A good friend of mine here uses a Dodge in very heavy
service and has used Dodge spec synthetic in his 5 spd
and has had two
tranny failure in 150,000 mi (maybe related to not
monitoring levels
well
enough,)
the tranny failure wasn't because of monitoring
the level of oil, the tranny failed because it's a
Dodge.. their junk! i wouldn't own a chrysler product.
those Cummins engines might last 500,000 miles but the
rest of the truck won't. chryslers are notorious for
tranny problems. ..... there are 2 kind of people that
own chrysler products, those that have had tranny
problems and those that will... tim

Jack and others,
This is interesting. I have Klotz oil that is over a
year old and have
not seen
this problem. The bottles are capped.
Klotz recommends 50:1 for their oils. I have always
been a little
hesitant about
the Amsoil 100:1 mix.
i run Amsoil at 100 to 1 in my FireFly. ran my
Firestar (377) at 100 to 1 for 10 years. ran my
Ultrastar (cuyuna) at 100 to 1 before that. ralph, it
works! .... tim
I used Amsoil in my new motorcycle (Honda 4-stroke)
and it turned the
oil dark
brown. I drained it and used fresh Amsoil. It did the
same thing. I
didn't like
this, so a switched to Mobil 1. It doesn't turn dark
like that.
whether 2 or 4 stroke synthetic oil does everything
better than mineral grade-
lubricate,cool,clean...brand name of the oil is
irrelevant. ... tim

i got the maxi lube which i use in all my 2-stroke
tools per my serive
center, i was advised the ratio mix we use is 100:1. i
asked the shop
which
is a major mower/landscaping supply house here in
houston and services
many
of the commercial operations here... about the stihl
statement-use 50:1
ratio and why 100:1 with MAXI-lube then is ok or
suggested. owner said
it is
to cover those who are numerous out there in the
flield that wont use
the
right oil.
jg,
your right, they tell the folks to use 50 to 1
regardless of what kind of oil because some people are
just too thick headed to think.
Amsoil company told me that its the oil that
determines the mixture NOT the engine. if the oil says
use at 50 to 1 then use 50 to 1. if the oil says 100
to 1 then use 100 to 1. ... by the way, the Amsoil
distributor tells me that Amsoil has developed 2
stroke oil that has a mixture of 300 to 1 but its
still in "the pipeline" and no decision has been made
as to whether to sell it or not. .... tim

I thought the purpose of this list was to be a forum for the discussion
of Kolb related issues and not the venue to spew misguided hatred for an
American made product, which, by the way, is well received by many...

do not archive,
Kolbers,
After shooting a couple crappy landing in the Mk-3 today at the airport, I decided
to head over to my friends airstrip near Apollo PA to see if he was home.
My landing there was even crappier (glad I built light and was flying solo or I
might have bent an aluminum gear leg). Since he wasn't home I headed back to
McVille (P-37) and did five more take offs and landings, all pretty decent.
I started the day with 7 gallons in the tanks, put 1.1 hrs on the tach, 8 take
offs and full stop landings and a 20 mile round trip flown at 5500 rpm and 65-70mph.
When I put the bird away I still had 3.5 gallons in the tanks.
Not bad for a 690cc two stroke.
Now if it will just last for 500 hrs. :-)
