After talking to you and making tentative arrangemnets on SnF I got ahold of Rich Swiderski, who you said was a nice guy, and who I found out lives only 12.5 miles away from me on Rt 475. I found out as usual that you were totally right, that he and Katy really are very nice people so we decided to go to the SnF together CAMPING OUT IN HIS HANDBUILT TRAILOR!! Now, I'm just a city boy who for many years as an engineer for GM learned how to drink a lotta coffee, and......well, I guess that's it ....drink a lotta coffee. Turns out that Rich is a do fella. Yup, he actually does things, like build his plane, modify it, works on an engine dream of his (which he will show at SnF) serves as model for upncomin Catholics through his church, and .......camps out with great planning, in a trailer that can be home to his plane or variegated people.....(just made that word up, cause along with the coffee ability, my imp thinks it has to be pretendin all the time). I'm the cook at SnF in the campgrounds in Rich's trailer. You are most welcome to come by with Johann and share whatever we have - I also bought a buncha food...things like weiners, n lettuce,n perppers n stuff. We got chairs for hangarflyin, food, juice, cots, some of my toys, and other amusements.Hope to see you for the first time .... watch out, now, my face is kinda funny lookin....and bring whomever you please...the more the merrier...singin isn't even out of the question. yer bud George Randolph firestar driver at The Villages

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Fackler, Ken" <kfackler@ameritech.net> Gentlemen: Yesterday was the first flight of my Mark II with its new engine and miscellaneous other mods and refits. I'm happy to report that it all went very well. As one would expect, there's some slight tweaking needed in the carb setup as the EGT temps were just a tad above nominal, but that's it. I can't believe how nervous I was. I don't think I was that wired when I did my first solo over twenty years ago. Of course, back then I didn't know squat about anything so I was probably too dumb to be scared! Summary: New Rotax 503 DCDI with oil injection New Bing 54 carbs New panel and new, shielded wiring throughout New EIS with ALT and VSI New starboard fuel tank and new fuel hoses throughout New fuel primer New tailwheel New fiberglass landing gear New pitot tube and added a static port New combo radio/GPS mount On that last item, one note. I've always had airspeed read very high. While it was tough to get an exact reading during the test flight yesterday because the air was so choppy, I'm qualitatively sure that the airspeeds are now much closer and may in fact be dead on. -Ken Fackler Resurrected Kolb Mark II / A722KWF Rochester MI

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Hauck" <jhauck@elmore.rr.com> Morning Gang: This is one of my favorite flying pictures. I took this one 13 July 2001, while on approach, several miles south of Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/Barrow%202001/Anaktuvuk%20Pass,%20Alaska%202001 Anaktuvuk Pass (pronounced "anna two vuck") is 85 sm north of Bettles and 60 sm west of Atigun Pass and the Dalton or Pipeline Haul Road. During the Summer, Bettles is accessible only by air. There are no roads from the Dalton Highway. I had been flying this route for the first time, for about an hour through the unpopulated, rugged Brooks Mountain Range, when the picture popped up in my windshield. It was a welcome sight. It would take the rest of the afternoon to fly from Anaktukvuk Pass to Gailbraith Lake, 70 sm, then north 125 sm, along the Dalton Highway (gravel road), to Dead Horse. At Dead Horse I am one flight away, 205 sm, from Point Barrow, northernmost point of the North American Continent, and my turn around point. Aren't these Kolb airplanes something! (it freakin snowed yesterday) Hi Mike/Gang: The friendly acceptance of my airplane, and me, was never in question in Northern BC, YT, and Alaska. To those I met, I was just another person traveling by light plane, a most common occurence up there. Most of the "rude" comments come from folks in the "lower 48", usually GA types that have never experienced the pleasure we do with our little airplanes. I did have one guy, a "chichaco" as the Alaskans call us rubber necking tourists, ask he, "What the Hell kind of contraption", my airplane was. He did not get an answer from from me. I was up on the tailboom refueling, just prior to departure from Bettles for Anaktuvuk Pass. He had flown in to Bettles on one of the tourists flights so they could say they had been north of the Arctic Circle. Take care, john h DO NOT ARCHIVE

--> Kolb-List message posted by: The Kuffels <kuffel@cyberport.net> Boyd, <<vertex standard vxa 700 .. antenna .. resonant from the bottom of the fm broadcast band to 162 mhz .. multielement dipole or a traped dipole>> The Vertex Standard (nee Yaesu) at $380 looks like a real value. For the price of an aircraft handheld you get FM broadcast, aircraft vor/localizer nav, aircraft com, ham 2 meters and weather. I'm looking forward to seeing it as well as you and the gang at Monument Valley. If you really needed resonance from 88-162 MHz, the only way to go would be a log-periodic (that takes me back to the mid-60's with Hy-Gain Electronics). Now that would be something to see mounted on top of a Kolb. Of course, since you are only transmitting on 118-130(or so) and 144-148 then a multi-element flexible dipole might work quite well. The trapped dipole is mechanically and electronically more complex and less desirable since the critical application is the lower frequency. In other words, aircraft com would suffer the losses and radiation inefficiencies of the traps. Perhaps a vertical X with about a 30 degrees included angle and the coax running straight down from the intersection of the legs. Make the 4 legs out of coax braid (RG-11 braid even better) for slightly more broadband performance. If you don't mind cable which is a few years old, I can bring down enough RG-58 to really experiment. I'll bet the receiver's performance can easily make up for any out of band inefficiencies. We should set up an electronics seminar and charge admission. Take care, Tom Kuffel Whitefish, MT Building Original FireStar

    Subject: Re: Off Topic, antennas
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Bob N." <ronoy@shentel.net> Of course my antenna design/test days of late '40s are long past, but I really doubt that any antenna known to man (?) can be designed/constructed to be "resonate" over any band of frequencies. If you define resonance at that frequency which delivers the maximum energy to the receiver (or the maximum energy from the transmitter to the area surrounding it), both actual and mathematical tests bring out the fact that resonance occurs at one discreet frequency. If you are willing to say that the circuit(antenna) will still deliver an output somewhat diminished from the maximum, then you can say that at frequencies that are different than the center(desired) frequencies, you will have less gain. Many antennas are advertised as have a "bandwith" of x frequencies, maybe meaning that the antenna has gain of 6db to 3db over the band of 120-130 mHz. This means that the gain falls off from 125mHz (6 db) to 3 db at the end frequencies. It's only resonate at 125 mHz. While it's true that there exist several multi-element antennas that exhibit a reasonable "flat" gain over a range of frequencies, these are not practical for (small) aircraft. LogPeriodics and discones for instance. Flame away! Bob N. do not archive...just tech rant

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Hauck" <jhauck@elmore.rr.com> Hi Everyone: I just got off the telephone with Homer Kolb. It was great to talk to him again, as always. He is really busy, as he always is. However, when I started telling him about the Unplanned 2d Annual Kolb Flyin at Monument Valley, his ears perked up and I was able to get him to commit to the trip unless something unforeseen comes up between now and then. He sounded as excited about this flyin as the rest of us who were there last year and all the new folks that are planning on making the journey for the first time this year. I am going to keep my fingers crossed and include Homer in my prayers. Hopefully, a good word here and there may be of benefit to get Homer and Clara Kolb out to our flyin. Folks, everyone is invited to attend. Do not have to be a Kolber to make the journey. However, we may convert ya if you are not careful. Would also like to give Bruce Chesnut, owner of The New Kolb Aircraft Company a personal invite to attend. I have not talked to him or any of the other Kolb people except to let them know that we are going back out this May. I will try to depart for Sun and Fun in Miss P'fer in the morning. Should be down there tomorrow evening. However, the weather is "iffy" and I may not get out of here until Tuesday morning. Will play it by ear and see you all down there when I get there. Take care, john h

It's only resonate at 125 mHz. .. multi-element antennas .. "flat" .. over a range of frequencies, not practical for (small) aircraft. LogPeriodics and discones for instance. .. Flame away! .. just tech rant>> Nothing to flame about. Of course, you are correct the narrow (pun intended) definition of resonance is a discrete frequency (or discrete set of frequencies for multiple radiating elements and 3 times these frequencies and 5 times this set and 7 times etc., to be technical 8 ). No doubt you understood Boyd and I were using the term as shorthand for "reasonably well matched for the range of frequencies" which is common when discussing antennas. Boyd and I would probably agree "reasonably well matched" means an impedance between 25 to 100 ohms for a 50 ohm system such as aircraft radios. But nothing wrong with making sure everyone else understands what we mean. Forgot about discones, would like to see one of those on a Kolb even more than a log-periodic!
