the Old Kolb did so that the gear legs don't
damage the landing gear sockets.

Gee Richard,
I wouldn't think too much if their comment connected the engine to it
origination roots. Better than our UL's being referred to as flying
monkeys. I am surprised they recognized it and made the association. I
refer to my engine as a weed wacker....makes about the same irritating noise.

You probably know this but better to say something early - you only drill
thru the side of the tubing which the fabric would lay against, not clear
through the entire tube.

Hello John, all,
I've been out of the Kolb-list loop for a while, with lots going on, so hadn't
seen the Monument Valley 2004 discussion before now. I will plan to try to make
it up there again this year for some or all of it, since last year was such
a great time. Not sure if I will be able to bring the FF and trailer or not,
since I still have a few loose ends at this point... but would still enjoy seeing
everyone, plus some new faces, with or without my plane.... I might play
Larry's part this year... or maybe he will still be grounded... :) Sorry Lar,

Kolb Flyers,
After reading and comparing the different replies about the Monument Valley
experience,
I am planning on 14-17 May 2004 at Monument Valley.
I called the FSO's at Page, AZ and was told there are no facilities for camping
on the airfield and the closet place to eat is .8 miles away.
So far I have counted eleven Kolbers that have expressed interest in the trip.
The parking area is big and can hold some more airplanes. Spring 2004 flying
season
is just around the corner.
I have also updated my website to reflect Sun 'n Fun 2004 and the Alaska 2004
trips.
If a route goes near your place and you want to join up for a while it will
be fun.

Jim/All:
Hope you can make it. Won't be the same without you. Don't
worry about the airplane, you always have a ride in Miss
P'fer. Same applies to Big Lar and any other Kolber that
happens to show up ground bound. However, you will be in my
debt forever. Just kidding gang. Don't want to rile any of
our more sensitive list members.
Jim was sort of the spark plug and center of support for us
guys that became ground bound with no transportation once we
landed at Gouldings. His big enclosed trailer was also a
good meeting place during the day when the ole desert sun
came bearing down on us. Besides that, he was good company,
took good pics and videos, and loved to fly as much or more
than the rest of us.
We had a super crew at MV last year. Looking forward to
seeing all of them again and meeting some new ones.
I don't want to forget Arizona Dave Peltier either. He was
there with his BAMH (big ass motor home), trailer, MK III,
and wonderful companion who is also good company and an
excellent cook. The Peltier's had the whole crew over to
their BAMH for dinner one night.
I will never forget the first Saturday when everyone was
arriving MV. We were all down at the airstrip, ankle deep
in red desert dirt and dust when Mother Nature decided it
was time for a thunderstorm in the desert. All 10,000 of us
guys got in Dave's BAMH with red mud and all. He graciously
invited us in out of the rain, mud and all.
Looking forward to return to MV.

Hi Kolbers,
For the beginners out there like yours truly, watch out using MEK. I went to the
local ACE hardware to get some more Acetone cleaning solution and sitting next
to it was a can of MEK. I said to my self "Self this is the stuff they talk
about on the list" So I grabbed a can and came home to work on my plane. This
was Saturday afternoon. I had planned to fly the next day and was excited about
getting back up after my first solo 4 weeks prior. I noticed the MEK had a
strong odor and didn't think much about it. The next morning (Sunday) I awakened
excited about my planned flight, but felt real funny. Had the shakes like the
dickens. Could not figure out why I was so nervous. Thought maybe it was about
soloing agin. Then thought na haven't eat yet. Scarfed down a big ol'e Hardees
grilled chicken sandwich on the way to the airport. Thinking I was feeling
better but still shaking all over. As my CFI and I took off I was sweating
bullets. Made two bad landings and told him I just didn't feel good.
We talked about the things that affect our ability to pilot safely. So I just called
it a day and came home. Worked a bit Sunday afternoon and called it a day.
Last night Charley and I were trying to solve some issues with the kit and
he noticed the can of MEK sitting on the work bench. He said "Are you using that
stuff in here?" I said yep. He said they always rolled their planes out of
the hanger before using that because it will give you a terrible head ache and
you need plenty of ventilation. That's when it hit me. Having sold automotive
paint in the 80's and remembering the buzz I got off some of the 2 part stuff,
it must have been the MEK that had me high as a Georgia pine. I remember certain
chemicals from the automotive painting days causing permanate damage to the
central nervous system. There was one old guy that I used to call on that never
used a mask. And 90% of his life was shooting lacquer. Then some polyurethane's.
Before he retired he could not drink a glass of ice tea without a straw!!!!
So for the beginners out there careful with the chemicals. It took me 2 days to
come down.

Kolbers,
Here is a few for the "Tips" file.
1. After watching my wife file away at those finger nails, it hit me."Dang wonder
if those emery boards would work on the leading edge gussets that are sharp
as razor blades?" Stole a couple from her and tried them out. Work great! Its
like having emery cloth glued to a pop cycle stick.
2. This one came from Mark German. When inserting the inserts in the trailing edge
of the wing, use heater hose clamps to compress the inserts so they can be
slid in real easy.
3. If your building a Kolbra. This one also from mark. cut the inboard leading
edge tube of the wing at about 2 degrees to allow clearance to the windshield.
The plans don't call for it but the factory model is cut this way.
Headed of to the shop to uncover more mysteries about building a Kolbra!

Hi Tom/All:
I thought all the gang on the Kolb List was family?
Denny sure put some good words on you and your business.
I started doing business with your Dad 17 years ago. It is
still good to see him at the flyins. He had a lot of faith
in the cross country flights I was doing back in the early
days of UL'ing as we know it today.
Take care,

pasting replies to cut down on some of the length of the
posts. Immediately got dumped on by several of the mad
dogs, and condemned forever.
No Ron, I do not think nor do I want to be the List Boss or
the boss of anything anywhere anytime. I spent 24 years in
the Army, I have been retired 24 years next month, and I had
all the bossing and being bossed I will ever want. You
spent a few years in the Army. You know how it was.
> and you may for some, but try toning it down
> for the rest.
Again, if my personality and directness bothers you, I will
do my best to change it just for your benefit. I realize I
probably irritate you when I do not agree with everything
you post on the List. I doubt I ever will agree with
everything you post or anyone else on the List. I believe
that is my privilege as a List member. That is the
privilege of all List members. When you come here you take
off your rank, position, financial status, and everything
else, to become a Kolb Aircraft Builder and Flyer. We are
all the same, no matter how long or how short a time we have
been here. Whether we can fly, have flown a Kolb or any
other airplane or not. Every body is samo samo.
We should all come here for the same purpose; to build and
fly Kolb airplanes.
I do believe we should be self policing or the List will
literally turn to feces.
My own personal opinions for what it is worth; probably not
much,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Take care,

Ah, Captain Ron ( I use that term loosely ) you are back with your attitude,
just last year you accused me of personal attacks... But look you are in the
spot light now. Seems as if you will make yourself that way on the list,
but when folks come by where you are suppose to live you are never around..
Build and fly yourself a few airplanes and talk about who knows what about
flying homebuilt...
the reference to me would be UDT 11 1966....

Your opinions, as those of others, are just opinions and (in my opinion)
you only present them as such. Of course you and most Kolb posters include
facts and experience as background for their opinions. I'm sure most
readers prefer directness and facts and can feel comfortable to expand upon
or disagree with what they read.

I remembered the first time I heard about putting a corvair on a new home
built ( Dragonfly) I thought the guy was nuts. Then I did the research. The
engines are very dependable and smooth running. New technology on seals has
eliminated the oil leakage. Some of these engines are mounted with out
shock mounts to aircraft frames because they run so smooth. Saw one at Osh
last summer and met Wmm Winn the Corvair Guru. Sweet looking engine
package. 110 hp at 230 pounds wet.

Guys, bros, pilots, builders, I took the liberty of deleting the whole string
in this reply.
I aint feeling the love here tonight.
Come on fellows, speaking as one who has felt roughed up and done a little
roughing myself, I would like to say that it is too easy to be offended here
in a typed format. Most of us don't know each other so it is sooooo easy for
us to take things wrong and be put off by words that were not intended to
hurt. Than when we react in reply, things really get dicey.
Richard "all of em", Ron, John, and anyone else I may have left out, lets
all have a big group hug and get past this messy stuff, we all need each
other to get along to make this list work to its fullest.
This is all about building and flying safe aircraft, and the info exchange
here must not be compromised by infighting that only causes lower group
participation.
Everyone who feels a little put out tonight, consider yourself hugged and
prayed for.
Also, remember that the little offhand stuff that gets inserted here and
there in our messages sometimes does the most damage.
Take Care, and keep em flying.

Nahhh, I've been on tougher lists than this, by far. I was just digging on
the imagery.
Now I'm thinking of a misty morning somewhere in North Carolina. The roar
of an Austrian four-stroke shatters the morning stillness, and in the gray
dawn the sleepy pilots wake to the thump of a pair of boots landing on the
apron in front of the hangar. Rushing to see who is flying at this hour
they barely see the lone Twinstar skipping over the trees. On the apron
before them are the boots of their comrade, fallen only the day before.
"Those are Wolfgang's!" cried one of the pilots, "I recognize them."
Retrieving them from the cold tarmac, they find a note attached to the
bloodstained boots.
"Meet us over Reims at 10AM, if you can get those foul two-strokes to
start", read the note.
"A challenge!"
"We'll show those overweight upscale fourbangers!"
"Where's the plug wrench?"
The shouts of the pilots roused the sleepy mechanics, whose late-night
efforts to replace crankshafts and pistons had ended only a few short hours
before. Exhorted by the angry pilots, the mechanics began to mix petrol and
oil in preparation for fueling the nimble fighters on the flight line. In
the excitement, no one noticed the quiet approach of the slender bearded
figure who stopped to watch the apparent chaos, and shook his head.
"Hey Padre, did you see? They dropped Larry's boots! And challenged us to
a fight! We'll show them!"
The Padre smiled at the confident boasts of the young fighters. "Only if
you watch your EGT's", he replied ruefully.

Thanks to every one for their info. I did find some phosphoroc acid. Home
depot sells it in a pump spray, like Pledge or Windex.
One more question: several people mentioned after cleaning to "paint
directly over the metal." I also found some Zinc Chromate primer in a
spray can at a Marine supply shop. That's about as good a primer as you can
get, but will it take 1200 F?
FYI, I am aware of the hazards and precautions required when using zinc
chromate spray. <g>

List,
I have been mostly amused at this recent "unpleasantness". I never felt
that Richard had done or said anything that would require an apology. In
fact I found it amusing (whether it was intended that way or not) that he
was driven to possible impoliteness over the defaming of the corvair engine.
Most of us through the influence of Ralph Nader, immediately imagine the
worst, ugly, oil soaked, smoking, engine ever invented. Never having known
one personally that didn't fit that particular description myself, I didn't
feel called on to defend its impugned honor. However apparently Richard does
know otherwise. Preachers always feel honor bound to tell the truth, so he
did. :-) Then John in what I took to be humor, stated the obvious in such a
dry succinct way that for a moment I envied him. However during the whole
exchange I never got the impression that assailed Capt Ron. Perhaps I was
remiss in my observations. If so, please forgive me for my ignorance.
