Over my years of flying experience, which includes, hang gliding, powered
parachutes, Cessnas, Cubs, and Kolbs, the most important thing I have ever
learned is this: I have control over the amount of risk that I expose myself to
in many situations. Doing required maintenance on equipment would fall into
that catagory.

18" tall to top of cap x 14" deep x 12" wide with the cap on the front
center fuel pickup tube rear center than it has a bubble sump front bottom.
I will have to turn it slightly to keep the sump off the tubing and give
lots of clearance for push pull tube. Ahh heck I send a picture off list.

Clay and all:
the testing is going fine the cowling. it is in three pieces on the garage floor
and seems to be able to maintain ambient temp in all sorts of wind speeds. when
the drier ( cloths direr ) is turned on the temp and humidity seems to rise
a little. When I get the weed blower out and some air passes by the parts there
seems to be no noticeable change in temp. when the garage door is open in
the morning and the Arizona sun hits it the temp appears to rise 15 to 20 degrees.
When I get it on the plane with a running motor these tests may all seem
in vain. been spending too much time on the plumbing, gap sil and fuel system.
The wiring need a few days work the controls are all installed i.e.. throttle,
choke, trim ect. One last color of paint to the leading edge of the gap sil
and we will be firing the engine. will keep you informed

hehe....not really...pulling ur leg pard!
Bryan sent me a pic of the tank he put inside his enclosure....from
challenger...their 10 gallon jug is 18 high by 12x14..with a dimple/bubble
sump on the bottom....it looks like it will fit nicely in the Flys
bay..which is now 15 inchs fore an aft since rearranging a 1/4 brace across
where the 12x12 -5 gal jug used to sit. It looks alot like the kolb jug
other than its bigger and the sump bump on the bottom.
I called Karen at quad-cities and ordered one today...130 sumpthin with cap
and pickups....dang...I oughtta be in the jug biz! They probably get em free
surplus from the wesson oil man!

FWIW, I talked with a guy who tested the rockets (that we use
for parachutes) for the military. He told me He never tested one that
didn't fire, even those that had been years past their rec shelf life.
Mildew &/or deterioration of the chute fabric is probably the biggest
worry. If your can have a rigger repack it, it would seem reasonable to

PS: Of course, you are volunteering to be the test dummy for these extended
inspection and repack times???
PSS: We need to be very careful giving advice to folks based on speculation
that might mean the difference of life or death. There are a lot of very
serious aspects to our sport of building and flying Kolb aircraft. Let's
have fun, but be careful. None of us are immune to gravity, or exempt from
"Murphy". If I was going to give someone advice on whether they should
extend the inspection and repack cycle of their BRS Balistic Recovery
System, it would be to follow the directives. If there are any questions,
direct them to the professionals at BRS.

Richard/Gang:
Now that we have the Ultrastars and Firestars behind us, it is enlightening
to know that the aileron counter balance weights will prevent aileron
flutter when correctly installed. Even with old sloppy aileron controls,
hinges, rod end bearings, etc. I remember chasing any minute looseness in
my aileron control system, trying to prevent the Ultrastar from getting into
aileron flutter. It usually happened during long cross countries, or coming
out of a loop too fast. On XC's it would start so slowly and gentlely I
would not realize it until it had blosomed into full bloom flutter. The
aileron bell crank right over and to the rear of the pilot's head would wear
and get sloppy in the welded on bushings. I remember taking some urethane
fuel line and hose clamps on each side on the outter ends, clamping pretty
hard to add some friction and take some of the slop out of the bell crank.
That's been nearly 20 years ago.
I met Richard at the Florida Flying Gator Fall Flyin the first part of
November 1987. I had stopped off there for the weekend and flyin during my
flight down to Miami and back. I was out flying early one morning, spied
the Ultrastar flying around north of the airstrip in an area of antennas up
near HWY 27 and the Florida Turnpike. I layed in on him and followed him
around a long time before he realized he had been shot down 47 times.
Richard extended his hospitality and I enjoyed his company and that of his
friends while at the airpark. Thanks Richard.

Garvelink...Pard..I know nuttin bout an ultrastar...only seen a couple in my
life....
And I oughtta say this...the only wing failures I have ever heard of on a
kolb have been since I have joined this list...and have been exposed to the
huge amount of Kolb experience here....and so far..for all those who have
missed the posts,,,. Neither fellas who busted their Kolbs...Blamed it on
the airplane. And they are still flyin Kolbs!
Just thought that oughtta be said!
Just so some a ya's dont get the wrong idea...AS I have said it
before....This FireFly I built last winter is my first Kolb....and the first
time I ever even got a ride in one..was the day after OshKosh last year.
Thanks to a gracious member here..I never really paid them much attention in
all mthe years past...thought they were too small in the cockpit...looked
funny..I dunno...They just never tripped my trigger as a bird I thought I
would like...I bought a Kit and built it because I could see they built
easy..and I got a good price on a Kit someone had barely started....The Love
affair started after I flew it.....

The Kolbs look the way an airplane is supposed to look, as far as I am
concerned. I like their looks, and especially the way they fly. That's all
I have flown for the past 20 years.
I remember sitting in the cockpit of my Ultrastar, in the Summer on a
beautiful clear day, 5,000 feet ASL, 25 mph, cut off Levis, t-shirt, and
flip flops. Like sitting on top of the world.
Once I was in the seat and strapped in and flying, my Ultrastar cockpit was
very similar to sitting in any aircraft I had every flown. I felt secure
and the the airplane was a part of me, and I was a part of it.
Kolbs are unique.

I remembered hearing when ballistic parachutes first came out that the
rockets were originally used for throwing a line from one ship to another
and were called LHR's rockets or something like that, so I did a search and
finally found this. May not be the same, but probably similar.

Hi Dale/Gang:
Shut your eyes and scream!!!
Seriously, if you get into flutter, chop the power, try and grab the stick
and get the nose up to bleed off airspeed.
High airspeed is usually present when flutter occurs, but not always.
On my Ultrastar, flutter came on, usually, very, very slowly. Sort of a
slight shuffle in the slack in the aileron control system. If not noticed,
or ignored, it can get ugly.
Some Kolbs never experience aileron flutter. The old Kolb Factory MK III
was put in and out of all kinds of attitudes, in smooth and rough air, and
air speeds. Never know of it even thinking about flutter. A point to
consider is, Old Kold used very little dope and paint on their airplanes
they took to S&F and OSH. The heavier the aileron, the more out of balance
it is, and the more supcetible to flutter.
The thing to do is install a set of aileron counter balance weights on your
ailerons and forget about flutter from now on, no matter how sloppy your
aileron controls and hardware get.
They are simple to install after the aircraft is covered and painted. In
fact, that is the way I prefer to do mine. Finish the wing through paint,
then install. I don't do any prep prior to that, like cutting out the
fabric from the end of the leading edge of the aileron tube.

Hi Ya'll:
Something I forgot.
You should also try to put pressure either left or right stick. If the
ailerons get loaded, they'll stop fluttering. That is used in conjunction
with chopping throttle, getting nose up, bleeding off airspeed.
