Denny,
I hope to get over to Shreveport on Friday too. I am only a half hour
flight from there so I will be going home in the evenings. My cell phone
is verizon (717)572-2506. I haven't heard much from the local Lancaster
Co. kolbers yet. I guess they are waiting to see what the the Lord's
will is! Proverbs 19:21 ~ Earl

I assume you're cautioning me about my email last night, but it'd sure help
if you left part of it in your reply so we'd know for sure what you mean.
Thanks for your concern - I deleted it.........unread. Also, I'm still
getting an email with an attachment every day from Ulflyer, and he doesn't
respond to emails. I delete those, too. Be careful. Lar.

Don't know what happened to this message on Monday! Hope it goes through this
time. I have
been busy with a family emergency and didn't notice that the message never made
it to the list.
Hope all of you are still planning on attending!

Earl,
Sent an e-mail to the Kolb list on Monday that wasn't posted and therefore haven't
received an
feed back from the group. Tried again today and got it bounced back again.
Will try again,

Hey John H,
Last time you made this flight to the arctic circle and back, uncle Craig and myself
watched you land at Oshkosh. At the time of your arrival you were very
sick with I believe a sinus infection that also had gone into your ears. I'm
sure you have asked your local doctor to give you some antibiotics for the road,
just in case?
Good luck,

Hi Gang:
For those that are interested, here's some flight data I have come up
with for the flight to Barrow, Alaska:
Distance: 4,822 sm (Direct flight is only 3669.5 sm) (Straight line a
lot shorter, but not nearly as fun and interesting)
ETE: 65 hours
Fuel: 321 gal
Not hard to make a pretty good flight out of going and returning home:
9,644 sm
130 hours
642 gal
I hope the flight will be much longer than that though. I also plan
on a flight to Inuvik, North West Territory, Canada, the northernmost
point of the North American Continent in Canada, plus a lot of flying
in the Alaska region to places I did not have a chance to fly to on my
previous two Alaska flights.
The figures, above, are much the same as what I got on the flight to
Barrow, back to Oroville, WA, east to Oshkosh, WI, and south to Titus,
AL.
Wish you all could go with me. I'll take a lot of pictures and try to
keep you updated on the Internet by email.
Take care,
john h

Dan,
Could you elaborate on the wing flapping issue and in what manner you
connected them. Were they folded, on the rest, or removed from the fuselage.

Hi Tim/All:
Yes, I was a sick puppy by the time I arrived OSH.
Started getting sick in Washington State. Pushed from there to OSH.
Was taking antibiotics, antihistamines, motrin, which were not doing
me a whole lot of good. Hope I don't get that way on this flight.
Thanks for the recommendation. I have always had an emergency med kit
made up by my family doc to carry on my longer flights. Will have one
on this flight also.
Time is getting short. Still got a lot of stuff to get done before I
can leave. Since I have no one at home to pay my bills, etc., I have
to try and get all these little details taken care of before I blast
out of here, since I will be gone longer than my normal monthly bill
paying window.
BTW: Did Uncle Craig get the fuel pump gasket that was to be sent
from Ronnie Smith, South Mississippi Lt Acft?
Take care,

Steve,
I guess the best solution would be an electric starter. But on my
Firefly that would make me non compliant with with ultralight regs. Overweight.
To
bad they wont address the REAL safety issues with 254lbs Im not sure I can
even have brakes and be legal. I think they took our request to increase just
a little and turned it into a way to force FAT ultralights to comply and make
a little $$$$$$$ at the same time.

Just wanted to say that I for one appriciate you posting your experimets
with the firefly and taking your time to share. Your info has been a great
help to me even though I havent flown mine yet. There seem to be a lot less
fireflies out there and less advice.
Keep it up,

Jerb,
The top of:
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly56.html
pretty well explains the process that I have gone through to get the FireFly
trimmed for 55 mphi. I don't want to fly much faster with my head out
because it is hard on my neck to fly faster.
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly20.html
shows how much I had to lift the horizontal stabilizer to get the FireFly to
cruise with a neutral elevator.
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly101.html
explains the effect of shifting the thrust line up and down upon elevator
and wing loads.
One just has to try things to see what is better. I have found that I have
trouble deciding what is better. Every time I do something I am too
optimistic and the FireFly flies better on the next flight. Then later I
wonder if this is really the case. That is why I am using the AeroDesign
Propeller Selector software. After any change, I make sure the engine will
max out at 6,000 rpm in level flight, then I make a cruise test run (5,200
rpm) up and down wind at 1,500 feet asl. Then I compute the average speed
and plug it and the current prop pitch setting into the software. Then one
can look at the propeller thrust, hp out and in, and efficiency to decide is
this configuration better than before. If I believe it is, I then make a
half hour plus flight cruising at 5,200 rpm to get a gph check. If the fuel
flow rate decreases as speed remains the same or the fuel flow rate remains
the same and the speed increases, it confirms that yes the last change was a
good one. This process takes a while, but the FireFly has moved from 2.3
gph to just over 2 gph and is flying over ten mph faster at 5,200
rpm.
Part of the problem is that the Victor 1+ has a larger drag profile than the
Rotax 447 and blanks out more of the propeller. There are many other things
that can be done to help the FireFly to pick up a little more speed. But
most of them involve adding weight, and I am close to the 254 pound limit.
I have slowly been removing things to save weight, and moving things on to
me (the radio and gps) so that they do not count as being part of the
FireFly to stay legal. I am going to move the power converters for the
radio and gps off the seat (cheek board) into my vest. It will save 4-5
ounces. I could not do this for a living, but as a retiree I am having great
fun. And I am rambling, so it is a good time to quit. Thanks for asking.

Ellery, springeraviation.net will give you the locations of a few here
on the list. Stay tuned for further entertainment.
BTW in the direction of obscure info, I was affixing all the transfers,
numbers, decals etc. in the past two days and ran into a little difficulty
with the first one: being over-anticipatory, mine were at least a couple
years old and, even tho being kept in cool place, did not want to
peel for application. The first one (an "experimental" strip) I tried
soaking in water...NG. fuggittaboudit. The successsful approach
is to repeatedly swipe the paper backing with a lacquer thinner-
soaked rag until the paper is semi translucent. Peels good and
transfer accomplished. Did the N-numbers the same way.

Ed,
Don't get discouraged. The FireFly was one of the later designs. The
highest serial number I have seen on this list is in the mid 90's. So
surely, there are more than 100 FireFly's in the air. Let's face it, we are
on the bottom of the feeding chain. We have no N number, line men do not
what to fill us up because we are not big spenders at the pump, GA visitors
pass us by because we fly toys, and we have get prior permission to fly into
tower controlled airports, we have to give way to just about everyone and we
have use the dreaded 2 cycle engine.
But, they like to take my hangar rent, invite me to experimental row at the
air shows because it is small and draws a crowd, count my take off and
landings to get federal money. I do not have to fly it out of state to
escape taxes, I can do all my own inspections and make changes without
asking anyones approval. And, I use the taxiways as a runway and by doing
so stay out from under foot and avoid GA queues and runway incursions.
This has to be about the least hassle and the most fun for the flying
dollar. Where can you have this much fun for about $4.00 per hour? If you
throttle it back and hit the thermals, it can cost a lot less.

Well said jack....
Nothing with more bang for the buck than a FireFly I think too!
my bird....cage SN 098 was welded by the old Kolb...and part of the transfer
of inventory in the purchase by TNK....kit then sold by TNK as one of their
first FireFly sales.

Ed, You wrote,
Steve,
I guess the best solution would be an electric starter. But on my
Firefly that would make me non compliant with with ultralight regs.
Overweight.
You have my sympathy and support( I plan to build a firefly next) I think
anything that is a safety device should have a weight allowwance. You know, like
a BRS.

I am leaving from Central NJ Friday morning, stoping at Smoketown to re-fuel.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone. (Has anyone pointed out to John H that
given the distance from AL to AK, PA is not that far out of the way? he he
he.)
As Homer's is 60% of the way home (and Sunday is our anniversary as well as Father's
day) I am continuing on home Saturday.
My cell is 609 462 9499. Any one there on the list, give me a call, or just gather
around the white and red Firefly.
Friday, is anyone planning on flying in together? I am happy to join up with anyone
heading the same way.
Chuck Davis

Terry,
Are there any more detailed plans for the Homer
flight? Who all is leaving from
Smoketown? ~ Earl>>>
i just checked the weather forecast and it looks
kinda "ify" for the coming weekend. cloudy, poor
visibility and 30% chance of rain. what other kind of
weather is there? isn't this the way it always is? i
was gonna fly out of Shoestring up to Shrevesport but
i don't know. everyone's watching the forecast and no
one wants to commit to flying up just yet... the
weather might be good enough for a "get together" but
not so good for VFR UL flight. ... i think this will
be another "fly-in" where most people "drive-in"....
we'll see ............... tim
