Investigating further showed a slightly scored piston on the PTO side and a leaking base gasket on the mag side. I have 22 hrs on this motor. the clock shows 188. The head temps always would go to 400 degrees full throttle climbing. My exh. temp stays in the 1100-1150 range. My question is, After my engine is warm I always run it WOT on the ground before I taxi out. Could I be getting my engine too hot on the ground. I use Pennzoil at 50/1. I'll be breaking in a rebuilt engine by Thursday. There was a very big turnout with gobs of Shyhawks, Cherokees, a Mooney, a Cub and even a KitFox 5. I was the only UL type there but had a great time. No other aircraft drew the attention that this little ugly FireStar did. It was surrounded by all sorts of folks wanting to know about it. It really amazed me the fascination folks have for these little insignificant flying machines. Kids of all ages wanted to sit in it and get their pictures taken, which of course I accommodated. When I finally left and climbed out in typical Kolb fashion, EVERYONE was looking and pointing at me. or the Kolb rather, wondering how it could do that when all the other planes took so much runway! What a hoot! Thom in Buffalo ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 10:41:46 AM PST US From: "Bob N." He must learn to line up the aircraft and touch down on the runway straight. Touching down misaligned to the direction of travel on pavement can make things exciting and eventful - grass can promote being soppy but at some point he must go back to the pavement to test his skills if he is touching down straight - the question will be answered very quickly. He also needs to learn how he can use the width of the runway to his advantage by approaching a wide runway and slight angle to reduce the cross wind coefficient. jerb At 08:49 AM 6/27/04 -0600, you wrote: >--> Kolb-List message posted by: "David Paule" > >Mr. Pike wrote: >"Go practice on grass. I might have a few of the safety pin types - for the key ring style go to a place like a Ace hardware store where they sell keys - take a Clevis pin with you - you need the size ring that is about 1/2-5/8" in diameter and is like wound wire and not flattened like the larger size key holder rings. Note there a spring steel not the light wire coil used for temporary key tags like you encounter at auto repair centers. Guess what they don't give them away either. This last weekend I got acquainted with just how hard it is to remove them up in the wing fold area on the FireFly when the buyer came to pick it up - better have strong finger nails or a small blade screwdriver. The safety pin types would be easier to remove or install but not as safe. jerb At 07:56 AM 6/25/04 -0600, you wrote: >--> Kolb-List message posted by: "David Paule" > >You can bend one up from music wire, from a hobby shop or hardware store... >but it'll rust eventually. > >I'd look in hobby shops, hardware stores, sewing stores, etc. > >Dave Paule >Boulder, CO > > >"I'm >short one of those little spring safety pins for the wing strut and >control do-hickeys. Their cost should not break the bank. jerb At 08:05 AM 6/26/04 -0600, you wrote: >--> Kolb-List message posted by: "David Paule" > >I am also on a boating email forum and these have been known to come out. >I've had one come out myself and had a turnbuckle come off (not just loosen, >but disconnect. This project has really slowed my progress on my MKIII, but for those of us with lots of water around, we will have a really fun toy. He was going to give it some thought and get back to me. It was one of the first Firestars off the line with a 377. I put less than 200 hours on it and I would guess he put another 200 on it. Its been in an open hangar and hasn't been flown for a year. May need some new fabric, and paint and wing mods. Any idea what it would be worth? If you can't get a grass strip to practice on, spend extra time graduating to high speed taxi. A little extra time early on will help emmensely. Once you have the high speed ground work done, I think you will find the flying a cinch. Steve --------------------------------- ________________________________ Message 19 ____________________________________ Time: 09:50:45 PM PST US From: Richard Pike Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Re: Safety Pin --> Kolb-List message posted by: Richard Pike One problem, one time. Had those pins through the castellated nuts on the rudder cable/rudder pedal AN3 bolt. On the MKIII, that is a strip of flat steel laying against the side of the rudder pedal, and is designed to be easily removed so you can change the position of the rudder pedals - distance relative to the seat. Worked good for several years, were easy to put on/take off. Then one day, taxiing out, noticed that one of them was missing. Had the castellated nut fallen off in flight, I would have lost that side of the rudder. It was there on preflight, but popped off sometime during taxiing. I probably unclipped it by bumping it somehow with my shoe. Went to cotter pins immediately. I would suggest that in any situation where there is any potential at all for bumping them, go to circle clips or cotter pins. In places where there is no likelihood at all of them being so much as bumped, they are OK. I use them on my main spar carrythrough/wing tang clevis pins, they are in a sterile environment inside there. Domenic Perez" Subject: Kolb-List: Safety Pin Bending --> Kolb-List message posted by: "M. Domenic Perez" List, Now that we are on the subject of safety pins, I have a situation that I now think could be potentially very hazardous and am soliciting all your opinions. Twice now I've found the safety pin on my lower left strut slightly bent, as if to indicate that the clevis tried to depart the hole - tried to depart hard enough to bend the safety pin! I have not been in any tall grass that could have somehow caught on it, but I do operate off a fairly rough natural turf field (prairie to be exact, but a relatively smooth patch of it). The first time I found it bent and replaced it, I didn't think that much about it, but now that I've found the same thing has happened to the new safety pin, I've gotten a little spooked. What the dickens could cause enough force to be applied to the clevis in the removal direction that would bend the dang safety pin? If it was my bumpy field, why is it happening to only that location? Could a building error cause something like this? What should I check? I did not build my plane. Frankly, I probably will never fly again with a clevis in this location. I will probably change to bolts for the lower strut attach points. This will be a pain in the you know what. What do you guys think? M. Domenic Perez FS II, 503 bumpy field that's the best I've got near the house here at the ranch near Vaughn, NM I guess this problem and any good answers should go in the archives.
