--> Kolb-List message posted by: Terry <tkrolfe@usadatanet.net> Ralph, Interesting that you made that post about the Amsoil turning dark in your 4 stroke motorcycle Last year after reading the posts about the benefits of using synthetic oil in the gear reduction box, I decided to try it. It was time for the recommended change and I went looking. I also couldn't find the heavy weight 80-140 recommended by Rotax. Since I am using Amsoil 2 cycle mixing oil I called my supplier and asked if he had the gear oil in that weight and he did. Put the Amsoil in last year and ran it until now. Went to change it a couple of days ago and was shocked to see it come out black. There was black sludge built up on the drain plug and it scared the crap out of me. Had visions of my gear box failing! Strained the oil and checked the sludge for metal and found none. So I decided to try another fresh charge of Amsoil 75-140 gear oil to see what happens. Made a 1-1/2 hr. flight and decided to drain again. In that short time the gear oil turned dark again. Don't know the cause, but I'm not a happy camper, not at 12 dollars a quart!!!! So I went in town and found a blend made by Kendall for $3.65 and put that in for now. Will see in a little while how it does. Meanwhile, I'm taking the Amsoil I drained to my supplier and going to have a discussion! A fellow flier said that he had some Redline gear oil in his and it came out looking new like when he put it in two years before. Anyway, I thought I would share my experience with the Amsoil. Now I'm beginning to question the value of the 2 stroke I'm using! And I have allot of it. Terry - FireFly # 95

... (not processed: message from valid local sender) --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Kelvin Kurkowski" <kkurkow@chase3000.com> Guys, I didn't mean to "spout opinion" just related some lube experiences. Incidentally, my tranny in my ford behind the Cummins is an NV 4500, same as Dodge uses, it came out of a wrecked 96 Dodge. I do have a US Gear two speed box between it and the transfer case, which gives me 10 usable gears plus double overdrive, but does nothing to reduce the load on the tranny. The only reason I mentioned it, because lubrication should be the only difference, comparing two different gearboxes would not have been relevant. My thoughts were that you guys are aviation's innovators, exploring the boundaries with you're little aircraft, but some seem to not be aware of the improvements in lubrication based on innovation in that industry. When we first started researching synthetics, Mobile 1 was the only other option, and I have a friend who had been working as a mechanic on the Alaska pipeline project for a couple of years, and had experience with it on heavy equipment. He said one season, then every lube seal would be leaking, the Mobile 1 was not compatible with rubber seal compound at that time and it would degrade the rubber very quickly. I know they have changed the formulation, and that is much less of a problem today, but that's what started us down this path, and in agriculture, Amsoil had the additional products, to allow us to take advantage of the synthetics in almost every application. I'm not an Amsoil dealer, but we do buy the stuff by the barrel through a fleet/ commercial account, which makes the price much better, and I know price is a big consideration. We have said, if would have had to go back to changing oil in equipment at 100 hours, like we used to, we would have to hire an extra person just for oil changes. Still learning a great deal from you're experiences as you relate them!! Sorry again guys, Kelvin, Grant NE do not archive ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale Sellers" <dsel1@bellsouth.net> Subject: [***SPAM*** Score/Req: 12.30/04.00] Re: Kolb-List: dodge tranny failures ... > --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Dale Sellers" <dsel1@bellsouth.net> > > YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT OPINIONS! > > do not archive > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Ken korenek" <kkorenek@comcast.net> > To: <kolb-list@matronics.com> > Subject: Re: Kolb-List: dodge tranny failures ... > > > > --> Kolb-List message posted by: Ken korenek <kkorenek@comcast.net> > > > > I thought the purpose of this list was to be a forum for the discussion > > of Kolb related issues and not the venue to spew misguided hatred for an > > American made product, which, by the way, is well received by many... > > > > Ken Korenek > > N104KK > > > > artdog1512 wrote: > > > > >--> Kolb-List message posted by: artdog1512 <nazz57@yahoo.com> > > > > > >A good friend of mine here uses a Dodge in very heavy > > >service and has used Dodge spec synthetic in his 5 spd > > >and has had two > > >tranny failure in 150,000 mi (maybe related to not > > >monitoring levels > > >well > > >enough,) > > > > > > the tranny failure wasn't because of monitoring > > >the level of oil, the tranny failed because it's a > > >Dodge.. their junk! i wouldn't own a chrysler product. > > >those Cummins engines might last 500,000 miles but the > > >rest of the truck won't. chryslers are notorious for > > >tranny problems. ..... there are 2 kind of people that > > >own chrysler products, those that have had tranny > > >problems and those that will... tim > > >do not archive > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >__________________________________ > > >http://movies.yahoo.com/showtimes/movie?mid=1808405861 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

--> Kolb-List message posted by: ul15rhb@juno.com Terry and others, Thanks for sharing that story. I too was not satisfied with Amsoil engine oil in the cycle. I do however use Amsoil gear oil in the shaft drive. I have not drained it since last summer and if it's dark, I will switch over to Mobil 1. I have not had any problems with Mobil 1 gear oil (75W-90) in my 447 gearbox as it drains clear after 50 hours of flying (the average time I fly during a year). Klotz synthetic 50:1 in the fuel works well for me. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Richard & Martha Neilsen" <NeilsenRM@comcast.net> John Williamson put one on his Kolbra for a very short time after switching from a Jabaru and then switched to a Rotax 912S. We never heard why. John is at MV right now but maybe when he gets back he will tell us why. I'm not very objective towards 2 strokes. I had three forced landings with my Weedhopper due to 2 stoke issues. Granted I didn't have a EIS computer monitoring the health of that Chotia engine every few milliseconds but why should you HAVE TOO keep that close track of a "aircraft engine" to stay airborne. I also think that Rotax is gouging everyone with their high prices. I would sincerely like to see some other 4 stroke be able to step forward and challenge Rotax and put some competition in the light plane engine market. I have chosen to put a VW on my MKIIIc and I'm very happy with it. Granted it was a very involved installation, its a bit heavy and the reduction drive is a belt drive. On the up side it is relatively cheap, powerful and reliable. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Giovanni Day" <gde01@bellsouth.net> Rick, I have been flying Uls for a year now and have had one engine out. It was a 532 of unknown time and it lost a rod bearing. I figure this is my problem as I should have been more thorough in knowing the history of my motor. This is why I have a new 582 on my new unfinished Kolb at the moment. I would like to put a 4 stroke on it but rotax is very expensive both in initial purchase and repairs. The thing that concerns me about this verner is 2 cylinder only (vibration), no one seems to know much about them, parts availability and weight to power ratio. I will be interested in what john had to say. Giovanni Do Not Archive

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "M. Domenic Perez" <perezmdomenic@plateautel.net> List, Fortunately it was on my preflight inspection while actuating the throttle with the engine off, but the lever broke mostly off. It let go right where it's welded to the flat with the pivot/friction/mount bolt through it. Could have been a problem at just the wrong moment. I had installed a throttle stop (in the form of a piece of angle bolted to the flat) which would contact the longeron to keep the cable from being stretched beyond WOT because it seemed like a bad idea for the cable to take that abuse. This may have altered the "geometry" so that greater stress was put on the lever tube where it was welded to the flat. It broke right where you would expect it to - right where the weld ended. A contributing factor may be my beginners' ham-fistedness. There was absolutely no hint of weakness beforehand, just the failure. There did not appear to be rust on the interior of the tube. I guess I will figure out some kind of reinforcement for this area when I repair it. Can I weld on this with my wire-feed welder, or should I take it to someone with a TIG machine? Or should I just get a new one from Kolb? Naturally, I will pay extra attention to this during future preflights. You may want to look at yours. M. Domenic Perez FS II 503 Vaughn, NM
