Just make sure you get the lowest pressure Facet pump, they have several
differant ones.

Tim,
I agree 100% - I don't know about it on a FF either.
Neither do I know
what
it weighs.>>>>
if you look at engines such as
Kohler,Briggs,Onan, etc. you find that relative to
their hp rating they weigh too much for most single
seat UL's and they don't have enough hp for 2
seaters.....
But I am certain it could be lightened some by
getting rid
of
some of the sheet metal. >>>>>
well you could do that but then - how would you
cool this thing? i doubt if "free air" would be
sufficient. you would have to have an oil cooler
too....
Ever since I saw Sandy Hudson fly his "Hudson
Thing" powered by 2 out-of-the-box Brigs engines I
have had this
lingering
fascination with putting them to use in an
aircraft.>>>>>
obviously your not alone. i'm sure everybody would
love to have a Briggs,Honda,Kohler or whatever.
however, i doubt if anyone would go into business
converting such engines for aircraft use anyway... the
engine manufacturers would sue you "into the dirt". of
course, there's no law against a private citizen doing
it.
reminds me of that guy Leon Davis who built that
all aluminum plane that goes about 120 mph on a 28 or
so hp Briggs engine. he said that he received a letter
from Briggs's lawyers telling him that if he "goes
into production" using Briggs engines they will "sue
him for all that he's got"!
FYI - many of those Briggs engines, including the
new ones, are not manufactered by Briggs, their
manufactered in Japan by Daihatsu. Briggs, like many
other manufacterers, are outsourcing production
overseas... tim

Jack,
I'm always fascinated by the devices you come up with to check on your
modifications. I'm thinking I could have used your indicator when I
was messing with changing my angle of incidence of the horizontal stab
on my FireFly. I was and am still going by feel and performance of
the plane. At least now I don't have to hold forward on the stick at
cruise or have my flaperons deflected to compensate. You indicator
would have helped to document the change.
Good work,

It's worth the trip to the New Kolb factory in London, KY.
to get transition training in their Kolbra. It's basically the same
configuration as the Firestar.
I am a GA pilot and went from flying a Grumman TR2 with a 160hp engine to a
firestar with a 447 Rotax. 40hp. I wouldn't attempt to fly the Firestar
without the training.
Just contact the New Kolb Aircraft Co. and try and set something up.
There GREAT people to work with.

tank...all in one line...I start it after letting the facet run fer a

Don and all,
I have my facet plumbed parallel to the pulse pump as recommended by Rotax
and use it to fill the carbs before the initial start of the day. ( I empty
the float bowls post flight unless I know I will be flying within a week or
two.) I do not run my facet pump at all after that. The most probable time
for an accident is during take-off or landing. I don't like the thought of
being in a damaged aircraft with an electric fuel pump running and squirting
fuel everywhere. I plan to install an inertia switch (one that fits a 96
Taurus will work well) in the electric pump circuit to open the circuit to
the pump in the event of an accident, then I will run the pump on take-off
and landing. BTW I have a fuel pressure indication and alarm on my EIS so I
should get an alarm a few seconds before the engine quits from a failed
pulse pump.

My 3 cents worth...

Hi Steve G/Gang:
When you turn off your master switch, does that not turn off the
electric fuel pump?
If one has the time and forethought, good idea to kill the master
before impact. Cuts down on the chances of an electrical spark
igniting spilled fuel.
Take care,

This may be a dumb question , But where do you check the pitch on an Ivo
prop, At the tip? Also what is the purpose of the 1/2 inch holes on both sides
of the gearbox on the 447. Does it hurt anything to leave them open. Im pretty
sure that is how the factory Firefly is set up.

Get a 4 blade prop, or 5 if you have to. Would look cool and is probably
cheaper then getting a new gearbox. You will have the quietest prop around.

I need some help. I purchased an e box with 3.47:1 for a 503 I was going to
put on the MKIII. I found a deal on a BH 582 new and purchased it. No GB.
Now I discover I cannot put a large enough 3 blade prop on the 582 e box
combo. All that to ask what ratio and prop most are running on a 582? Thanks
