Paul/ Gang,
Uncle Craig and myself did not make our initial flight yesterday. It's great to
make a goal date and a bummer not to make the goal date. The plane is still
having some custom work done on it. However, yesterday evening we met at the
hanger (garage) where the plane is kept and serious consideration went thru our
minds to tie a rope to the Xtra and pull it behind my 4x4 like a tethered glider
to just get some air under the wings. Instead, we settled to fly a remote
control model of the Wright Flyer at the local grass park across the street.
Funny, I took the day off to put the finishing touches on the RC Wright Flyer,
watch the WINGS channel and news, and knock out some work on my firestar. Not
much on the news, WINGS did not have anything on about Kitty Hawk until the evening,
with an hour special. I was out flying the RC Flyer during the afternoon
and not many noticed.
Still what an event and what great inventors and scientist!

That guy is up in Woody's area. Not a lot of details on performance with
that engine. Most reports I've read has the Suzuki/Geo engine as being
underpowered. Maybe this guy has solved that problem. Kirk

I have some video bur no stills yet. I'll be glad to get some and post.
Yes, I don't like trailering backward. That's the way the trailer was set
up. I'm in the process of rebuilding the trailer so I can trailer the plane
foreword. I have to go slow while moving it backwards. The wind plays
havoc with the tail surfaces. I have to go about 8 miles to the field I
fly out of.

i had a real good flight yesterday..... the brigham airport was just about as
busy as sun n fun on the opening day.... while all the aircraft was landing
i was trying to get out... had to keep put till the taxi way was clear of incomng
traffic to squeese out... i watched the flight of the flyer from the traffic
patern then exited and went for a ride along the mountain ridges at 7500
ft. what a blast. his first flight ended up at 17 seconds as it floated a bit
when he wanted to come down... the second was 50 seconds as he ran out of runway
and had to set down early the third was some figure 8's at 50 ft agl.

prosperous 2004.
I celebrated the Wright's first 100 years of aviation
yesterday by flying Miss P'fer, my MK III, from my grass
airstrip in the cow pasture to the local airport, 08A, and
back. Although it was cold and windy, the sky was perfectly
clear and blue. The air was crisp and clean. Miss P'fer
and I were both happy to get out of the hanger and into the air.
The Wright Brothers, what an accomplishment!

in inventing powered flight, check out "Dawn Over Kitty Hawk" by Walter J. Boyne.
A really great read full of the intriguing history of their adventures and
their competitors efforts as well.

When the fuel and oil mixture spit back through the carburetor, the engine is running
well below cruise speed (taxiing etc.), and so the fuel will volatilize
but the oil will not. The oil will collect in the bottom of the bib. In my
case, I have a long taxi back to the hangar and another long taxi out to the runway,
so quite a bit of oil will accumulate in the bib. If the bib is not sealed
the accumulated oil will slowly leak through the crack and drop onto the
air filter and finally it will drop onto the wing of the FireFly. If a drop comes
from the air filter while the engine is running, it may end up on one of
the tail feathers.
But to counter the previous statement, I was taking some measurements and I had
to remove the air filter from the carburetor. I was not careful and I put pressure
on one side of the bib and the JB Weld popped loose from the carburetor
on one side of the bib. I thought I should pop the whole thing out, clean the
mating surfaces and re-seal with JB Weld. After looking at it again I noticed
the JB Weld had not come loose from the bib, so I just left it as it was.
The bib spring force must keep the gap small enough and the viscosity of the oil
is high enough so that no oil has leaked on the wing. This indicates that
if one had a precision bib made and the carburetor inlet turned to receive it,
one would not have to use sealant. I have a poor man's machine shop, that consists
of a drill press and drills, some files, a vice, tin snips etc, a wire feed
welder and JB Weld. For the amount you get, JB Weld may seem expensive, but
it can greatly reduce costs when it prevents a mach
ine shop time purchase.
But when a warm day comes along, I will be replacing the original bib with the
latest design.

Well ya dang'ed ole bama reb,,.I'm sure jealous!..I wanted to celebrate the
anniversery the same way...But all I could do was drive over to the
airpark..watch the horizontal blowin snow from inside the hangar...and
shivver...(It never has let up..still going on today) so I gave the Flagfly
a rub and a pat..and then drove back home wishing for better weather!.

Thom and others,
Two other must reads about the Wrights are "Wind and Sand", and "The Bishops
Boys", both are superlative, Wind and Sand is full of photos, notes, and
letters from the brothers and makes a great coffee table book. The Bishops
boys is an exhaustive biography that covers the Wright family in surprising
depth.
Those boys were second to no one born of man in ingenuity.

Don and John,
You both have me beat, I have not seen my bird since 11-22. Right now there
is to much snow on the ground to open the bi-fold hanger doors.
Colder than a witches upper torso here in PA, and no hope of comitting
aviation in sight.
Due to the snow, I have not even been able to get into my normal winter
routine of expanding my tiny airstrip.

I also was fortunate enough to get a log book entry on December 17, 2003. My
boss was nice enough to let me have the afternoon off for the specific
purpose of going to fly (new boss is nicer than the old one.) Everything just
fell
into place. It was the first enjoyable flyable day in over three weeks. I
enjoyed a nice liesurely flight around the Rogue Valley for 1.1 hours. Thanks
Wilbur and Orville....
I can't imagine making my first flight into a 21mph wind. New plane, new
pilot. Those guys had some guts.
