Caution Kolbers,
I picked up a virus from the Kolb list that destroyed my hard drive beyond repair.
The name of the virus is Trojan.
I am posting from a new machine because of this virus. I have Norton anti-virus
but it got through.
I believe there might be those who would intentionally plant such a virus. Be
Careful!
I know this isn't Kolb related but important.

It's highly unlikely you got it from the Kolb-List... all attachments are
stripped. Someone can send email to your address so that it LOOKS like
it's from the Kolb-List, but if it has an attachment, it's not from the
Kolb-List. NEVER open ANY attachment unless you are 100% sure you know who
it's from and what's in it.

Dale/All:
That is a very serious accusation.
There may be some of us on the Kolb List you don't like, but I doubt any
would stoop that low.
My computer gets attacked every day, and much more frequently the last week
or so, by virus. Sometimes it looks like they come from friends, when in
fact they do not.
Since the Kolb List will not accept attachments, I doubt very seriously you
got your virus from the List. The individual would have to send the virus
another route and you would have to open the attachment.

It was good to see you again and thanks for the kind comments. Lar, to answer
your question- we painted a little desert scene on one of the stripes on the port
wing, just like on the nose of the Mark III Xtra. At first from a distance
people think it is a bad paint run, but on closer inspection you see a Yucca
plant with saguaro cactus intermingled with some pear cactus. People like it
and ask how we do it? We reply with, "oh, that is how paint runs here in Arizona".
On a serious note, Will Uribe fesses up to us that he will be going under the knife
this Monday to have a stomach tumor removed. Folks that open thoracic surgery!
So Will will be losing a few pounds before the monument valley trip----
Will, the best of luck with you, and you are in our thoughts and prayers.

It is my opinion that the virus came in with one of the referenced web sites
included with a post. I'm not acusing anyone of anything but there has been
a considerable amount of animocity here of late. One never knows what will
happen when things get heated. I sincerely hope this is not the case but at
the time it happened I did not go to any sites except those included with a
post.
I lost everything, bookmarks, addresses, stored documents as well as many
pictures stored on my computer. I was running windows 98. what the virus
did was, every time I went online, it started opening sites and downloaded
data until my C drive was full wnd would not run anything because of no
resourses. I went into DOS and formated the C drive and attempted to reload
98 but was unsucessful.
I just hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.

Dale and others,
Sometimes people will blame a virus for a computer problem. Not every computer
problem is caused by a virus. A virus does not destroy a hard drive, just the
information on that drive. If the hard drive is good but the operating system
is dead, it can be formatted and the software replaced.
I have never had a virus in all the years I've had a computer while on the kolb
list. I do not have any virus protection on this machine and I surf everyday
on the web. Not bragging, but it's true. One reason might be due the limited bandwidth
using a dialup system. This might be an advantage for dialup users. If
it ever quits, I will format the drive and restore it.
Keep your windows startup disk handy and backups for everything just in case.

I'm no expert on viruses but, if your description is correct, the one
who destroyed all the data was Dale Sellers, not the virus per se. It
appears this virus is a local disk version of a "denial of service"
attack. Overload the resource so it can't be used. If so, the solution
would have been to boot DOS from floppy (everyone has a boot disk ready
don't they?) and delete the extraneous files until Windows will boot
from disk. Then you are in a position to hunt down the virus and clean
up the disk.
The moral of this story is when things start to go bad, stop and get
professional help. The cost is worth every penny (well, every C note).

Kolb list or any link in a Kolb list message. Web sites have permanent
addresses which can not be made anonymous. Thus any hanky panky can be
traced back to the owner/creator who is liable for damages. This is the
reason emails are the preferred infection vector.

Netscape there are a few Microsoft "features" which can be attacked from
an open email without opening any attachments. However, bet Matt
filters this out. Microsoft may have fixed this security weakness by

computer, they tend to swap floppys and CDs with games, data and
unwanted extras.

Trojans and spyware are different from viruses.
Use Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/
and
Spybot Search & Destroy from
http://security.kolla.de/news.php?lang=en
Both are free downloads. Update them often, use them often.
They deal with what most anti-virus software doesn't.

I did take my computer to a perfessional. He said the harddrive was shot
and could not be reloaded. I am the only one using my computer, no kids.

Wouldn't know, have never been to a whorehouse (honest). My wife has
had a guided tour or two, maybe I should ask her.
The issue has nothing to do with groups. Anyone getting email on the
internet is vulnerable to attack. So far, I've had no problems by using
Netscape and *never* opening an email attachment I wasn't expecting
already from someone I trusted technically and *never* loading a
non-commercial floppy or CD in my computer.
Now when it comes to file backups, I'm rather ambivalent. I've made a
very large amount of money from customers who failed to back up their
files as often as I told them to. Kind of hate to lose the income.

I never back up either but then I have our drives in a mirrored and striped
raid set up. I find that Nortons internet protection will stop and yell
murder the moment that an infected email tries to come in from my ISP. Yes
that means that is has stopped on incoming mail from this group. It
automatically deletes the virus after I ackndowledge its cackle of "Look,
look, what I did". Say that several times fast and it sounds like an old
hen.
Most of the SPAM I get is through the identity I use for groups. I get very
little on my private identities as they are not made public.

difference between them and my Kolbra is aerodynamics, I decided to try a

I can tell, you are getting bored.
Probably pickup a couple hundred miles per hour, but gonna be dragging those
horizontal stabalizer tips off on rough fields.
I am waiting on some parts before I get into a serious update of several
things on ole Miss P'fer. Not looking forward to it, but will not be so bad
after I get into it. Got some rivets in the tail boom "H" brace loosening
up after nearly 2,000 hours that need to be replaced, rewire instrument
panel and intercom. A few other odds and ends like new engine Lord mounts
and bolts, radiator, tach, volt meter, spark plug wire terminals, and the
list goes on. Oh yea, got to pull my gear legs. Some of those serious
landings have changed the shape of both legs, the left more than the right.
I always seem to favor that leg when I do hard landings. :-)
Just got off the phone with my retired Army Aviator buddy in North Pole,
Alaska. JD Smith said it was -35F at 1300
Alaska time today. Told him several of us Kolbers were headed to Alaska in
July. Said he would leave the porch light on for us. Super guy. Met him
on the internet before I did my 2001 flight to Alaska. He took me in when I
got there and I was part of the family for four days waiting on weather to
fly to the North Slope. When I cam back down through North Pole I spent a
couple more days resting up and getting ready to head for the Lower 48.

I guess the cat is out of the bag. I want to thank everyone who sent me an

It's no big thing I'm only going to loose half my stomach to get at the

Today, I finally brought Vamoose home after 4 months of being jerked around, so now might even get something accomplished. The new landing gear looks great, but the A&P really ripped me off on the price..............double what was expected. You can see it at: http://www.flyingpics.homestead.com/gear1.html . Now, just gotta paint it. I had planned on powder coating, but Tom Kuffel raised the question of flexing. Before checking on that, I called the heat treating shop, and they told me NOT to powder coat the legs. Anything over 300 deg. F., will start to degrade the R48 hardness rating (they guarantee R46-48)...............and THAT is a real romper room no-no. So, I guess it'll be a spray can chance. Another thing - several people have expressed an interest in going on the next whale watching trip to Guerrero Negro, Baja California, Mexico with me. I've arranged for time off, starting on Feb. 9, and I plan on a 6 day trip. 2 days each way, 1 day (2 trips) on the boats, and 1 day up in the mountains. From Palm Springs, it's about 650 miles each way - 500 miles below the border at Tecate. The 1st day going south will be pretty intense; the 2nd, more leisurely. P.S. I've given some thought to flying down there in a year or so, but it's
a tough call. People who've done it say it's a terrific experience.............but
then again, you hear some pretty bad stories too. I dunno. I do know
it's a fantastic drive. The scenery down the spine of the Baja, from San Quintin
