I wonder if a shotgun starter could be made that pulls the recoil start
line? The thing is, it could be made quite light weight.
Might not need a shotgun charge, something smaller might work, too. The
basic concept was used before WW II, but of course it would need to be
designed anew for this application.

Jack,
Just wanted to say that I for one appriciate you posting your
experimets
with the firefly and taking your time to share. Your info has been a great
help to me even though I havent flown mine yet. There seem to be a lot less
fireflies out there and less advice.
Keep it up,

I was amazed to learn of a not-so-well publicized, major event this coming
Monday (June 21): The first manned space flight by a private business will
be attempted by the Burt Rutan led Scaled Composites team in Mojave,
California. A rocket ship will be carried to about 50,000 feet under a
bizarre looking plane dubbed "The Wight Knight", then released. The plan
is to then fire the rocket and subsequently coast up to the maximum
altitude of about 62 miles before re-entering the atmosphere, where the
pilot will then fly it as a glider back down to the Mojave airport. The
rocket will not orbit the earth, but will reach space with a man aboard.
The public is invited to go to Mojave and witness the takeoff and landing
up close. You should also be able to see the flare of the rocket when it
fires with the unaided eye and of course much better with binoculars.
check the web site for photos and further details: www.scaled.com
Pretty amazing!

Weather permitting I plan on trailering my Kolb FSKX from Md to
Shreaveport Pa. Fri morn & arrive at Shreveport in the afternoon.
I would like to join you Kolbers flying to Homers. It looks like
about 92 miles one way. I have a 6 Gal. main tank but can strap in my 5 Gal.
aux
tank & squeeze bulb fuel into main tank. I once flew 129 miles non-stop &
still had 3 gal. left.

Dan,
Don't think there are any! They are both private airports. You can try the communication
frequency or we could pick one for our
group.

Terry,
My vote is for 123.45 air to air. It worked well on the Dayton to Kitty
Hawk flight last summer, and there is no way to forget 12345.

PS: maybe use somthing differant in the pattern at Shreeveport?

having a parachute. I heard the FAA was going to take that away. If that is just
a false rumor then I have 7 lbs bonus because my BRS weighs around 17 lbs I
think. Does anyone know for certain if there is still a 24 lb allowance for a
chute on a '' legal" ultralight?

I think you are right but I am sure someone out ther has the numbers. As I
recall that was one of the motivations to add a chute. You also get some extra
weight for floats but it is barely enough to get the job done. I still think
that a remote release tail hook would be cool.

Anyone interested in a new Firefly with 447, heel brakes, Polytone
paint, necessary flight and engine instruments...NEW with engine
break-in time only should contact:
sahebb@webtv.net ask for Ms. Hebb.
Her husband, the builder, recently passed away and the family wishes to
sell the aircraft. It appears to need only some TLC to fly.
Contact Ms. Hebb through the address I've listed or, e-mail me and I'll
pass it on.
I believe the kit was purchased new in 2000 and engine started the
first time and broken in late summer 2003. Some tools and extra
parts/instruments go with the sale.
PS...Thanks again, George...if friends are a measure of a man's wealh,
you and David certainly added to mine.

Subject: | FSII Aft CG problem and a Fix |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "David Paule" <dpaule@frii.com>
To correct an aft center of gravity problem my new-to-me used Firestar II
has, that I haven't flown yet, I'm thinking of sweeping the wings back
between one and two degrees - that's all, not quite as radical as a Boeing
jet.
What this does is shift the Mean Aerodynamic Chord (MAC) back a little bit.
Although this naturally moves the center of gravity aft, relative to the
wings it moves the rest of the plane forward. There's a sufficient net
improvement to justify it.
I figured out how to do this with no structural impact. So physically, it
can be done.
It looks like there's ample prop clearance to allow this. I plan to add a
prop spacer later anyway, when I'm evaluating other propellers. Right now,
this Firestar II has a two blade wood prop.
I figure I'll need spacers for the lower strut fitting, to fill that gap and
absorb the small kick load.
I'm assuming that the reduction in tail volume is something less than 2% and
that this is acceptable.
This probably wouldn't be enough sweep to initiate a tip stall, but if that
happened to show up on flight test, stall strips at the root would correct
it.
Does anyone have any other reasons why I shouldn't do this?
There are a couple of additional characteristics that would very slightly
change the plane in other ways. First, this adds a slight amount of dihedral
effect and a small amount of yaw stability. Second, and of even less
importance, it raises the limiting Mach number by a negligibly small amount.
Thanks!
Dave Paule

There is not a lot of extra prop clearance without a spacer; at least not
enough to do what you are talking about.
I think your net gain as far as cg will be negligible.
My FS II is about average in weight; it flies me OK at 270 lb & it handled a
160 lb pilot ok.
If you are 150 or more, you should be ok if you only run 5 gal,. gas [front
tank only].

I changed my plans and won't be going to the Fathers Day Fly-in at Shreveport.
But, I do plan to make the flight to Homer Kolbs place on Saturday. Possibly
2 other Kolbs might accompany me. Alan Mancus, Original FireStar and Art
Kruysman, KXP.
The weather for Saturday is forecast to be partly cloudy and winds 5 to 10
mph from the west/north west.
