Tom,
How does one differentiate between old & new 503's?
Is it the Single Ignition vs Dual?
Or maybe a certain serial number?
Does it include both single carb and dual carbed versions?
Since I'm still having cold starting problems with mine, I may want to take
advantage of this offer. Are you also offering this special?
Thanks in advance,

Hello Kolbers,
As part of my flight test preps I have been going over the archives and found some
interesting stuff.
In '02 Erich Weaver wrote that his 912 oil tank mounting frame had cracked from
vibration. Mine hasn't cracked but I had serious vibration just after lift-off
that could lead to this kind of failure. I was pretty sure that my vibration
was caused by wheels being out of balance or out of round. When I checked them
it took 3.5 Oz of stick-on weights to bring one of them into balance. They were
both reasonably O.K. for roundness. I have had this problem on other planes
and recommend that new wheels be checked before the start of flight testing.
I also saw a post from John H. where he referred to 50 or 60 MPH as slow flight
that makes Ms P'fer "squat" and fly with her nose high. My test runs so far
have been at 40-45 mph (ind.). It's no wonder that she seems to be tail heavy
! Since I have no way to verify my indicated airspeed I will have to rely on ground
observers estimates and try it at higher speeds.

I have been shopping for scales to use in light plane weight and balance. Using
the tail stand, plumb line, steel tape and doubled up bathroom scales to weigh
each wheel after placing the blocks the same height as the scale under the other
two wheels gets really cumbersome. If the object of this effort is to locate
the center of balance wouldn't it be easier to attach a come-along to one
of the overhead beams in my hanger and lift the plane at different points on the
root tube to determine the balance point? Side to side and wing attitude would
have to be resolved but it sounds easier than scrambling around with the scales/blocks/calculator/plumb
etc.? Of course you would not get the aircraft total
weight but that could be done on a truck scale with real accuracy if needed.

Nothing wrong with that idea, if it balances on a point on that tube it
sure has to be the CG. That ought to be pretty close to the engine
front if not right at the engine someplace. The other advantage is the
plane attitude doesn't make much diff here. (now to wait in hopeful
anticipation for response on that point.) Now to find the whale scale....

Hi Guys,
I live in Chattanooga, TN and ready to buy a Kolb Firefly to fly while and after
I get done restoring my Champ. Does any one know if there is a two seat Kolb
owner around these parts ( Nashville, Knoxville , Atlanta, Montgomery ) who
could haul me up for a 20 min, demo ride ? I weigh 230 and more than glad to pay
for it.. The Kolb plant in London KY suggested a gent up in Etowah TN however
I found his is out of service for a while. The wind was too hard for demos
last month at Sun n Fun so I missed that one.
Thank you,

Steve,
Been there done that with a 80CID Evo engine. The thing was awesome and fun
to play with but will never work on a Kolb. There are some photos in the
archives just type in Paul Petty into the matronics search engine. Except
for weight a Harley Davidson engine is a good pick for us motor heads. There
is a guy that has built a Zenith aircraft using a 88CID twin cam "B" engine
and a belt redrive.Go to www.hog-air.com and check it out. I rode Harley
Davidson's for years and gave up the hobby to afford a Kolbra. While I was
waiting for my bikes to sell I mounted a 80CID Evo engine on a test stand
that I had left over from years of building bikes and swapping parts and
wanted to test the torsinal vibration theory on the crankshaft with a prop
attached. It was a lot of fun and the engine with a wood prop sounded like a
stearman with a radial!! However there were certain RPM ranges that it would
make you go blind. The "B" engine has internal counterbalance shafts that
make it run really smooth. A university up north put one on a Wright flyer
and flew great! Thing about these Harley engines is that they have a very
flat torque curve. I have heard more than once that "Horse power sells the
aircraft however torque flies the airplane"
If you would like more info about my experiment contact me off list. I went
the Rotax 912 route mainly because it is a proven engine and Rotax is
constantly evaluating their product and provide customers with "What needs
to be upgraded or fixed from owners out there flying". With a motorcycle
engine and there are some nice ones out there flying I.e. BMW/Honda ect. one
finds him self on his own with very little support.
I would love to fly a Harley Davidson engine! But I'm a motor head... Love
the sound and the "feel" or horsepower.
Perhaps we may install a Twincam88 B in our 1/2 scale P47 razorback
experimental someday and put a HOG in the air!
But for now it's finish the Kolbra and start my next airplane the Hatz
biplane..

I'll bet you'll never get the designer of the plane to agree that that
is an acceptable method to cg test a kolb.
The root tube is not designed to support the total weight of plane and
pilot at the cg.

Super photos! Some day I need to get out there with my airplane.
I see Craig Nelson made it with his streamlined MKIIIX. I didn't see wings
or any flying photos. Do I assume that it was on static display. Craig keep
us informed.

Rick and all:
I did make the trip to monument valley ad was quit satisfied to just sit in the
shade of the trailer and take the grandeur of those ominous shafts of rock propagating
through the desert floor, pushing to the sky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
of course meeting the guys, seeing the aircraft and their unique
interoperation of their individual kits. its great to observe the little things
that make kolbs fun to build and own. of course FLY. that to was fun, to see
the planes against the red rock defying gravity passing ancient bluffs free like
a bird. no i did not have my wings there just wanted to come with a little
piece of the f'in airplane. i have been so inundated wit work moving my dental
laboratory (2 times in the last 24 mo.) and i bought a dental practice so the
extra has taken a back seat. i hope to start the engine next week. don't know
if I'll make Oshkosh this year. Thanks to az Dave for the kolb stickers 4 the
truck and trailer. Ii let j.h. canabulize my planes fuel pump gasket so he
could geet home. well john ya owe me dude. i didn't put the pump back on cus i
felt like if i tightened the nuts on the pump without the washer i wold damage
the pump. well that was the least tof the problem. ya see the dern pump came
off the plane inside the trailer . worked its way to the rear ramp door, with
all the excitment of m.v. and all, burrowed its way through the door and on to
the highway. bounced througha radiater of a folowing hum V. causing steam to
obstruct the drivers vision and he ran into the trailer causing the door to open
and then the f"in air plane bounced out to the on coming trafic, causing fou
fatatilies, one premature birth, a droken index finger and three navaho indian
braves ot drink a quart of fire water. i didn't hav a clue. the trailer is
30 feet long 8' 4" wide and inside is over 8' tall. when i got home the rear
door was only 3' long(it had been ground short by the paved highway) don't worry
bout me i'll be ok.

With a HUGE amount of help from my friends here, we finished the boom tube replacement
last week, but I've been unable to get the plane home due to the horrible
weather (flooding) we've been having here in SE Michigan.
However, I'm happy to report that I got her home last night and put the wings back
on tonight as well as a host of other little chores, safety wiring this and
that, cleaning, and so forth. There's still a few things to do, and of course
a microscopic pre-flight inspection is needed, but I hope to be back in the
air this weekend.
THANK YOU, very much and very sincerely to all those who offered advice and encouragement
during this time. While I wouldn't want to do it again, I learned a
lot and that's a good thing. Now, if we can just get some decent flying weather!
