Yeah,
What is the next project John?
When you said you picked up the tail kit in Washington I figured it must be
an RV, but if you are using your 912 engine, it can't be a Vans aircraft.
Come on, the suspense is killing me. :-)

Yes tell us what you are building. Hey is this like the owing a home when
you get it like you want its time to sell?
Let us know if you will be making Oshkosh this summer, we will save a
camping spot for you and you Kolbra. If you can throw out a drogue chute to
slow down enough you are welcome to fly in with hopefully a gaggle of Kolbs
and maybe a kitfox.
Also if you or anyone else are flying thru mid lower Michigan this summer
you are welcome at my home/stip anytime. Please don't do like Larry Bourne
and wait till I'm at Oshkosh to swing thru.

If you're smart, everything you have is for sale....at the right price.
Hmmm, how about a long wing sonex , 912 powered? Nah, guess
not since he's going for a tail section and the sonex is bent tin.
For me the ultimate off the shelf toy would be a Stemme motorglider.

John H. and List members:
I have had a problem in the past that sounds similar to yours. On
occasion, I have also heard loud strange warbling noises when pushing the
xmit button on my Icom hand held radio while the David Clark intercom was
on. No problem with the intercom off however. The funny thing was, when I
ripped everything out and took it home, I had trouble duplicating the
problem. Eventually sent the intercom back to David Clark and had some
phone discussions with one of their technicians. Apparently, my problem is
caused by the intercom being too close to the transmitting antenna. You
may be a bit limited in your options there, but to the extent that you can,
try to maximize the distance between the two. The David Clark guys added a
capacitor to the intercom that they said would help, but there apparently
wasnt a guaranteed-to-always work solution other than further separation
between antenna and intercom. They also advised me that using brand new
batteries in the intercom would help, as that somehow provides additional
capacitance. Cant say I understand all the issues here, but I have done
what they suggested and have had good success.

Erich/Gang:
I think you probably save me about 1,500.00.
What you say duplicates what I have experienced.
January flight was about 4.5 hours with full battery (aircraft 12V).
Then the airplane sat for 6 weeks. During that time the bat went
completely dead. Last flight was operating primarily on the
alternator. Bat never came up above 6 volts without the alternator.
Radio was crystal clear.
I have experiemented with different antenna, from wire whip to rubber
ducky. Mounted the rubber ducky on the radio, right in front of the
intercom and it worked ok. Also under the nose pod in place of whip.
Worked ok there too.
I talked to Mark Kelly at Sigtronics. He is sending me another wiring
harness for the intercom. Also a resistor (or somthing) to wire in
the system to give me more head phone volume. Says that the intercoms
sometimes eat up hand held radio volume without this fix.
As long as I can talk to Control Towers and FSS I am happy with what I
have.
If this fix give me more volume with my little ICOM A3 so I can
understand other aircraft I fly with, I will be happy.
Thanks for the information. I think you helped me solve my problem
and save a bundle.

Fellow Kolb enthusiasts,
Times change and flying requirement also change. For some strange reason my
wife thinks I am having way to much fun flying by myself and wants to join
in.
My new project is a Zenith S.T.O.L. CH 701. With the 912S on it, the wife
and I can go about anywhere we want to and still stay low and low. This
will also allow me to build out of metal which I have wanted to do for a

quieter than mine). But he said, if it has any downside, it's that when
he's flying low and slow, he can't see out of the front because the angle

happy hours flying it, but I thought I'd mention that so you could mentally

Robert,
I got a ride in a 701 last fall and I thought it was a great airplane with the
exception of the obstruction of the cowling in front. For us Kolbers, this would
be quite a change.
On landing, I could not see over the nose. This was very disturbing to me. I liked
the idea of having a plane that was faster than a Mark III and just as slow
as an ultralight, but the visibility in front would be almost unacceptable for
me.
Now if someone would design an all-metal plane like this with good visibility,
they've got a market. The CT Cruiser (CT2K) is very close, but is a composite
plane and very expensive.

Steve,
All the comments are good ones. An additional consideration is that
that UltraStar might be an older model where the wing folding u-joint is on
the front spar instead of on the rear drag strut. The later models moved it
to the rear so the folded height would clear a 7ft garage door. The front
joint version will not & probably will neither clear an enclosed trailer.
Your options are to either, remove the wings (one bolt) & place their
leading edge on foan & secure to the walls, or you could just remove the
bolt & lower the wing while its still hanging from the rear bracket. In
that case you'd need to hang it with eg., wire & securely tie off the top &
bottom to keep them from flopping around. I had to do this every time I
trailed mine. It was no big deal, I just hung them with a stiff wire &
bungeed them secure, & I also replaced the bolt with an AN bolt with a tab
in place of the hex head, ground the threaded tip slightly round to
facilitate aligning holes (& help prevent threads from scrapping hole on
every use) & used a wing nut & clip in place of the nylock nut. Was quick &
easy & allowed wing to hang low. ...Richard Swiderski
Ps: if you use the wing nut method, make sure the nut is snug, as a simple
pin in this position would not be sufficient.
In a short time I am going to go pick up an ultrastar. I will trailor it
back in an enclosed tralior. how can I protect the wings from damage on
this long commute about 500 miles + -- will it ride in the retracted
position ok.

Congrats on the new project!
I also hope to build out of metal someday and will most likely go with the
Sonex. After riding in an RV-8 last summer I do not have any reservations
about the visibility of a low wing airplane, the RV-8 exceedes my Mk-3 in
visibility. They both are far superior in this regard than any other planes
I've experienced.
However as the Sonex doesn't fly as slow as a Kolb or 701, I'll just have to
keep my Kolb for slow flying sorty's. :-)
Take Care,
Denny Rowe

As long as we are dreaming...
If I could afford another plane in addition to my Kolb, I'd also go
for Bob Bean's dream of a motor glider. The most fun flying I ever did was
chasing thermals in my old UltraStar with the engine off & listening to the
wind whistling by my ears. The only plane that could tempt me into selling
my Kolb is Steve Whitman's Buttercup with an incredible speed envelope. If
I remember correctly it's like 40 to 130mph. It's a tube & rag, scratch
built kit, side by side, tractor. Its rough field capable & has a good rate
of climb. I believe it has retractable front leading edge & flaperons.

Gas Prices
Amazingly simple logic with the most sound probability of results I've ever heard!
This Doctor has his head on straight! More aspects of our economy are effected
by the cost of petroleum than most anything. Simply think about what he's
saying and I think you'll agree:
Join the resistance!!!!
I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer.
Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.
Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE
than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last
April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't
continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas.
It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.
Please read it and join with us!
By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap.
Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded in my town.
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that
the cost! of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take aggressive
action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers.
With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take
action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if
we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas!
And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars,
we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if
we all act together to force a price war.
Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the
two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not
selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices If they reduce
their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact,
we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's
really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...keep reading
and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least
ten more (30 x 10 300) .. and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300
x 10 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation
of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three
million get excited and ! pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million
people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed
it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.
(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is
send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician.
But I am ... so trust me on this one.)
How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more
people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be
contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that
much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference.
If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM
DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

John,
I am contacting you off list because I don't want to sound like I am
advertising for ICP - I have flown the 701 and got hooked. The one I flew
in had the 100 hp Rotax and the two of us - probably nearing 500 lbs in the
plane, were off the ground in 90 ft. I was blown away!
I only had a couple squaks with the 701.
1) it was very rudder intensive, rudder pressure seemed a necessity in all
phases of flight. The owner explained that it was because of the "all
flying" rudder, advantageous I'm sure when extreme authority is necessarry
but not what I'm used to. I luke to fly with my feet on the floor more than
not.
2) We did simulated engine out and the thing is merely a very controllable
lawn dart. The glide is STEEP! Scared me a bit the first time. I
seriously doubt the 10:1 glide ratio they advertise.
Regardless, I had to have one, started saving the $ and kept enjoying the
ultrastar and firestar - then a friend introduced me to the Savannah and
now I have researched it and decieded it is for me. Basically the same
plane - very similar performance. Apparently ICP was tooling up to make
701's for Heintz when something went bad with the deal.
What sold me on the Savannah?
1) CNC Machined - all the holes are cut with a lazer - no deburring, and no
cutting or fitting skins. Assembly time really is about 250 hours - I've
spent more time than that on the ultrastar repairing wing ribs.
2) The kit is Complete! Every nut, bolt, hose, clamp, washer, engine
gauge, everything!!! - in the crate! No waiting for months for part number
%$#%! BOLT IT TOGETHER AND GO!
3) Performance - still slow and still a bit faster than the 701. Really
does glide like a GA plane. And AHHHH ! Feet on the floor for cruise.
I'm sold and now they have a new speed wing comming out after flight
testing in March - I'm waiting on it - promises 115+ cruise with 100hp and
only 1 mph increase in stall. I'm not saying the Zenith is a bad choice, I
really like it, I just think there's mor bang for the buck with less
headache. I helped a friend build a 601HDS and it seemed we always needed
to order something we didn't have. And i can't tell you how many skins and
all we had to redo because I am mathmatically challenged.... GOOD LUCK and
congrats on getting the wife in on the hobby! Hats off to you. Dave

Larry,
If the seas cooperate when you are in my neck of the woods I dont see why
not. Normally you have to check the wind & seas the evening before you go the
next morning. I dont like to go out in more than 2 ft seas. No fun! I havent
heard much on the state of vamoose. Im looking for a hanger in my area so I
can finnish my Firefly. I have the land south of Houston where I am going to
put in a grass strip. It just takes time & money.
