for all you Daiquiri Whacker's
LOL...yes....Daiquiri Whacker is one of the names I recall...I once got a
call from an enterprising fella who wanted an Honda engine OEM account for a
gas powered blender. When I set up the appointment to go see his prototype
and do the required testing..I was expecting to see a chicken feed
grinder..or something. To my suprise..He had our sample engine.(a 4 stroke
31cc Honda trimmer engine) on a stand with a Vitamix style blender pitcher
on top...WOW....I thought it was a joke. Then over on the bench he had 3 or
4 more with various 2 stroke's on em. He showed me all his competitors
machines and I was amazed that there was any market for stuff such as this.
His great marketing idea was that with all the anti-2 cycle sentiments out
there ...there was a real need for a 4 stroke "Enviromentaly friendly"
blender...Up to that time I had never even heard of a gas powered blender!
.
Hehe well I did the tests..and of Course I approved this application!, and
I dang near didnt get home from all the Gin an Juice I needed to consume to
make sure it was working properly!
Tuff duty I know..but someone had to tackle it!

Safety of the kolb ultrastar. or better name the red headed stepchild of kolb....
I am about to purchase a kolb ultrastar with trailor. I would like to find out
as much as possible about this aircraft. seems that some of the people on the
list think that this plane is due for the scrap heep. thank goodness they didnt
think about piper cubs that way. I need all information about making a buying
decision the trouble spots to look for how to tell if it has all the latest
mods that will make it safe. how to look for damage in the wing how to determine
the safety of the welds. Hell I know that this is a dangerous sport just
need info to make an informed discission. by the way how many of you guys
have ultrastars and how many are still flying. does anyone know of an inflight
breakup? I have heard that homer is a little worried about them. please
any info you could give me would be great.

Hi Ed/Gang:
Ed called me last night and asked my help.
I gave him some things to consider, to inspect, before he made the big
decision.
Don't believe the Ultrastar is "the red headed stepchild of kolb". It
was the best ultralight available during its time, about 20 years ago.
That is why I chose it as my first ultralight to build and fly.
The Firestar was a serious improvement to a new model from the
Ultrastar. In my opinion, a much better airplane overall.
I think you should be very cautious shopping for and purchasing an old
Kolb or any other brand of UL. I imagine most of them were built by
people like me, first time amateur builders with a lot to learn about
the hobby. How it was built, maintained, stored, and flown are
extremely important to me. Looking inside those wings to see if all
the lateral bracing and other critical components are there and in
good shape. How do you know how the wing is built and what shape it
is in if you don't look for yourself?
There are Ultrastars out there flying today in good shape. There are
also a lot of Ultrastars out there that are not airworthy and probably
should be scrapped. Some people would love to see you one of them,
cheap. I have seen tailbooms spliced, something I would not do. On
top of that, the splice would have been incorrectly done, even on a
small non critical item.
Be careful, take your time. I know you have Eipper Quicksilver
experience, so you should probably try to get up to speed on 4130
steel fuselages like the ones on Cubs. Be sure and take a careful
look at cables and nicopress sleeves. Initially, I did all my US
cables the wrong way. My Brother took one look at them and knew they
were hazardous and incorrectly squeezed. I would have busted my butt
had they not been corrected. Again, on cables: Some nicopress
sleeves look correct but would not pass the go/no go test. Too loose
and they will pull will little effort.
Take care and good luck.

Hi Richard
Thanks for your response but my CPS catalog shows the 377,477,503 needing a
.886 inch spacer and the 53d2 needing a 1.017 inch spacer. They also
mention a square relief hole to allow for the bendix drive gear. and
instructions would be provided in the kit. Anyone have those instructions?
Thanks

FireFlyers and List,
Finished installing it today. Too windy to fly. Checked everything over and
found a cracked radiator support. So no flying for a few days.
The reason for the elevator position indicator is to put a number on where the
stick is positioned rather than trying to remember did it feel lighter or heavier.
This has been brought about by experimenting with pitch trim due to throttle
setting and by raising or lowering the propeller thrust line. Also, it will
be helpful to tell me if I am running out of elevator when using flaperons.
If you would like, it can be seen at:

Thanks for the info the other night on the kolb us I have to travel to richmond
virginia to pick it up and want to know what to look for before I make the final
purchase. It is a nice looking plane. It is true that I have about 100 hrs
in a quicksilver weight shift. what an interesting plane. remember riding
it up in a thermal to 6000 feet then shut off the motor and flew for 25 minutes
to the ground at about 20 mph. I went on to get my ga license private single
engine land and private glider rating. The kolb us has facinated me ever since
I read about it. I would like to get a set of the plans that have all the
fixes and mod updates so I can eventually apply them to this plane. Again John
Thanks for the advice.

Tim,
I agree 100% - I don't know about it on a FF either. Neither do I know what
it weighs. But I am certain it could be lightened some by getting rid of
some of the sheet metal. Ever since I saw Sandy Hudson fly his "Hudson
Thing" powered by 2 out-of-the-box Brigs engines I have had this lingering
fascination with putting them to use in an aircraft.

This was for a different need, Ed. That little 4 ah gel cell is still going
strong, and is handy for long term powering of my camera, as well as the
GPS, intercom, etc, but I can't remember the name of the guy who sent it to
me. My camper's so-called deep cycle battery is getting a little weak, and
I want to go to 2 - 6 volt golf cart batteries. Lots of golf cart dealers
here in Golfer's Heaven, but they don't give a hoot for small sales like
mine. I slipped a disc in my back a few weeks ago, and am
only now getting to where I can work on Vamoose (or anything else) again.
Tomorrow, I'm going to repair a brake fluid leak and pressure bleed the
brakes, and start getting it ready. Not too much to do now. How
are things going with you back in sunny Florida ?? Aren't you glad you
don't live up in the North East area ?? What a winter ! ! !

Hi Everybody:
We all know about Craftsman lifetime warranty on their top of the line
tools.
I have a Digitorq Torque Wrench I mail ordered from Sears, probably
20+ years ago. I was state of the art back then and cost $39.99. By
the time I got it through shipping it was about $42.00.
My torque wrench had been having some old age pains, was getting
unrealiable. Would not always click when it got to the specified
torque dialed in. It is 1/2" drive and has a long handle. This
reliability problem can create big problems.
I took in down to Montgomery where the nearest Sears Store is located.
Walked in to get my torque wrench swapped one for one. To my
surprise, the warranty is 90 days for calibration and 1 year for
manufacturer's defects. Not too cool. Probably cost me more to have
it repaired and calibrated than to buy a new one. The new one's look
exactly like this old dinsour and are $89.99.
Never mind. I'll have to shop for a torque wrench else where.
Probably end up with a bar type like my little 3/8" drive.
Take care,
john h

Hi Ed,
One more thing to keep in mind. The belt reduction drive have been out of
production for a long time and if repairs, belts, etc are needed - it may
be a challenge.
Most other parts could be fabricated if necessary. If you are a machinist,
then not to worry about the re-drive. Also another perspective to keep in
mind: If you can buy it cheap enough, you could plan on doing a tear down
and thorough inspection and recover, etc. Still could be a good deal. Or
do the same with a FS and have the such niceties as large dia prop (with
lots of ground clearance), enclosure and spring gear.
The US was and still is a great flying AC, but the FS is nicer to live with,
esp when it gets colder.
Good luck,
Dennis

John,
Had the exact same problem--both with wrench, and Sears. I did a kinda
halfassed recalibration by comparing my readings with an in-calibration
wrench. Bored/tapped six holes in half-in steel plate. Used dry cad
plated bolts with two split washers. The "good" wrench pulled down three
bolts, as did mine. Turned plate over and used nuts with two washers.
Then using no washers. Both wrenches were the same within abt 5 In-#.
Mine says to Always reset to zero when not in use. Friend in nearby
hangar didn't reset, and his was way off--reckon the spring in handle
took a set.
Things that made variences are: new vs old bolts/nuts; plating; oil!!!;
and sneaking up on a reading vs a big pull that almost clicks.
Yer mileage will vary. Not intended as instruction. Waiting for the ice
to go out.

i worked for sears for ten years from 1973-1983 and i would get all the
old guys (and now i'am one of them) and they would bring all kinds of tools
in and and try and get a replacement when they broke an allen wrench or a
drill bit...these items are not covered under hand tools and we would not
replace them because you can just lay into a drill and snap it! same thing
with a torque wrench as sears does not consider this a hand tool...but i can
remember one time when i told a guy that i would not replace it because of
that reason and his looked like he had put the biggest cheater bar on that
thing and bent the head...he finally went over my head and was yelling at a
manager and as he dragged the manager out by the front door and said
look..what does it say above the door...i quote..satisfaction guaranteed...i
rest my case...we ended up giving him a new wrench knowing that he would
always be a sears customer and sears is always aiming to please a
customer...this would never happen today's world but you can 1 sour customer
and he tells 100...squeaky wheel always gets the grease.
Jon, if you would of yelled loud enough you would have gotten your way.

Sandy, you really got me in the books on this one, and what an eye opener!
You must have a newer catalog, my old 1995 CPS catalog really does show
part # 852-370 for the 447, 503 and 532, and also says it is 25mm or 1"
high. BUT the 2003 Lockwood catalog says that spacer is .89" tall, and is
only for the 503, not the 532. Lockwood says use the #852-372 spacer for
the 532. BUT my 1994 LEAF catalog says to use the #852-374 spacer for the
532. And unfortunately, the Kodiak Research webpage with the .pdf parts
catalog (which ought to be the final answer) does not list the 532
application for the accessory starter. (page 186) In fact they don't even
list the 532 at all... anywhere...
What you need to be careful of is how long your ring gear bolts are and
where does the ring gear end up. If the bolts are too long, (because the
spacer is too thin) they will go to far into the mag and hit the coils on
the 532. Aside from that, obviously the the ring gear and the starter
bendix have to be spaced right.
If you can get the starter to fit at the 6 0'clock position, you don't need
to cut anything, there is already a cutout there. If you need to cut a slot
at the 12, 3 or 6 o'clock positions, contact LEAF. The old LEAF catalog has
a blurb about contacting them for further instructions for making those
cuts, maybe they can help you.

I put over three hundred hours on one with a Subaru car engine on it, I
say go for it if the price is right. It would make a good first plane,

in the wing how to determine the safety of the welds. Hell I know that this
is a dangerous sport just need info to make an informed discission. by the
way how many of you guys have ultrastars and how many are still flying.

Is anyone using a Facet Fuel Pump in place of the mikuni? If so is a regulator
needed? I have a 582. Thanks

Giovanni..
I am using a mikuni up close to the engine...with a facet down below the
tank...all in one line...I start it after letting the facet run fer a
bit...then turn it off...make sure the Mikunin is working, then usually turn
on the Facet during takeoffs and landings...and generally not running it
while cruiseing....Uhh..unless I forget to turn it off after takeoff and
climbout!!!!

The Zenoah engines used to be imported by the Tennesee Prop folks, the two
cylinder horizontal opposed engine was real popular with TEAM builders.
They are around 490cc and are real close to a 503 rotax in power. They run a
single poly V belt drive.
I know a fellow who used to have one on his award winning Loehle Sport
Parasol who said it was pretty much the same power as a 503. I have not kept
in touch with him over the years but as far as I recall he had good service
from the Zenoah.
Sincerely,
Denny Rowe
