Hello everybody,
I'm new to the Kolb community. I just purchased a '98 Firestar, with a Rotax 503
and Warp Drive prop. What a blast! I'm trying to educate myself as much as
possible, and the Kolb list has been fantastic. This Firestar has a Lexan partial
(back to your shoulders) enclosure. The previous owner told me of an inexpensive
latch that can be used to hold the door open. I've searched the archive,
and cannot find a reference to it.
It was described to me as attaching to the leading edge of the right wing, near
the wing root. It was spring loaded to extend and catch the door. If you know
the source on this latch, please let me know.
Thanks,
Jimmy Cash

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "pcondon" <pcondon@mitre.org>
My 1300 GEO Metro from a 1998 auto, 38,500 miles is for sale. My building
partner "decided" on a Rotax and wrote a check for over 15K$ with out really
informing me. He is the "money" partner and I am the "labor" partner.
Anyway, this engine is the proper one for the RAVEN 1300 SVS conversion and
has all the wiring, computers, oxygen sensors and part that RAVEN lists when
you snag one from the salvage yard. I yanked the engine this past February
from a local salvage yard. The car was in the yard less then 2 weeks when I
got the call. Started up and idled like a little electric engine (smooth),
no oil or smoke, no water in the oil, no oil in water. Engine located in
south NJ. I paid 600.00 which is the average price for this engine - I
jumped on the deal due the great condition and shape of the engine. It's a
DOHC, multiport fuel injection, electronic ignition engine that can run the
turbo option from RAVEN. This is a nice, inexpensive engine option. Raven
also has the engine mount options that they can assist in..i.e. no extra $$
lost or spent for the mount. Contact pcondon@mitre.org.

Possums,
I would like to have had your foresight, but I did not want to recover the
ailerons, elevators and rudder. So the easiest thing for me to do was to
add to what I already have.
I like your additions to the horizontal and vertical stabilizers too.
I still have a few more areas to drag reduction to do that will not violate
AC 103-7 regs. I want to fill the gap between the horizontal stabilizer and
the tail tube, add strut end fairings, and clean up the center section of
the wing top and bottom.

Might save yourself some time by doing your initial tests with taped
gaps. But I bet you already thought of that.
I have thought about doing the tape tests many times, but never got
around to it. Am very interested to see if filling those gaps between
upper and lower vertical and horizontal stabilizers and the tail boom
would be worth the effort.
One never knows until they try.

Hi Paul and all Kolbra builders,
The ASI was included in my kit but they sent me a 20-100 mph gauge instead
of a 20-120 mph gauge.
You will need a mag compass for the inspection.
Make sure the prop extension is for the 912 and not the 912ULS, they are
different.
Plan on several hundred feet of 18 gauge wire to run to all the switches and
breakers.
Don't forget some way to operate the ignition and starter.
If you can wire the radios yourself, that can save a lot but you still have
to have the transponder tested by a licensed radio shop.
Other than this, you are right on track. I quit keeping track when I went
initially over $37,000.

I was afraid that was what I was going to hear heheh....
Oh well!!! Wonder how TNK figured this plane could be built with a 912UL for
24K?
Thanks for the heads up on the prop extension John. Linda said that it was
made for the airplane and comes with the required bolts and nuts.
Only thing out of this list I made that I'm wondering if I can save a buck
or two on is the engine kit. It comes with the Titan SS exhaust system
(900.00 bucks) so that makes the rest total up to around $1100.00. It
includes the engine mount, lord mounts, throttle cables, choke cable, splitter
and all the hardware to mount the engine in the airframe. What do you think?

Paul P/All:
I think I would try and sweet talk Titan into giving me a price break
on the exhaust system, which, BTW, is the best system I have used so
far.
As far as $1,100 for the engine mounts, lord mounts, cables, etc., I
think I would save myself a buncha money by doing my own. The engine
mounts from the factory are probably the standard 1/4" thick angle Bro
Jim and I started out with 10 years ago. I highly recommend the 3/8"
thick angle which is much stronger and durable than its thinner
brother. I do not know if Kolb makes 3/8" or not. They are simple to
make. Hardest part is getting them layed out and drilled correctly.
I think I still have the CAD drawings John Russell drew up to make the
mounts for his SS and was so generous to send me a set also. They do
require a tiny bit of machining where the bolt holes get close to the
fillet of the angle.
A lot of that gear can be purchased at better prices by researching
the internet, by buying overhauled instruments, etc.
Might want to put some want ads in the publications and on the
internet for items you want and need.
I couldn't afford to build or fly if I didn't play this kind of game
to save a dollar here and there.
Ya'll take care,
john h

Paul,
I'll insert some alternatives below.
Finishing List
> Fuel cell $500.00 estimated
You can get a variety of racing fuel cells from Summit for a fraction of
this price, complete with foam anti slosh and Kaboom liners.
> ELT (A/S) $250.00
Aircraft Spruce has the Ameri-king AK-450 for $184.00 Part # AK-450 I think
it's about the most popular ELT going, D cell batteries also.
Altimeter(Kolb) $215.00
I have always used the less expensive and much lighter non certified UMA
altimeters from Aircraft Spruce such as Part # 10-22965. $113.95 Never have
had a problem with either of the two I own.
> ASI (A/S) $135.00
I have a UMA ASI in my Mk-3 from Aircraft Spruce 20-120mph part # 10-02915,
$114.95 it works fine.
> VSI (A/S) $201.00
> EIS (Kolb) $510.00
Get the VSI-ALT option on the EIS and you will also have a back up
electronic Altimeter, I leave my EIS altimeter set at zero at my field
elevation so I have MSL on my analog ALT and distance above field level on
my EIS. I like it and if you would happen to lose the EIS you really dont
need the VSI.
Engine $6800.00 (used 912UL 50 hrs)
You really don't need that engine, sale it to me for $6800 and put a tow
hook on the front of Miss Dixie. This will get you down to $25K :-) :-)
> Grand total $31588.00 (if I go with all the above and god knows
what else)
I don't think I helped a whole lot but every little bit helps, good luck
buddy.

Hi Gang,
My Kolb MKIII is doing great with 550 hours with a Rotax 582. I just finished
a Mini-Max 1100 with a used Rotax 503 and it's a dog. I have a new three
bladed Power Fin prop pitched to produce 6500 rpm's in flight. Does anyone know
what the static rpm should be, or
any suggestions to improve performance? Gross weight with me in it is 534 lbs.

That's a lot of money. I don't feel so bad now about the $23,000 I've spent
on my FireStar. How about a battery, headsets, antenna, hobbs, ignition
switch, turn and slip indicator, toggle switches, and a GPS? That's about
all I can think of right now. The list seems to never end.

The altimeter and vsi option in an EIS is great. Only problem is you can

Mark German has agreed to make me a really nice custom aluminum fuel cell for my
Kolbra and after several phone calls, I am convinced he has nailed the perfect
fuel cell for my airplane.
>Aircraft Spruce has the Ameri-king AK-450 for $184.00 Part # AK-450 I think

Right on target bro thanks. This is what I'm looking for. Because I have no idea
what I have what I'm pricing!
>Get the VSI-ALT option on the EIS and you will also have a back up

need the VSI<
Good idea. I Like it! Thanks another $200.00 you work for A/S?....hehe?

Tom,
I think your 503 is sick as hell. I got a 447 on my Max 1600R and it's a
tiger. Wide open my Warpdrive is pitched to turn 6600 rpm. It hardly ever
goes much over 100 feet for takeoff roll and cruises a bit over 60 at 5800
rpm. You might drop a line at the East Tennessee Lonesome Buzzards board
and see what those guys say also. It's a Max board. Good luck! Kirk

Subject: FAR 71.7
Dear Pilots:
It looks like I got some bad information from Selfridge ATC last week. A review
of FAR 71.7 revealed that airspace under FAR part 71 is described in nautical
miles. Therefore, the "6.6 miles" in the Selfridge NPRM would be in nautical
units. Apparently everything in aviation these days works in nautical miles
except for Selfridge ATC.
If this proposal gets approved Selfridge ANGB is going to be one large piece of
controlled airspace. This will effect on all operations at 57D except cutting
the grass.
I submitted my comments to the Feds tonight online. It was very easy to do. The web site to do this is http://dms.dot.gov. The docket number is "FAA-2003-16705". From this web site it is possible to look at the comments that have been submitted on this topic. My comment should be posted shortly.
Please consider submitting a comment regarding the expansion of Selfridge's airspace.
See you around the airport....

Gregg Stockman wrote:
Dear 57D Pilots:
Yesterday I spoke with Mike Lajoye, ATC Manager at Selfridge. I expressed our
concerns over the proposed expansion of the Selfridge's class D airspace. He
assured me they do not want to adversely effect any operators at 57D. He also
clarified there will be no approach extensions, north and south of their airspace,
outside of this expansion. Mike agreed to look into our concerns and
get back to me.
Today Mike got back to me and he further clarified the proposal. The "6.6 mile
radius" listed on the NPRM is to be in STATUE MILES. Apparently everything
in aviation these days works in nautical miles except for the FAA. Therefore,
both the north and south boundaries of Selfridge's airspace will not change.
The east and west sides of the airspace however will be expanded 1.3 NM (from
4.4 NM to 5.7 NM, as measured from the center of Selfridge).
This makes the expansion much smaller than it was first thought to be. With
this in mind, please review the NPRM and forward any comments you have to the
FAA.
The only operational change I see for myself is during a straight-out departure
from runway 18. At about 2.5 NM out I will either turn southwest bound, turn
east bound, or contact Selfridge ATC.
Thank you for your attention in this matter. Fly Safe.

OK, guys, to business............... I dug my Ameri-King AK-450 ELT antenna out

A little test tweaking showed it to be about as stiff as a piece of a coat hanger.
Whazziss ?? Are they all like this ?? Disappointing, what ?? I think
there's a stainless CB antenna buried out there somewhere, so might just try a
swap - if'n I can find it. Gotta have somethin' better than that. 2nd

Guys,
Betcha didn't know it, but I spent $6000 for a new Original Firestar kit
with 377 engine, paint, instruments, and trailer back in '86. Everything
I needed to fly. This was your "bottom-of-the-line" Kolb (except for a
Firefly :) I could easily sell it for $7000 today with the 447 engine I
have on it now. Bought it five years ago for $1200 (minus the price of
the 377).

Sounds like your rpms are in the ball park, but my guess is the engine is
tired and the prop pich is lower than you would run on a refreshed 503.

Hi Jim and Dondi:
Someone will let you know for sure when we are going to get together.
I think it is Fri or Sat night at Richard Swiderski's trailer in the
UL camp ground, but I could be mistaken. If I am, Richard can
straighten me out.
I will be flying down and camping with my airplane in the UL aircraft
parking/under the wing camping area.
Ya'll come see me if you get a chance.
I'll be looking for you all when I get there.

Yah, it IS nice, Mike, I remember looking at it last summer. One of the
nicest jobs I've seen, but what made the decision to sell it ?? Thought you
were going to fly out of your neighbor's strip ?? Folks, you oughta
see Mike & Dixie's magnificent place - back there in the rugged West
Virginia hills. Built the whole thing themselves, too. Almost enuf to make
me leave the Best Coast. :-) BTW, Mike, I've sold 2 - 13x19's of
that butterfly pic I took at your place, and 1 of the orange butterfly.
Take a look at them at:

Confuzzled,
<<bi-pole (di-pole ??) antenna .. quite a bit shorter than the expected
23" .. got a better match on the SWR .. haven't found my SWR meter>>
Bring to Monument Valley a 15 foot hunk of good, new RG-58 cable (any
Belden 82xx series of RG-59 will be fine, don't get it from Radio
Shack). I'll bring a BNC connector, crimping tool and noise bridge.
We'll make a flexible dipole antenna and tune it up on the spot. (At
least for free space conditions. It will change slightly when installed
near other metal.) Then you can listen to Boyd and me quibble over why
my version is better than his.

Maybe not. Reminded of a few years ago. Going down a northern
Minnesota county road in the Porsche with my mother-in-law at over an
honest 100 mph. She, then in her late 70's, turns to me and says, "Faster".
