He was carrying near 1000 lbs. if my memory serves me right. The gross rating on his plane was only 750 lbs. Kitplane magazine archives should say. Reading of his adventure was what made me decide on the Kolb. ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 03:57:24 AM PST US From: "Denny Rowe" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: 503 two seater --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Denny Rowe" Guys, It was Rick Trader, he did the trip around the time the Mk-3 was being introduced in 1989 or 90, he wanted to use the Mk-3 but it was not ready in time for his trip so he modified the poop out of his Mk-2. He used a 582 for the trip and also had a high quality movie camera under the belly to record the whole trip. Said he had zero airplane problems the entire trip. The trip was a circumnavigation of the lower 48 with a leg up to Alaska, I don't think he went all the way to the arctic circle but I may be wrong. Rick was from New Jersey I beleive and used to host a show for EAA TV. The old Kolb factory video I have features Rick and tells a little about his trip. Those of us in the NE should think about a regional MV-like excursion eventually since the far west is a mite more than most want to go. There don't seem to be many listers from the new england states. How can you get more horses out of it? What is the engine rated for now? HP/Torque/Red Line? Are the silencers straight through? I bet the BMW would not be that noisy with straight pipes cut the proper length. John Williamson's Jabiru was running straight exhaust without being overly annoying. I liked the way it sounded. Realistically, the 582 burns 5 to 5.5 gph at 5800 to 6000 rpm. Just guessing, but the BMW will probably burn about 3 gph putting out equivalent power. I know nothing about BMW engines, other than their great reputation for reliability. I bet one could squeeze a lot more than 66 hp out of one and still keep it on the realiable side of the equation. Homer always designed the struts extra long, for some reason. The extra long tail wheel strut is prone to get into the bottom of the rudder if one experiences a hard landing on the tail wheel. It also allows the tail wheel to move around a lot in all directions. Contact Bill and Barbara Locke in Horse Heads. They probably still own the farm. When I went by there last October, the airstrips and taxiways were fresh cut. All the hangars were secured and no airplanes or activity in the area. The old farm house was occupied. I didn't see anyone around. Spent a few minutes enjoying some old memories of the place, then moved on. I think anyone could get a draw of a few Kolbs, should they decide to have a flyin, giving some of us enough time to pack our bag and gas up the Kolbs. john h DO NOT ARCHIVE ________________________________ Message 8 _____________________________________ Time: 06:36:45 AM PST US From: Richard Pike Available! These are the kinds of tales that newbie Kolb fliers (like me) need to hear to get us out and start having fun with our airplanes! I'm still barely only halfway through my 40-hour Phase-1 flight testing. Though I'm already quite comfortable with the flight and landing characteristics of my Mark-III (thanks to all who offered landing tips by the way - I haven't bent a gear leg since my first botched landing!), I have not yet flown to another airport and actually shut down my engine. Being that this is my first homebuilt aircraft, I have not yet managed to sever those psychological apron strings that keep me tied to the comfort & security of being within 25 miles of my home airport. That is why I'll be trailering my plane to Monument Valley in May, rather than flying it there. (Thanks for not smirking at me for that, John!) Keep the stories coming ... A North East Kolb excursion sounds Great!. We should start thinking about areas to consider, southern New York, Central PA (lots of Kolbs there), Dayton Ohio (where this all started), a mass flight to Homers farm (only with his blessing), a tour of south western PA(my backyard) possibly circumnavigating Pittsburgh Class B with stops at places of interest such as Carlson Aircraft company, and as John H suggested maybe the Flight Farm or Bob Griffins UL fly in, last but not least the Fathers day UL fly in at Wellsville PA. The mind reels with the possibilities! As long as I can fit it around my 21 turn work schedule and family obligations I am in, if the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise. Neither engine weigh very much more than a 503 with a C gearbox, but the power increase of 20hp is a huge leap. I know a lot of folks have installed 582s on Mk-2s which I am pretty sure have the same wing as a FS II but Homer always warned against such installations as frame cracking becomes a concern. All that said, I know from flying 503, 582 and 690L powered ships that the 690L would definitly burn the least fuel of the bunch on a FS II size ship. It really is surprisingly easy on fuel for a big 2 stroke with Bing carbs. also the cruise power settings you would use with a 690 powered FS would be extreamly low, no doubt that VNE could be exceeded in level flight with such a set up. One would need to be very careful with throttle control. 503 powered Firestars seem to haul the mail nicely, I'll look foreward to hearing performance numbers from 503 powered FS drivers. Will Uribe, how are you feeling pal? :-) Denny Rowe, 690L powerewd Mk-3, PA, PS: 16 degrees out and we are heading to DQ drive through for ice cream. ________________________________ Message 28 ____________________________________ Time: 05:45:59 PM PST US From: "Larry Bourne" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Done? --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Larry Bourne" Yuk yuk...........?? In all serious-ness, tho', a while back someone, either on or off List - can't remember - asked why I didn't just get the fool thing flying and worry about "improvements" later. Good question, and there are several answers: 1) Big Lar is a world-class procrastinator. 2) The Big One - I can do pretty much what-ever I like to it before I have it inspected. From there on, any changes would involve more - probably much more - paperwork, (which I'm not good at, at the best of times) and possibly a new 25 or 40 hour fly-off requirement. 3) Many of these changes were mandated by un-foreseen circumstances, such as buying a FireStar trailer, then trying to make a Mk III fit in it. At about 1/3 to 1/4 the price of bigger trailers I've seen, this seems like a worthy trade-off. Future builders may just benefit from my experiences, (and mistakes) too. 4) It seems to me that once something is "done," changes become something "I'll get to, one day." I know for absolute certain that I'm not the only one with THAT tendency. Big project for tomorrow is to get the landing gear painted, so today I borrowed the air compressor, bead blaster and media from work, preparing for this mighty effort. Well not exactly. My method of transport was: Take off the wings and transport them home on a rack on the utility trailer, one at a time. Glad I only live a few minutes from my airstrip. Next, I take off the tailwheel, back up the little Kubota tractor, hook the tailwheel fitting into a towbar on the tractor, and haul it home backwards on its own main gear. I have transported all my airplanes back and forth from the airpstrip like this. I have some pics somewhere of the transport set up. I'll show them when I run across them. After I got Cuz home, pulled the tailboom, stuck a short piece of 5" tubing in its place, loaded the fuselage in the utility trailer and hauled it to Brother Jim's shop in Woodville, FL. I needed more fuel and needed to get the big bulky 8 gal (advertised as 9 gal) Ken Brock seat tank out of my small cockpit. I needed more cargo space inside the fuselage so I would not have to sling load my sleeping bag or anything else outside the aircraft. I wanted to pull the instrument panel back towards me so I could see and manipulate the switches, altimeter, G Meter, etc. I needed to beef up my original 4130 gear legs and fabricate gearleg/axle sockets to fit. And, I wanted some brakes. All my fixed wing flying up to that time had been without brakes. For that matter, I had never flown anything with brakes before, except a CH54 Skycrane, and that was for 1.5 hours. All the other helicopters had skids. Jim added some tubes here and there to beef up the fuselage. He also had some major repairs to do to fix damage caused by landing 10 feet above the ground on Grand Island, NY, five minutes after flying over Niagra Falls, due to a bad spark plug. Not a fouled plug, but an NKG BR8EV fine wire plug that came apart. The electrode seperated, grounding out the plug. Rotax 447s fly one way on one cylinder, down. We did not do anything to the wings or tail section. After Cuz'n P'fer and I got home, his fuselage was stripped, bare bones, sand blasted, epoxy primed and painted. This picture shows the 18 gal, useable, fuel tank. The fuel tank was tested several times for leaks. All observed leaks were repaired, usually tiny pin holes from the TIG welder, invisible to the naked eye. I did not feel the need to slosh this tank. Wish I had, but I don't know that they had avgas/autofuel slosh back then. Not long after I started flying it developed a very slight leak, or ooze. Not even a drip. However, where the leak was located was in a position I could not get to easily. I tried a lot of different remedies that were available in 1989, but never did get the ooze to stop oozing. The tank was installed without cutting any tubes. This system opened up the bottom section for cargo. http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/Firestar%20Upgrade%201988-89/FS%20Upgrade%2088-89-1.jpg This shot shows the 4130 steel windshield bow and attachments for the instrument panel. Also shows the cargo door in the lower rear bulkhead. I fabricated a hinged door to fit the unusual opening. I could now get all my stuff inside. http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/Firestar%20Upgrade%201988-89/FS%20Upgrade%2088-89-2.jpg We discovered upon removal of the fuselage fabric, from around the tail tube, gasoline, oil, and dirt, were rapidly chaffing and wearing away at the aluminum boom tube. Jim designed the fabric brace to keep the fabric off the tailboom surface. Also notice the neat fabric braces down the bottom center of the fuselage. These are also Jim's ideas that I fought for a while, then gave in and let him weld them up. Glad I did now. They are carried over, as many other little changes, to my MK III. http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/Firestar%20Upgrade%201988-89/FS%20Upgrade%2088-89-3.jpg A different angle of the bottom of the fuselage. http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/Firestar%20Upgrade%201988-89/FS%20Ugrade%2088-89-4.jpg Another fabric change made by Jim, that I also balked at initially, was the curved fabric braces top and bottom in front of the rear bulkhead. They really make the airplane, along with the bottom fabric braces look sleek and classic. I now have my Hegar wheels and hydraulic brakes. Look much better than the old wheel barrow wheels of days gone by. Five minutes taxiing and flying with the new brakes and I was hooked. Would never go back to flying wheeled aircraft without brakes. http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/Firestar%20Upgrade%201988-89/FS%20Upgrade%2088-89-5.jpg A different angle of the fuselage. This is a good shot of the new 4130 gear legs. They are the same length as the original steel legs, 35.5". This length was based on the maximum space in Linberg Heat Treating's oven in Orlando, Florida. They said they could handle stuff 36" long. I stayed a tad conservative and went with 35.5" just to make sure I did not have a problem with them. We increased the diamter from 1.0" to 1.125" and wall thickness from .090 to .120. Rockwell numbers were increased from 42RC (I got the numbers from the boss at MaxAir, same number MaxAir was using on their steel legs) to 48RC. The gear legs worked out perfectly. We had come up with some good numbers on our updated gear legs. Look closely, you can see the piano hinge on the top of the cargo door, bottom of rear bulkhead. I almost missed this one. The instrument panel and instruments are installed in their new home. http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/Firestar%20Upgrade%201988-89/FS%20Upgrade%2088-89-6.jpg We were now ready to take on Oshkosh 1989. Cuz'n P'fer flew me to Homer Kolb's, near Philadelphia, then to Bert Howland's, south of Albany, NY, then through all the New England States in one day (from 0730 to 2100), to the Flight Farm, to Lake Ontario and south, down the Niagra River and over Niagra Falls, into Canada and back across the Niagra River and Grand Island, where I had crashed the year before, around Buffalo and down the south shore of Lake Erie, up the Michigan Pennisula, across the Mackinac Straits to Sault Saint Marie, Canada, across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and down south to the big flyin at Oshkosh. Got settled in and over the excitement of flying into the world's greatest airshow, then began to clean up Cuz'n P'fer so he could strut his stuff for the Oshkosh Judges. He did good! We won Oshkosh Grand Champion Ultralight 1989. What a feeling. Ole Cuz'n P'fer had won them both, Sun and Fun 1988 and Oshkosh 1989. I was a proud Daddy of this little airplane. He had flown me 3,000 miles from Alabama to Oshkosh, the long way, got a pretty good award at Oshkosh, then flew me another 1,000 miles home. What an airplane. http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/airplanes/OSH%201989.jpg http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/airplanes/OSH%201989%20Grand%20Champ%20UL.jpg There's a lot to share with you about this little Kolb Firestar (Original), as they are now called. He opened up the skies of the US and snuck into Canada; from Miami, FL, to Texas, to Muskogee, OK, Sault Saint Marie, Canada, Maine and Alabama. Pushed along by our mighty 40 hp two stroke, point ignition, Rotax and Jim Culver 60" wooden prop. We never hesitated to take off, point our nose the way we wanted to go, and fly. Sometimes it was overwhelming to lay down on my airmattress at night and think of where I had departed from that morning and where we were sleeping that night. We had a good time together. And did it all without a GPS! It had a real lean spot in the high mid range that would seize her up in a hurry if you set the throttle just a little under full throttle. He let me fly it once while I was dating my wife and I was so blown away by the incredible climb rate that I backed out of full throttle just a smidge, the dual EGTs barely had time to spike up and that sucker was a glider. Luckily Dacs are great gliders and flying them is kind of like riding a bicycle (you never forget), I got her back down from 600 ft with no further damage. After that he decided to go with the stock exhaust and carb and is still flying with 2SI power with no more problems. A real nice simple UL. Kolbers, I think Kirk expressed it very well.* And Rick, as John pointed out, was not a builder ... nor a mechanic. But he did have this dream to fly an Ultralight to Alaska and he did it despite the fact that he did not have the large arsenal of skills that John has, for instance. He purchased the open TwinStar and had Glen Rinck in Florida build the plane, add the enclosure and pod underneath the fuselage. As far as pioneering, I think he was the first with a Kolb to Alaska. I think John would have been first, but he was delayed, for some reasons, as I recall. Forgive me John if I am in error on this. Rick did the trip with a 2-stroke engine, which added to the adventure. And he did it in a less capable aircraft which was significantly overloaded! Perhaps this would be his distinctive mark as a "pioneer": doing the trip at gross weights which exceeded 1000 lb. at times in the TS which was only rated at 725 lb. gross weight. And as Mike pointed out this gave him the confidence, and the "big reasons why he chose Kolb......figuring that if Kolbs could do that, they're TOUGH!!" Many Kolb builders and flyers have also done pioneering work - contributions both large and small, and as a result collectively have enriched the Kolb line of aircraft above and beyond what it otherwise would have been. With appreciation, Dennis *Certainly John. Richard Pike's site is a testament (no pun intended) to this time-honored practice. I put a new instrument panel on mine before the 40 hours were flown off, it's been rewired twice now, and sports a 17 gallon fiberglass tank that wasn't there to begin with. It never ends. The very best thing is to get it flying, then you'll really have an incentive to work fast when you need to. I piddled on mine the last year before it was certified, working on this or that. Now I get three times as much done in the time I work on it, out at the field after flying in the morning. It goes right along when you are itching to fly. Another thing I discovered is that it's a lot of fun have an airplane at a friendly airfield to fly and work on. You meet a lot of great people who love to fly and work on their planes. I've made some new friends out at Sundance Farms. We've all been there, Lar. Don't bog down now. Do it right, but do it right now, and you won't regret it a minute. It will be so sweeeeet, climbing out in that little plane for the very first time. You'll be amazed how fine that lexan looks at about 500 feet. Go for it, buddy. We're rootin' for ya.
