Subject: Kolb-List: Nut-serts
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Larry Bourne" <biglar@gogittum.com>
A while back there were comments on the List regarding nut-serts.
Recently, I was reminded of that conversation when I was called to work on
a machine in one of the hotel kitchens. A stainless steel panel was held
on with 4 - 6 mm screws driven into nutserts on the frame. 2 of them were
tight, and despite trying to ease them out, they spun, and then the fun
started. Couldn't get at them from behind, and the screws were a hard
grade of stainless, so I had fits trying to drill them out. Ruined several
drill bits, but finally did get them, of course, and now I'm more solidly
convinced than ever that those things will not ever find a place on
anything I build or work on. Lar.

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Hauck" <jhauck@elmore.rr.com>
Good Morning All:
I'll try to finish up something I started a while back before I get
started working on my MKIII and other chores around hauck's holler.
I believe the last picture on the other email was of John Williamson
and his Kolbra getting ready for takeoff out of Bluff Airport, Utah.
This was our last leg into Gouldings and Monument Valley.
Once airborne out of Bluff, Utah, it was only a few minutes until we
saw Monument Valley out on the horizon:

This is what it looked like from my position in the right seat of the
MK III:

Most of the pictures do not share the turbulence we encountered on our
flight, but this one does. I was trying to shoot something on the
ground. When I pushed the shutter release we got his with a big gust
of wind. This is the result:

We made it to MV after flying four days. Weather was beautiful, wind
was anything but cooperating:

Sorry about that folks. I hit the send button by mistake. Hope I did
not hit anyone down range.
Out for a morning flight to see if the monuments are still here from
last year:

They still are:

Canyon de Chelly Nat Monument, Arizona. Kolb pilots get to see a lot
of stuff that normal people can only dream about:

This is the FBO at Gallup, NM. I met an old gentleman behind the
counter inside. As we chatted about where I was coming from and where
I was going, it was discovered that he had taught Waylon La Font and
his father to fly many years ago. These fine folks own and operate
Goulding's Monument Valley Trading Post and Lodge:

Way out there on the horizon is Sandia Peak on the east side of
Albuquerque, NM, standing a little over 10,000 feet high. I am
looking for Double Eagle Airport on the NW side of Albuquerque:

Climbing out of Albuquerque and over the mountains to the east:

It is still a long way to Titus, Alabama, as we fly through the pass
out of Albuquerque:

West Texas farm land:

Out of Love County Airport, Oklahoma, a grass strip south of Ardmore,
we encounter low ceilings and ground fog near the lake. I though of
John Bickham and the weather he encountered on his first day out to MV
and stayed under it:

This big plant was near El Dorado, Arkansas. I had attempted to
contact Richard Harris during my stop at Texarkana, Texas, but
failed. Richard works at a large chemical plant in that area. Was
wondering if that was Richard's plant?

I made it within an hour of Gantt International Airport and decided to
land in a cow pasture near Akron, Alabama, in an old Special Forces
friend's front yard, after buzzing his house and rousting him out. I
had to spend the night there because there was not enough daylight
left to make it home. The next morning it was beautiful, calm, and
cool, low leveling that last hour home:
http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/MV%202004%20Upload/DSCF0414_resize.JPG
We, Miss P'fer and I, have done this many times over the last 12
years. Time to unload the airplane and load the truck for the short
ride home:
http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/MV%202004%20Upload/DSCF0416_resize.JPG
Miss P'fer is bedded down, waiting for the next flight, which happened
to be two days away:
http://home.elmore.rr.com/jhauck/MV%202004%20Upload/DSCF0419_resize.JPG
With less than three weeks away from my anticipated departure date, I
better get off my duff and get busy getting all the stuff done that
needs to be done before I depart for another flight across America,
Canada, and north to Alaska.
Take care,
john h

Kinda handy to watch the storms with. From Snuffy's Skeeter Bottom weedway. Though
floats would probably work tonight.

Hi Kirk and all,
http://weather.noaa.gov/radar/national.html
The site you posted is one of several that I use and have on my Weather
Links page on my website.
http://home.comcast.net/~kolbrapilot/Links2.htm
Several of the links I have customized for KGKY, Arlington, TX but you can
pull up the weather for any airport that has hourly reports.

I noticed that the Kolb engine price list has a 4" prop spacer for the

I don't have a 912 but I'm pretty sure the spacer is there for several
reasons. One is to give more space between the prop hub and the trailing
edge to prevent a prop strike. Another is that moving the prop out just
those 4" cuts down on the noise level. And the third reason is that moving
the prop out a bit allows cleaner air to get to the prop. There's probably
other reasons but that a good start.
