That was fun guys. Right, the aircraft has to be weighed with the tail up in flight
attitude and for the RV8 you place a level on the canopy slider on top of
the tail section. I need to go back and take another look at the Kolb builders
photos of W&B. I may be wrong, but I think they were weighed with the tail sitting
on the ground at the same level as the mains. Does Kolb offer W&B figures?
Or the correct way to do this?

Paul,
My Mk-3 manual has weight and balance info that explaines the whole process
including the proper AOA to set the wing at.
Doesn't your Kolbra manual have this info?

Paul,
In My FireFly builders manual, It says to raise the tail untill the wing is
at 9 deg..
For me a 5 gallon bucket with a 2x12 board on the top...a small sheet of 1/4
plywood, and the scales all stacked up and placed under the tailwheel
accomplished this.

You select 5 (or whatever) nearby runways, and a team of people place a
cards in sealed envelopes at each location.
The contest is: each pilot flies to each spot, and collects an
envelope. When they all return to the home airport, the cards are revealed
and whoever has the best hand, wins the contest. (It gives you an excuse
to go flying! <g>)
In my experience, there are two kinds of participating pilots at Fly-Ins...
the skill player, and everyone else. Everyone else goes and does the Poker
Run while the skill players do the torpedo run, bomb run, critter drop, etc.

Paul,
That info should be in your builders material. I can't speak on yours
specific model but we had to raise the tail on the FireFly. Suspect you
would have to also on your model plane. Read a head and find the weight
and balance info.

Haha... no, not live critters... It's something we do to get the kids involved:
We get some giant sized nets and give them to the kids... Then the pilots
get stuffed animals (critters) and take them up. For safety, we keep the
planes no lower than 200 feet, and the kids off the runway until the
critter drops... (by that time, the planes' energy would take it well past
the kids)... then the kids rush on to the runway and try to catch the
critter before it hits the ground. The kids absolutely LOVE it! The one
who catches the most (or, used the most effort, according to the judges) wins.

Paul and All,
The Kolbra manual has the Weight & Balance information on pages A-12 and
A-13.
There are a few inconsistencies in the numbers. It has the CG rang listed as
both 25%-35% and 20%-35%.
I have limited mine to 28%-38% and the flight testing has shown that this
range is realistic and flyable. With the CG at 25% and two people in the
cockpit, you can't raise the nose for liftoff.

Richard/all,
I agree , These Digital Cameras are GREAT for what were doing. I was
keeping my log with a regular 35mm camera, but it was only good for keeping
a record of things...
The digital camera can really help in the building process...by instantly
sending a picture of a problem area...or your idea Richard, using the
picture to make your design...
And if somebody's got an area that isn't clear to them , you can go
to your bird and snap a couple of pictures and send them immediately.
What I'm tring to say is...
GET YOURSELF A DIGITAL CAMERA....YOU NEEEEED ONE !!!

Bob Bean/List;
Bob, I envy you and the folks you are fortunate
to be flying with. Those 'games' that you speak
of are the kind we used to do back in the 80's.
The club that I belong to has about 30-35 members
and NOT ONE of them is willing to be included
in, or to support others involved in, these events
of SKILL ENHANCEMENT.
Proficiency does not come to us from the sofa.
We have to actually get out there and get in the
air. And hopefully, we have commerades that
will fly with us and critique us honestly (and in
humor when possible) to help us improve our
flight abilities.
I miss the "old style" flying, with the sense of
achievement and satisfaction that comes with it.
Keep up the good work. This list is AWESOME.

Can't believe over 2 weeks has gone by...........been pretty busy - except on Vamoose.
:-) I had to stop and think about where you fish, cause
we used to go out in some really nasty weather, out of Port Angeles, WA. Up there,
tho', you're only going a couple of miles or so, and while a lot of it is
really steep, sloppy tidal/wind/current mix-ups, you're not out in it too long.
Kinda fun for a while, but it beats you to death after a bit. From what
I understand of your area, you must have to make very long runs out to sea,
and a heavier swell would get very tiresome & tear up equipment very quickly.
I sure hope the weather co-operates when I get there; I've heard and read a
lot about fishing in your area, and it sounds GOOD. Lar.
