Your post about the Craftsman Tork Wrench is not exactly accurate. I was
plant manager for the company that manufactured these wrenches for 23 years
and I purchased every competitors tork wrench I could put my hands on to
compare our wrench's quality to theirs. All Craftsman wrenches were
calibrated to +/- 3% and should hold their accuracy for years unless they
were abused in some way. The major culprit that will destroy the accuracy is
dirt or rust that may get inside your wrench. Another Tork sin is not
re-setting your wrench back to 0 after you use it. Any click tork wrench is
subject to inaccuracy if you tend to put side load pressure on the wrench as
you push or pull on the handle. The correct method to tork anything is to
keep your pressure only on the hand grip and pull or push in a steady smooth
operation until you hear or feel the click. As John H. mentioned earlier
the older wrenches were "state of the art" for their time. The new wrenches
are as accurate as the old ones were but the warranty issue is true. The
normal price for just re-calibration is just under $50.00 with minor
repairs. Not hardly worth it when a new one will cost you about $25 more
dollars. Note that most all commercial tork wrenches sold in the U.S. are
made at the same factory in Alpharetta Georgia, and have the exact same
internal working components. I know -- I built them. SK, KD, Blackhawk,
ATD, Armstrong, Napa, etc, and some models of Snap-on are all the same as
Sears Digitork. J.S. Technology was and is the largest manufacture of tork
wrenches in the States and I would have built Bending beam type wrenches too
if they could be manufactured to hold their accuracy. Bending beam type
wrenches are a total waste of your money. Stay with the click wrench if you
are looking for accuracy or buy a bending beam type if you don't care and
are shopping for price only. If you want the accuracy of Sears Digitork but
do not want to pay the price then shop for one of the other brands that I
mentioned. Remember they all have the same internal parts and the same
accuracy.

John,
Digitorqs are notorious for not being acurate. the old beam torques are the
most accurate. the digis can change from day to day.

I have both kinds..they both have their best uses. You can calibrate a
clicker
off a beam or if you're real fussy use a known weight and calc moment/arm
on it. My clicker is one of those cheapo taiwanese ones and is handy if you
are squoonched under a car torquing bearing caps or any place where it might
be tough to see the scale on a beam.
On another note, finally got back to working on the plane again. Threw
in the
towel on the tubeless tires and stuck tubes in. UPS man delivered a shiny
new 65" Powerfin B, 3 blade. The key word is shiny, sure hate to get bug
guts on it. Being about 13.5% smaller in circular area than the 70" I was
experimenting with, it will be interesting to see if it makes the little
suzuki 1.0L
happy. -BB, a little snow this morning. do not archive

I also built an aluminum gap seal for the Fly... and I put the wide velcro
on 100% of the side edges.... But I didn't trust the velcro enough to stop
there.... Riveted 4 little angle hooks onto the trailing edge corners of
the seal.... 2 on the top, 2 on the bottom... use two bungee cords to secure
the seal's trailing edge around the top of the cage.... The bungees are out
of sight and don't interfere with the BRS harness should it need to be
deployed... The cords really nail down that gap seal and keep it snugged
back against the leading edge.. takes an extra minute to hook it up when I
install the seal, but worth it in terms of peace of mind ... that seal would
really do a job on the IVO if it ever got back there...
Glad yours didn't come completely loose...

Gonna hafta do some research. Last night it worked fine; this morning it
doesn't. Too bad...........some of the responses were funny. Ah, OK,
just now I tried it again, and if you look near the top of the page, you'll
see where it says "Jump To," and an arrow beside "News Discussions." Click
that arrow, scroll down to "Nikon Talk," and click on it. As of 8:10 AM,
Saturday, 3/13/04, my message and the replies are about 7th from the top.
The forum moves pretty fast............in a couple of hours it may be way
down there, if there's no more replies. Way up if there is. The 2nd reply
from Bud Guinn, 6th from the top is amazing. I've got a lot to learn before
I can do that. Impressed Lar.

Duane the plane,
I drilled a couple of holes near the end of the gap seal that line up to
the keel tube in front of the engine. I installed an eyebolt and nuts in
each one with the "eye" of the eyebolt facing downwards. Then I got a
mini bungee cord (about a foot long and thin) that wraps once around the
keel tube and attaches crossways to each of the eyebolts. This has two
functions in that it dampens the vibrations in the gap seal and also
keeps it held down should the velcro fail.
Since I fold the wings each time I fly, I get under the wings and remove
the bungee cord from the eyebolts and link it to itself around the keel
tube so that I can take the gap seal off and don't lose the bungee for
the next flight.

Yes,
I have made it home in one piece. had gust from the west at 30 plane made
the trip in good condition and the trailor tracked well gave me a lot of
respect for the homemade enclosed trailor. Regarding the beam type torques
I have installed studs from a company out of michigan called raceware for
my deisel vw heads they make the best studs and they recommend that you use
a Beam type for the greatest accuracy and recommend that if you have a
digitorq that you have it calabrated often. They said every day.
This ultrastar rotates from the main spar so when I do the wings again I may
have to do some mods. All in all I think I got a good bargain with this
bird.
Thanks for all your help

I dont know if petroleium products will mess with the wing but there are
several for removing the glue on velcro and other things that you might want
to look at. I use a product called removeit 3M makes a citrus based remover
but probably best to talk to the manufacturer of your fabric to see if they
recommend something.

Subject: | Request: Information for Kitplanes Article (Interiors/Exteriors) |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Cory Emberson" <bootless@earthlink.net>
Hello!
I am writing an article for Kitplanes magazine that will feature builders who have
distinctive interiors and/or exteriors.
My deadline is rather short, so if you could email me as soon as possible, hopefully
by Tuesday, that will give me enough time to put it together.
Here are some of the criteria I'm looking for:
Interiors that are (one or any combination):
1. creative
2. inexpensive
3. very comfortable
4. lightweight
5. generally cool and different
6. distinctive in some way.
Exteriors that are:
1.. stunningly attractive
2.. original design
3.. historically accurate
4.. distinctive in some way
Other things to keep in mind:
1. How you came to design your interior/exterior (How you got your idea)
2. The reasons why you did it as you did
3. What benefits you had in mind
4. Any unexpected benefits (and/or pitfalls) there were
5. What you learned
6. How many hours you've flown with it (if completed)
7. How much of the work did you do yourself?
8. Did you have any professional assistance? How much?
9. The equipment and tools you used
10. How much time it took to build and install
11. The cost of building it.
12. Would you do it again the same way? Why?
Here are the photo requirements for Kitplanes: Photos must be 300 dpi at a size
large enough to use in the magazine, which is usually at least 3 x 3 inches.
If an image is 300 dpi at 1 x 1 inch, it won't be big enough to do any good. Hard
copy photos are good, too.
Thanks so much - I really appreciate your help!
best regards,

Subject: | FireFly Update and Mods.. |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Don Gherardini" <donghe@one-eleven.net>
Well everyone.....I have updated my Website a little..to reflect the mods
that are taking place.
Here is a link to page 14...the enclosure page..showing the method I used to
enclose the upper rear half of the cage..and the 10 gallon Challenger tank
is installed on page 15. The single strut mod is on a page labled strut mods
. Menu is on the bottom of each page.
NOW...keep in mind here..I dont recommend that any a you turds or anyone
else do this to a perfectly good FireFly. I just put up the pics so you can
see what I have done...and if anyone sees something they think is stupid..or
dangerous lemme know so I can examine what I have done. IF you just dont
like it, well...keep it to yourself!!! :) (grin).
...My apoligies to Dennis Souder who's work on designing this bird still has
not been equaled in this industry. It probably makes Dennis cringe when he
sees a great airplane like the FireFly all messed up like this..If I
designed this airplane..it probably would make me feel that away!...So
Dennis..you better not look at these pages pard. You have been awfully
helpful, cordial and respectful to me..and I think you designed the best
ultralight in the industry!...and...I believe it still is even after several
years! Hard to believe no body has done it since.

I have a craftsman that clicks when you get to torque. About 25 years old.
Just took it to work and had it calibrated. It's right on.
