Steve,
The best source I know of for information on Hirth engines is the Yahoo Group below.
I think the bad rap on Hirth engines is way overstated and some of the newer
models are good alternatives to some of the Rotax 2-strokes.

Steve,
The biggest concern I would have is that the Mk-3 was designed for the 65hp
582 because a lot of folks were putting 582s on Mk-2s and Twinstars against
Homers advice and some were experiencing frame cracking.
The Twinstar and Mk-2 were only designed for 503 or smaller engines.
That said, we are now up to putting 100hp 912s on Mk-3s and flying them
around for hundreds of hours at the top of the green arc and into the yellow
arc with no apparent ill effects.
Rick Trader circumnavigated the USA in an overloaded 582 equiped Mk-2, and I
know of at least one original Twinstar that has a 912 installed.
I guess the bottom line is use caution, insure you get her tuned to run real
smooth (jetting - prop - etc), use the extra power carefully, and keep a
close eye for any cracking in the chromemoly.
I'll bet a lot of folks who have big engines on Twinstars could offer you
some advice on where to keep an eye for problems.
Let us know how things go and be careful, your going to have a real climbing
machine!!
Also, Congrats on the Good deal on the engine! I love GOOD DEALS !! :-)
Sincerely,

Tim,
My "solution" can be seen in the photoshare file for March 23, 2003. I
didn't build the MK III, but did install the BRS. My plane lives in a
trailer so the wings get folded after every outing. I really love the
compartment and light storage space incorporated in the gap seal.

Steve,
I second Denny's thoughts and he made a good point about the 912S on the MK
III. I have a MK II and would prefer to have a 582 on it. The 503 with me at
200 lbs and a passenger at 125 plus pounds makes me uncomfortable. I would
like the 582 for the take off and climb improvement and not top end speed. I
would use it conservatively if I had one on it.

This is a real value. Dave was an excellent pilot and builder. This
Mark III was his second Kolb build. He was a Avionics Electronic
Technician Chief and he retired after serving 23 years in the U. S. Coast
Guard. He developed cancer of the brain and died May 3, 2004. Jo
Stroberg is Dave's wife. If you are interested or you know someone that
wants a good deal on a Mark III, give her a call or write her at the
above address. I am sending this message because Jo does not have a
computer and is not familiar with the Kolb list.

Excitement plus!!! Finally got running. Did about one
hour of Taxi testing slow and high speed. Hard to
keep it on the ground just leaps ahead when power is
applied even slowly. More testing to come but Flying
is not far away.
Much thanks to Woody and Andy without their help it
would not have been possible.

Steve,
I would be very careful buying a new old stock motor. Are there any
Service bulletins? How old is the motor? Where and in what condition was
it stored? How are the seals? If you crash your plane or even have an
off field landing due to saving a little cash on the engine, it will
cost you money and time to repair. I would just advise you to ask the
hard questions about the motor and leave no stone unturned. Good luck.

I'd like to thank Richard Swiderski, his wife, daughter, son in law, sister and
brother in law and a boisterous tangle of kids for a tremendously enjoyable evening
last night, near Ocala, Florida. I don't often get to enjoy a close knit
family like theirs, and it was a real treat. (so was dinner - and a huge bowl
of ice cream for desert (-: ) Richard's engine project is coming right along,
looks very good, and almost ready to go - he does beautiful work. I also
fell in love with his SlingShot...............wish now that I'd a built one
of them. S'OK - gotta get the one I've got finished this fall. Tomorrow morning
to see ol' Beauford Tuton, then out onto south Tampa Bay in the boat. What
a trip this is turning into - thunderstorms and all. Lookin' Forward
