I looked at the Ebay listing for the BMW engine, currently at $1250. Here
are a few observations:

tightening and frequent replacement. My opinion. It does have a very high

Bottom line: I spent $1100 for a low time (12000 miles) 1991 R100, all
stock, hadn't been messed with. About a $1000 seems to be the norm for a
crashed bike, which gets you everything you need, and then since it is a
titled vehicle you get some traceability. I would judge this Ebay to be
worth less due to its unknown age and wear. It could have been pieced
together from parts. The stuff that is missing could easily exceed the
cost of the engine. Mine did not include a reduction drive, but the "C"
gearbox is the slick way to go anyway. Thrustline with "C" box is about an
inch different than the 582 was (depending on your mount plate and oil pan
combinations, could be an inch lower, could be an inch higher) .
My bid is $700. If you are serious about the engine, perhaps a little
research can clear up some of these issues, and maybe add a bit of value.
I agree with Don though, that ugly blue color has to go.

It would appear that this engine has been modified to be in the tractor (not pusher)
position. On a regular BMW engine the exhaust is pointing forward and the
transmission is pointing and carbs are at the rear. There is a conversion
that can be done to put the cylinders on the opposite sides and then a new cam
is installed, it looks like this engine has had this done. I believe the exhaust
should be on the forward side for cooling reasons. This keeps the hot side
of the cylinders into the wind and the cold side down wind.

I asked the owner if it was a new engine modded to aircraft use or a used
bike engine. He said it was a used bike engine with new internals ( what
ever that means). I don't know enough yet about BMW conversions yet to make
a bid so if anyone wants it I'm out of the race.

Can you guys recommend conversion sites or where to by a converted engine?
Yes I know I can goggle it but if you are already working with a dealer or a
conversion site your insights about problems you have faced would be better
than cold calling.

Hi guys,
I just talked to someone who said he had been e-mailing me several times
with no response. It turns out he was using the wrong e-mail address. I
use a specific e-mail address just for message groups. In addition to the
hundred or so e-mails per day I get from those groups, I get maybe three
times that on that same address that is nothing but junk. So if the subject
line does not have the pre-fix from one of the message groups I supscribe
to, it automaticly gets the delete key and will often get the delete key
even with the prefix if the subject does not get my attention. This e-mail
address that I use for message groups is not advertised anywhere.
To e-mail us directly, use the e-mail address that we advertise on our
website, in magazines and everytwhere: olenik@buyitsellitfixit.com Notice,
I've had to add the message below to my signature as well.
So I'm sorry if anyone has tried to contact me and got no response.... you
were just using the wrong e-mail address. It makes me wonder how many

Does anyone know the pros and cons on the subject? I believe the trike is a
powered extension of the first successful hang glider ......the Rogallo wing,
isn't it? What was wrong with the Rogallo wing....we don't want to do
aerobatics anyway, so, where are the limitations of it for just ol lazy slo flyin
around the blue. I had a pterodactyl which had that severe washout that proves
sooooo safe for that type of planform, just like the trikes do....... and I
really liked my pterodactyl, but I DON'T think it was as good economically as
the
3 axis Kolb I have now....never measured it ....just talkin.
I did feel very safe in it, even though you were right out in the open just
like you almost are in a Kolb. I always had the feeling that it was a bit like
a leaf, that if you went too slow you really wouldn't stall per se, but just
mush a bunch ....also similar to a kolb. (although a Kolb will get closer to a
real stall easier than the Dac.)
For example, once I got too slow and too low in the dac and didn't have
enough airspeed to pull up before hitting the ground in a landing situation, and
hit the ground soooo hard that the Dac bounced almost staight up in the air
about 6 feet. When it came down again, as most mass is won't to do, it wasn't
aligned so perfectly with the ground so well and hit hard on one wheel.....and
broke the fiberglas gear...if you can call it that. No damage to me, and $25
later it was fixed and flying again with a new 1" gear rod. The point is ...it
acted like a parachute, because I SURE was not flyin it after the first bounce.
This feature seems to be a plus to me.

I owned a trike for a while. You can view my story about it on

From a purely intellectual point-of-view, the trike is pretty safe for our
kind of flying. But -- as you'll find out if you read my story -- from an
emotional point-of-view, having a rigid wing makes a lot of difference to
me, especially in terms of the _feeling_ of safety. Plus, if you ever
stall the trike in such a way as to create a "tumble", it's extremely
unlike you'll recover from it (even with a BRS) and you'll likely die.
In Europe it's popular, I believe, because of the lack of cost effective
hangar space: the wing can be folded up, put on top of the car and the
"chariot" placed on a trailer and they take it home.
I've read all kinds of stories about how they fly in groups all the time,
and fly through clouds for 15-30 at a time, and kinds of crazy stuff
because their weather is often bad.
I'm not trying to characterize ALL Europeans or trike drivers here... these
are just things I've encountered while I was flying trikes.

Trikes are a cool mode of aviating and just about as portable as an aircraft
can get. The wings are developed many many generations beyond the early
Rogalla concept. The only concern I have with em is my impression of a lack
of pilot protection in the event of a ground accident, seems to me that the
wing has a huge amount of leaverage to put that cross bar through your chest
and the rest of the hang cage is not near as robust as somthing like our
Kolbs. Just wouldn't want to do an endover in a trike. (or anything else now
that I think about it).

Wasn't someone asking about GPS's just the other day ?? I like my Garmin
GPSmap 196 just fine, but if I were buying again, that big screen looks very
good, and I would take a long, hard look at it. These ol' eyes are having a

I changed the subject line, too.
I bin called stiff-necked more'n once, too, but I think it was related more
to my nickname of Stub-Bourne than glasses. Actually, I have graduated
bi-focals, too, and over several pairs, (and a by-the-book - stiffnecked -
optometrist) have learned a little. Yah, even me. Anyway, when they make
those glasses, they figure how far away the average person is going to use
them to read with, and configure the close-up (bottom) portion of the lenses
to match that. Trouble is, I read with my book held closer than average,
and I had trouble making them work. On my 2nd pair, optometrist and I had
at it a bit, and the glasses STill didn't work..........he'd made them to
the "standard" spec, in spite of what I wanted. For my 3rd, and present,
pair, I had a talk with the new guy , and threatened mayhem (and
non-payment) if I didn't get my way. He was agree-able, and THIS pair have
initial focus at about 12"..........closer than even I read. This allows me
to focus right in on detail work; read comfortably at ANY distance, clearly
see an aircraft instrument panel, and still see clearly at distance. Quite
often, I'll lift the glasses with a finger, to see straight ahead thru the
close-up portion when working on something, so's not to need that zerk in my
neck. We've gone thru this topic before, and I well know that
some of you don't like, and won't have graduated glasses, and that's
fine...........your choice. I have them, love them, had standard bifocals,
(still have 'em) hated them, (and don't use 'em anymore) and I'm happy now,
too. I throw this out there only for thought and consideration by other old

The young whipper snappers have no idea what they are in for, I used to
read micrometers at work with 1 eye tied behind my back, now I cannot
see them with 4 eyes.
The worst part, it seemed to happen overnight.

I've had bi-and trifocals fer more than 40 yrs, and had to go to the mat
several (every) time had new lenses made. Told the measuring-mech what
distances I wanted, and would only pay for glasses that were made that
way. A close-up for reading books, charts, newspapers--a mid lense for
seeing the instrument panel in GA, and the far-things fer looking
outside. And the bottom sectors with no tint. Measured the distances I
wanted, and pressured the mechanic to adhere to these specs. Now I have
the mid-range sectors made to see the panel, kinda far away, on the
FireFly. Just gotta be firm--no pay for no see-um.

Hi Tom,
I have the Lowrance Airmap 100. It has the Aviation database in it. It
also comes with alot of accessories including yoke mount. Mine has worked
very well.
The new Airmap 500 came out around the first of the year which has driven
down the cost of the Airmap 100.
I have seen some new ones on Ebay from JA Incorporated. Probably can be
had for around 300.00 dollars.

I keep forgetting to answer you kind offer. I had a super time last year in
god's country and flying with you to Oshkosh. I'm honored to have you offer
a stop over at your place again. It was super flying in a flight of five
into Oshkosh and it would be nice to have at least that many this year. It
appears the Johns will be in Alaska instead of Oshkosh. How about Bill
Vincent and the rest of Iron Mountain group, are you guys interested in
flying along??? Maybe we can talk Uncle Craig and some others in meeting at
Iron Mountain or some other place for a mass Kolb flight into Oshkosh.

There may be more than one "Airstar" company, so I don't want to wrongly
slander anybody, but - I and several others locally at one time ordered
various items from a company called "Airstar Discount Sales" that always
had a big spread right in the middle of "Ultralight Flying" magazine, and
they were a source of great trouble, used parts in place of new, and parts
that were claimed to be Genuine Rotax Parts that were not. Those people
were Bad News.
If they are the ones you are looking for, be thankful you are not finding
them. You might order parts for a Cuyuna and get parts for a Yugo.
Not sure what you are looking for, but Olenik Aviation is a good place to
start, & I have had good results from Central Snowmobile Supply, they sell
and repair Cuyuna 340 & 440 engines.
