Hey Guys,
Well, I'll ask again.....
Firestar II - it calls for the aileron/wing "gap seal"
to run down the entire length of the tube.....
Is that what you guys have done OR do you just run it the length of the aileron
?
Unlike some , I've built my plane Without having to be "Spoon Fed"....
But it would be nice to get alittle feedback now&then.

Mike,
I ran my aileron gap seal the full length of the wing and I'm sure John
Hauck ran his the full length also since he's the one who showed me how to
do mine.

Mike, I would run it full length if I was you, judging by the improvement
the the the tapes made in my Mk-3s performance, sealing the gaps really cuts
down on drag.

Thanks Guys,
I was hoping some of you were running the gap seal only the length
of the aileron because I've kept my tube polished aluminum... Oh well, First
priority is performance...I'll see what I can salvage.
Thanks for the replies,

Scott/All:
Only time I get to watch the Red Green Show is when I go up
north, but I take copious notes on all tips to make life
more fun and less hassle. I especially enjoy duct tape tips
and tricks.
Have you tried golf shoes in conjunction with "dem holes in
da floor for da feets"? May be an overkill in stopping
power in more ways than one.

I didn't answer before because I don't have a Firestar II, but I think that
the more stuff you can close up, seal off, and otherwise prevent
miscellaneous airflow from spilling through, and swirling around, the
better. (Never mind the vortex generators on my MKIII. So far, they have
been like feeding crackers to a dead man - it might look odd, but it hasn't
hurt any thing...)
For instance, my next step is to gap seal the elevator/stabilizer to each
other, and then close off the gap between the stab and the fuselage (Gotta
be major drag at that junction)
Several years ago at Oshkosh, I had the chance to go over a Monocoupe real
closely. That little monster was drag reduction taken to the Nth degree.
Obviously, none of us Kolbers will ever make any of our birds anything like
a Monocoupe. But the same principles apply, and the more they are
implemented, (as appropriate) the more efficiently we will fly.
Merry Christmas

Paul/All:
When you get to the point of changing your signature block
from "building" to "flying", make a flight from Mississippi
up to the UP of Michigan, land at Scott Trask's crooked
airstrip just north of Iron Mountain, Michigan, eat a
"pastie" or two and some freezer burned deer burgers (I'll
let Scott explain the procedure for feeding his guests deer
burgers), then you will no longer be lost, but on your way
to becoming a Yooper wannabie.

Speaking of Yoopers, I just finished reading a new novel which is set in the UP.
It was written (5th book I think) by a friend of mine who is also a pilot. I
recommend it for those who like good novels and those who want to learn a bit
about the U.P.
The book is "Season's Revenge" by Henry Kisor and is murder mystery committed by
a bear! He also wrote "Flight of the Gin Fizz" which is not a novel but a story
about his retracing the flight of Cal Rodgers from New York to Los Angeles
in 1911 in a Wright Model B flying machine. I'm not pluggin' his books for him,
get them from the library like I did. Good reads.

Okay, I'll bite. What's aileron gap seals got to do with bananas? This can't be
a Yooperism 'cuz they don't grow bananas that far north.

I dont know if you have run across these guys yet Jack, but there engines
are begining to get very interesting. They are Kohlers V-twins, and they
claim to have sold many. But....if you have as much snow down there in

for awhile!

I was doing a little browsing... I wonder if the Skidoo 1L. V-twin
has any potential or just a boat anchor? Yamaha also has a 998 cc
4stroke and Polaris something they call the liberty marine engine.
The interesting point is that some of these snowmobiles or water
craft sell
in the $9000 range. If the engine was really a winner you could
pluck it out and sell the remains. -BB do not archive

Don,
A 25 hp Kohler has been flying for some time (about a year) on a French design
that is based on the Spratt Control Wing. It is very interesting aircraft that
meets ultra light vehicle regulations.
It can be seen at:
http://spratt.103.free.fr/spratt103_english/welcome.htm
Weather has not been too bad here. I am making new heavier brake bands.
