Doug, Great story, it brought back memeries of flying my Dactyl to a Pig roast in Saxonburg PA in 1981 or 82 along with a friend in a Kawasaki 440 powered Wizard .(GASP) The Wizard flew so slow that I also had to fly circles around him as the Dac wouldn't hold altitude at his slow speed. We had a great time that day, what a wonderful experience for myself being all of 15 or 16 years old at the time. The flyin was in June and lasted eight days. That's a lot of days and a lot of flying. I got there about three days early, to make sure I did not miss anything. I really did not know how long it was going to take me to fly there, so I gave myself plenty of time to get there and not be late. I was amazed at how fast the little Firestar made the flight. Two days to Homer's and another day to the Flight Farm. I continually had to pinch myself during this flight to see if I was awake and not dreaming. I might add, I have never made any ultralight cross country flight with any kind of ground support. I started out with the Ultrastar, doing cross country flights and no ground support. It has always been my way of flying. If I can not do it by myself, then I'll stay at home. Please don't take that the wrong way. I have no problem with folks trailering their airplanes to airshows, or having Mom tag along in a $125,000.00 BAMH (big ass motor home). If you can do it, fine! I'm a little different. I do it my way. :-) However, I have been learning to fly with others, and look forward to the flying our group is going to be doing this year. In 1987 and 1988, I could get all my stuff in the airplane except my sleeping bag. When I was building the Firestar, Brother Jim welded me four tabs under the bottom and rear of the gear legs to sling load stuff that would not fit inside. I found a little cargo net made of bungy cord to secure the sleeping bag. I flew from Gantt IAP, AL, to Griffin, GA, non-stop. From Griffin to NE to I85, then up I85 to Gafney, SC, just south of the NC state line. Spied a Burger King next to the Interstate. A small hay field nearby. I was starving. Had not eaten since I left home. I landed in the hayfield for lunch on the 1988 and 1989 flights to the NE in the Firestar. Just before dark I decided on a nice big hayfield in the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley to spend the night. Was next to I81. Grass was knee high. A quarter of a mile or so to the SE was a resturant. I was in hog heaven: http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/airplanes/RON%20in%20VA%201988.jpg The reason I elected to land and RON in the hayfield was because the FBO at New River Valley Airport, Radford, VA, where I refueled, wanted me to pay him for the privledge to sleep on his grass with my airplane. Pissed me off. So I loaded up, took off and found the hay field. This shot was taken very early in the morning. I had to wait a short time to let the fog clear a little to take off. I also spent the night here, at 2,400 feet ASL, in 1989. No need to put up the tent. Rolled out the air mattress and sleeping bag. Had no problem going to sleep. Next day I made it to Homer Kolb's. Spent the night, and continued north to the Flight Farm, NW of Elmira, NY. Here is what I did at the Farm, fly. It was barnstorming in the 80's. I slept in my "body bag", got chow where I could, flew from dawn to dusk. All navigation for the 88 and 89 flights were pilotage and DED reckoning, sectional and mag compass. There was no GPS. It was as basic as one could get. He wanted to know what kind of plane I was flying and I told him a Kolb Kolbra . He didn't know anything about the kolbra but knew of Kolb and then he was telling me a story of a guy that went to Alaska with a 503 in a two seater and then from there all the way to the Kolb company back east and he was telling me , it grossed out with the fuel tank at 1200 lbs . He was really impressed with that plane . But never built one . This sounds a little heavy for a Mk II. What's the story on this guy. Does anybody know? Had to some time back . Was that you John H ? After about 400 hours, the thimbles were getting gouged by the wing tangs. When looking back at the tail during flight, the stabs were bouncing all over the place. I replaced them and now use a nut/wrench and they are comfortably tight but not too tight. Larry / John H / and others, It could have been Rick Trader from New Jersey. He did a flight to Alaska several years ago and had people at various locations sign their names on the tail. He then started visiting schools and telling the kids all about the trip, promoting care of mother earth. Haven't heard anything about him lately.
