Hi George/Gang,
Great job with the N.E. fly-in website. I really liked the way you put it
together. Looks like all had a great time. That is a beautiful place that
Homer has. Thanks for sharing.

Members of the Kolb List:
Just completed putting together a web site documenting the June 19th
activities at Homer Kolb's place.
It was a great pleasure to meet Homer, his most gracious wife, Clara, and
the people who came to spend time together.
The very good feelings about the people in the "Kolb family" were certainly
bolstered by meeting some of them face-to-face.
The material can be seen at:
http://kolbflyer.home.att.net
Those of you that were there.....
If I spelled anyone's name wrong or got names and pictures mis-matched, or
anything else that is in error, please feel free to let me know and I will
get it corrected. If any of you have additional material that you would
like to include, please send it along.
Thanks,
George Alexander

graciously took me to the airport and gave me a ride in his MKIII. and whale
there got a photo op in the seat of the university's Wright flyer. I have to
admit I was a little shaken by the ride. as we taxied to the runway all
seemed normal, but as we roared skyward we made an abrupt move across the
runway that put a lump in my throat. Well ----- Uncle craig actually got the
F'in airplane of the deck today July 3 2004, but not without some hair

all is fine until you apply the optional matco brakes. I had the pedals to
close to the front cross bar and as you would put pressure on the toe brake
and enough pressure on the opposite rudder, the rudder torsional bar would
flex enough to cancel any rudder input. we fixed the problem and did 6
passes the length of the runway, and had the extra in the
air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some times it's good to have someone look at
the project that is not so close to it. THIS IS THE DAY I HAVE DREAMED ABOUT

Any of you guys have any ideas as to what to do with a perfectly good

They're in perfect shape, have less than 30 hours on them and are taking
up room in my hangar.
Any suggestions?

I still kind of feel like the ultrastar is the red headed stepchild of the Kolb
family.
would like to find out some basic information. do any of you know when the drag
strut modification was made? and does any one have a building manual the was
printed after this mod was added? I would like to maybe start a web page
with this manual PDF formated so it would be available to the Ultrastar owners
like my self who need it. Still looking for the manual.

Hi Craig/Gang:
I'd like to add my congratulations with the others for another first flight of
a Kolb aircraft.
Glad you got the ground loop problem squared away. Really slows down takeoffs.
:-) How were your landings? Any ground loop tendancies then?
How did she fly?
Any engine temp problems?
Good job!

Hi Gang:
Weather permitting, I will depart Whitefish, MT, for Cranbrook, BC, in the morning.
I will continue to fly in new territory, to me, until I reach Prince George, BC.
At Prince George I will make the decision to fly the Alaska Highway or the
Stewart-Cassiar Highway. Even with a 40 mile dog leg to Stewart, BC/Hyder, Alaska,
it is about 20 miles shorter to Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, via Stewart-Cassiar
Highway. Also a much prettier route through the snow covered mountains
of Western BC. Makes one extremely proud to be able to see and enjoy these
beautiful sights from a little airplane one builds in the basement.
From Watson Lake, YT, to Whitehorse, YT, where I will make another decision to
fly to Dawson City, YT, or go south to Skagway, Haines, Valdez, Anchorage, and
the Kenai Peninsula. There are many wildfires in Alaska and YT creating a smoke
hazard. Visibility is down to 1/4 mile in some areas. Two days ago NOAA
indicated the smoke covered an area the size of Texas, in Alaska and Canada.
I'll just have to play it by ear and make the best of it where ever I am.
Today is Day 9. This has been a leisurely flight. Flew 3 days, then two days
off, then one more day, and another two days off.
When I take off tomorrow morning, I will have all my clothes clean (I am drying
laundry as I type). The airplane is doing great, as is this 65 year pilot.
I sincerely wish everyone of you all could enjoy and experience the beauty and
excitement of this flight. I know I can not bring back what I experienced, but
I'll do my best to have a few pictures and words of what the flight was all
about.
I better get busy or I'll not be ready to get up and get gone in the morning.
This will be my last email or access to a computer to pick up mail for about a
week or more, unless I get lucky.
An old Special Forces buddy of mine had me an Iridium Satelite Telephone waiting
at Tom Kuffel's home when I arrived day before yesterday. I spent the majority
of the day today teaching myself how to operate this new fangled gadget that
will allow me to make telephone calls from anywhere in the world to anywhere
in the world for $1.49 a minute. I do not plan on doing much chit chat on it,
but if I go down and am not covered up in a triple canopy jungle, I can communicate.
It does require a direct line of sight to the satelite. Made a couple
of calls today. This thing functions quickly and makes good commo. With
the sat phone to contact Alaska or Canada Search and Rescue, plus the GPS coordinates
off my GPS, and the ELT broadcasting on 121.5, I should be in pretty good
shape for pickup, if the need arises.
Thanks for all your moral support for my flight. I appreciate it very much.
Take care,
john h

I have been looking at a similar situation of a FSII I am building and will
be trying the following: It will have a fixed gap seal so that I can
waterproof around the mounting brackets, It will be in two pieces, a front
half and a back half that come together and overlap around the brackets and
once installed, will only need to be removed for serious maintenance. There
will be a narrow strip of aluminum for each wing to fit between the gap
seal and the wing which you install and remove when you put the wings off
and on, probably spring loaded to hold it into place. If it works out
easily enough, I will duplicate it for the MKIII, because the gap seal on
that one is a real pain.

Tim,
I bought the little kit for the lexan gap seal for my Mk-2 and I also have a BRS
under there. Everything fits fine and I highly recommend the lexan gap seal
kit for fit and finish. It looks great and gives you even more light in the
cockpit. I'll send you a picture of the installation if you like....just let
me know.

Kolbers,
I have the opportunity to buy a 65 hp Hirth engine for peanuts. And it's NEW!!!!
...still in the shipping carton. My question is this: Is there any reason
anybody can think of that I shouldn't get this engine and install it on my Mk-2?
I'm fairly drewling with anticipation of what a bump of 18 hp would do for
my bird.
