I figured if anyone was crazy enough to fly with me as cold as it was yesterday, they would make arrangements to keep themselves warm. :-) Seriously, I don't have anyone that flies with me on a regular or irregular basis. I think the beauty of the Chilli Vest is the simplicity of the system, without hanging additional hardware on the aircraft, which equals weight, or inviting another inflight hazzard by routing hot water into the cockpit. For that matter, I don't like primers that route fuel into the cockpit either. To each his own, john h

--> Kolb-List message posted by: Dave Rains <rr@htg.net> Been watching the thread on heaters. I have a water/coolant heater in my &%*#@ and it works fairly good. The real trick is having a reasonably well sealed cockpit. I originally put in a valve so I could run all coolant through the heat core, but later found a simple partial bypass was sufficient. What I have been doing on cold mornings (25dg) is placing a rag in the radiator intake to reduce airflow. I have a blue head 582 that does a good job of maintaining temperature. Don't know about running an earlier one without a thermostat, don't think it would be a good idea. The nice thing about this set up is I can wear light clothing in cold weather. The 582 make enough electrical power for the heater, transponder, and radios with no problem. do not archive Dave Rains C-175B RANS S-12

I will be covering the wings, installing electrical and motor. I also got a 24ft hallmark trailer with it. I did not get a motor with it as my funds would not allow it at this time. He has a new in the crate 912 but is has been sitting in his living room as an end table since 97. Would this motor be ok or need an over haul? It has never been turned over. I may find the cash to buy it. What would it be worth? I also got all the dope, fabric and paint needed to finish it. It to have been sitting, mostly un opened. What are the chances the unopened stuff would be ok to use? Where can I post photos? Giovanni Day <>< Do not archive

I would buy it in a heart beat. No expert on Rotax but it should be just fine. I bought a used 912 with 50 hrs and paid $6800.00 It came with a oil cooler and exhaust. I sold the exhaust for $450.00 so counting the rest of the goodies I have about $6100.00 in it. Not bad considering a new one is $11.500.00...... --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Don Gherardini" <donghe@one-eleven.net> Giovanni, Depending on what kind of dope/paint you have, you might have difficulty if it is 97 vintage stuff also. The pigments have no doubt setteled out, and become sludge in the bottom of the can. I know for instance that at Wicks aircraft supply, they go thru all their Poly-Tone stock and use a shaker on each can once a month. I would call the distributor of the brand and ask their advice. I believe I also would take it all to a paint store and have them use a mechanical shaker on each can, then open and try a test on a small frame covered with scraps of dacron or something. AS far as that engine...it is really hard to say. Humidity conditions are different everywhere and in everones home...If he had airconditioning it would be a better chance all is ok. If no one spilled Coca-cola on the "end-table" that leaked down onto the engine...if the engine was wrapped in plastic...6 or 7 years is a long time. If he had children like mine....an anvil might have a hard time surviving in the living room as an end table for 7 years! Good luck, and welcome to the wonderful world of Kolb ownership! --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Larry Bourne" <biglar@gogittum.com> Congratulations, and Good Luck. About all you can really do is "look and see." On the engine, possibly Tim Olenik can make some suggestions ?? From my own experience, I bought my kit in Nov. '96, and started to cover the tail in about '00 or '01. (??) Several of the Poly-Fiber cans had lost some of the solvent - even tho' never opened - and the products inside were thickened, and 2 were like rubber. With the Poly-Brush and Poly-Tak, in the ones that weren't TOO far gone, I added MEK and did some test pieces. Worked fine on some of it, not on others, so you'll hafta try it and see. (yes, you skeptics - I did cover most of Vamoose' tail myself......! ! !) Possibly Jim & Dondi could comment on this ?? MEK hatin' Lar. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "CRAIG M NELSON" <vitalfx0@msn.com> Fellow kolbers this doesn't directly related to my airplane but I think it's worth a reed uncle craig MKIIIex 912uls warp Arizona www.milows.com The Good News That Isn't In Print The following is an email message sent to all First Marine Air Wing and Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 from LtCol Scot S. Seitz, Commanding Officer, on Monday, December 1, 2003. It's worth reading and sharing. Marines and Sailors, As we approach the end of the year, I think it is important to share a few thoughts about what you've accomplished directly, in some cases, and indirectly in many others. I am speaking about what the Bush Administration and each of you has contributed by wearing the uniform, because the fact that you wear the uniform contributes 100% to the capability of the nation to send a few onto the field to execute national policy. As you read about these achievements you are a part of, I would call your attention to two things: 1. This is good news that hasn't been fit to print or report on TV. 2. It is much easier to point out the errors a man makes when he makes the tough decisions, rarely is the positive as aggressively pursued. Since President Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1. . . . . . the first battalion of the new Iraqi Army has graduated and is on active duty. . . . over 60,000 Iraqis now provide security to their fellow citizens. . . . nearly all of Iraq's 400 courts are functioning. . . . the Iraqi judiciary is fully independent. . . . on Monday, October 6, power generation hit 4,518 megawatts-exceeding the prewar average. . . . all 22 universities and 43 technical institutes and colleges are open, as are nearly all primary and secondary schools. . . . by October 1, Coalition forces had rehab-ed over 1,500 schools-500 more than scheduled. . . . teachers earn from 12 to 25 times their former salaries. . . . all 240 hospitals and more than 1,200 clinics are open. . . . doctors salaries are at least eight times what they were under Saddam. . . . pharmaceutical distribution has gone from essentially nothing to 700 tons in May to a current total of 12,000 tons. . . . the Coalition has! helped administer over 22 million vaccinations to Iraq's children. . . a Coalition program has cleared over 14,000 kilometers of Iraq's 27,000 kilometers of weed-choked canals which now irrigate tens of thousands of farms. This project has created jobs for more than 100,000 Iraqi men and women. . . . we have restored over three-quarters of prewar telephone services and over two-thirds of the potable water production. . . there are 4,900 full-service telephone connections. We expect 50,000 by year-end. the wheels of commerce are turning. From bicycles to satellite dishes to cars and trucks, businesses are coming to life in all major cities and towns. . . . 95 percent of all prewar bank customers have service and first-time customers are opening accounts daily. . . . Iraqi banks are making loans to finance businesses. . . . the central bank is fully independent. . . . Iraq has one of the world's most growth-oriented investment and banking laws. . . . Iraq has a single, unified currency for the first time in 15 years. . . . satellite TV dishes are legal. . . . foreign journalists aren't on 10-day visas paying mandatory and extortionate fees to the Ministry of Information for "minders" and other government spies. . . . there is no Ministry of Information. . . . there are more than 170 newspapers. . . . you can buy satellite dishes on what seems like every street corner. . . . foreign journalists (and everyone else) are free to come and go. . . a nation that had not one single element-legislative, judicial or executive-of a representative government, now does. . . . in Baghdad alone, residents have selected 88 advisory councils. Baghdad's first democratic transfer of power in 35 years happened when the city council elected its new chairman. . today in Iraq, chambers of commerce, business, school and professional organizations are electing their leaders all over the country. . . . 25 ministers, selected by the most representative governing body in Iraq's history, run the day-to-day business of government. the Iraqi government regularly participates in international events. Since July, the Iraqi government has been represented in over two dozen international meetings, including those of the UN General Assembly, the Arab League, the World Bank and IMF and, today, the Islamic Conference Summit. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today announced that it is reopening over 30 Iraqi embassies around the world. . . . Shia religious festivals that were all but banned, aren't. . . for the first time in 35 years, in Karbala thousands of Shiites celebrate the pilgrimage of the 12th Imam. . . . the Coalition has completed over 13,000 reconstruction projects, large and small, as part of a strategic plan for the reconstruction of Iraq. . . . Uday and Qusay are dead-and no longer feeding innocent Iraqis to the zoo lions, raping the young daughters of local leaders to force cooperation, torturing Iraq's soccer players for losing games, or murdering critics. . . . children aren't imprisoned or murdered when their parents disagree with the government. . . . political opponents aren't imprisoned, tortured, executed, maimed, or are forced to watch their families die for disagreeing with Saddam. . . . millions of longsuffering Iraqis no longer live in perpetual terror. . . . Saudis will hold municipal elections. . . . Qatar is reforming education to give more choices to parents. . . . Jordan is accelerating market economic reforms. . . . the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded for the first time to an Iranian-a Muslim woman who speaks out with courage for human rights, for democracy and for peace. . . . Saddam is gone. . . . Iraq is free. . . . President Bush has not faltered or failed. . . . Yet, little or none of this information has been published by the Press corps that prides itself on bringing you all the news that's important. Iraq under US-led control has come further in six months than Germany did in seven years or Japan did in nine years following WWII. Military deaths from fanatic Nazi's and Japanese numbered in the thousands and continued for over three years after WWII victory was declared. It took the US over four months to clear away the twin tower debris, let alone attempt to build something else in its place. Now, take into account that almost every Democrat leader in the House and Senate has fought President Bush on every aspect of his handling of this country's war and the post-war reconstruction, and that they continue to claim on a daily basis on national TV that this conflict has been a failure. Taking everything into consideration, event the unfortunate loss of our brothers and sisters in this conflict, do you think anyone else in the world could have accomplished as much as the United States and the Bush administration in so short a period of time? These are things worth writing about. Get the word out. Write to someone you think may be able to influence our Congress or the press to tell the story. Above all, be proud that you are a part of this historical precedent. God bless you all. Have a great Holiday. Semper Fidelis, LtCol Scot S Seitz

--> Kolb-List message posted by: SR3SA2L1@aol.com Yes, thats wonderful. I am truly happy for those people over there and really do wish them the best as time goes on. However, before you start campaigning for the next election, perhaps you should compare what you have said to what has happened in the good old U.S. (who is paying for all of this) on each of the issues you commented on - 100,000 jobs lost per month for three years straight so far, the patriot act, schools closing every day, schools that are open are understaffed and so bad they should be condemned, students that are functionally illiterate at graduation, health care that is unavailable to large percentages of our population and ranked among the lowest overall quality in the industrialized world (I am a doctor, these are not my personal surveys or numbers), our water supplies are contaminated to the point you can't safely drink from most ground water sources or eat the fish that come out of them or swim on the coasts and contaminant levels that don't even meet our own minimum standards anymore, open canals that we can't afford to cement in (ask Oregon about this one), our industrial base first and now our high tech sector is leaving the country and going under at record rates (India has now surpassed Silicon Valley) which means "the wheels of commerce are turning all right, from satellite dishes, cars and trucks to bicycles" here in the U.S., we have the largest number of people in prison and in the penal system of any industrialized nation in the world and spend more on prisons than education, our information is now filtered through a very small handful of people and media companies and has turned the "news" and thoughtful political discussion into nothing more than paid for sound bites and trade offs of political correctness, a military budget that takes up approx. half of our economic resources at a time when we should be enjoying the "peace dividend" instead of declaring wars unending until all boogie men and terrorist and countries that support them and every evildoer in the world has been eliminated from every spot on the planet, etc. etc. etc. Before you start calling me names, I am a Nam vet. and have earned the right to comment and point out the statistics as they exist. Don't give me the "love it or leave it" line - that is not what made this country great. I am not anti government or anti military and I am proud of what our soldiers have accomplished and their potential. I just think it is to bad we can't do here what we are doing there. Maybe we should consider bringing the troops home and having them do their good deeds here for a while so we can rebuild our infrastructure enough to keep us strong enough to help the rest of the world before it is to late. If we go the way others have gone who did not take care of the home front first, we may have to get Iraq to help us before to much longer. Sorry for pointing out the obvious. Just couldn't let that go even though I wanted to. Steve Do not archive

Avery Marks-A-Lot Retractable Fine Tip Marker. No top to lose. I got some at Office Depot and I also saw some at Walmart. I was always misplacing tops before and letting mine dry out. Subject: New owner of a MK III
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Cooley" <johnc@datasync.com> Hi Giovanni and Gang, My Firestar II is a 1994 model that I purchased as a kit in late 1999 from a guy in Pennsylvania. It was finished in early 2001. The covering material was included with the kit along with the poly-brush, reducer and poly-tak. I didn't get any poly-spray (silver uv paint) with the kit or paint. I purchased it later when needed. I talked to Jim Miller at that time and he said that the poly-brush should be ok as long as I could get it all mixed up, it had settled and compacted in the bottom. I did get it stirred up and it worked fine. The poly-tak was whiskey colored and I purchased new glue just to be on the safe side. I have since used some of the older poly-tak and believe it to be as strong as the fresh stuff. One reason the poly stuff was still good in this case was probably that it was stored in a garage in Pennsylvania. Doubt that it would have lasted that long here in the deep south. I would be sure and filter it before using it to brush on the initial filler coat or any time as it seems to have some small chunks in it no matter how much you stir and mix. Giovanni Day <>< Do not archive _

I flew with it that way for a month and the second side went to 0. ------------------------ the egt probes are thermocouples simular to those used on water heaters and furnaces.... they produce up to 30 mv of power when heated..... i have seen them last 15 - 20 years... and as little as a few months.... i would sugest that you heat it up and test with a dc milivolt meter and check the output... if it seems ok then check the wireing. to heat it up it could be removed and heated with a match, candle, or a torch on low heat.. boyd
