Subject: Finding Insurance after an incident?
--> Kolb-List message posted by: BICUM@aol.com Hello List, I'm hoping someone can help me with an insurance question. Many of you know of my "incident". The FAA finished with me and classified it as an "incident - no Action". So now I have been looking for some insurance. Avemco notified me that they would not renew. Called Falcon through EAA and they don't want to even offer a policy. If anyone has experience in this area please contact me. It looks like my Kolb flying days are over. Can't fly out of any airfields around here without insurance. Don't want to really do that anyway. Help! If I am unable to obtain insurance, there is going to be a Mark III Classic w/ 912UL, Warp etc. up for sale. Man that hurts but I can't let her just sit. Contact me off list. Subject: Oil Injection
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Cooley" <johnc@datasync.com> Hi Al, Have you tried opening the oil pump lever arm all the way by hand? This is what Ronnie Smith (South Ms. Light Aircraft) did when they first started my new engine. It will go way farther than what the throttle will actuate it and I guess since its a variable ratio system it is putting a lot more oil in till it gets all the air out of the lines. I know it worked very well on mine and it only took maybe 15 seconds or so and she was smoking like crazy. I also had some premix in the gas. Good luck. Later, John Cooley -----Original Message----- From: owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com]On Behalf Of Al Bumhoffer Subject: Kolb-List: Oil Injection --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Al Bumhoffer" <abum@midmich.net> I have run my low time used 503 DCDI oil injected motor for about 7/10s of an hour now using a 50 to 1 mix in the gas tank just to be safe and not burn a piston. The oil line to the rear carb is filled with oil, but the line to the front carb is not . I can see small spurts coming from the pump but would have expected the line to be filled by now and the engine smoking or fouling plugs due to the extra oil in the gas mixture. I would like to keep the oil injection system but am wondering if I may need a new pump. The motor has only about 3 hrs on it, but sat unused for some years. It runs great with good temps.so far. Any suggestions? Also, thanks for the replies on my gap seal question. Al Bumhoffer, Firestar II,ready for tail feathers Elkton, MI

Beauford is a quiet, serious, easy going kinda guy with a spark of humor in his eye - nothing like his "on List" persona. We had a very pleasant visit during which he and his lovely bride fed me some of the finest home made BBQ I've ever eaten anywhere. He also gave me detailed instructions on the local fishing, which worked well. --> Kolb-List message posted by: dale seitzer <dalemseitzer@yahoo.com> Mark German was a great help after I broke a gear leg on my plane at the Forest Lake MN airport. I met MArk when he had just started building his Kolbra and talked to him later at flyings. I was back taxiing when I saw a plane on short final and figured I better get off the runway--poor choice. The ground is very rough and after several large holes my gear leg broke while on a very slow taxi. Mark let me use his tools, he even drive into town to get a large channel lock. I had some friends at my home airport get a spare gear leg and fly it up to Forest lake and Mark and my friends held the wing up while I removed the old and installed the new. Hats off to Mark. I was able to get home before dark and everything went well. Dale Seitzer __________________________________ http://promotions.yahoo.com/new_mail

--> Kolb-List message posted by: jerb <ulflyer@verizon.net> Which Friday? You'll find the gear works less if you go from the 5" to the 6" wheels - the 6" I got with my FireFly kit were the old metal wheel barrow wheels with the thin Chien tires. The problem I had with them is it took care to drill they accurately for mounting the Azusa expanding brake drum where the drum wouldn't be much off center. Also the bearings they come with are cheeeeap causing some erratic brake grabbing. You can replace the bearings (2 per wheel) with some good Japanese ones, cost around $5-6 per bearing in 1998. You might consider using the 6" Nylon Azusalite wheels - note what diameter axle you have. If I were to do over again I would use the band version of the Azusa brakes rather then the expansion brakes, their lighter and I think they would work better for the application. Using their plastic wheels it might not be as much as a factor although their drums still are not the most perfectly round component but the band float configuration can float to the drum. jerb At 08:48 AM 7/9/04 -0500, you wrote: >--> Kolb-List message posted by: herbgh@juno.com > > >Hi Group > > Traded my flying Zmax for a Firefly project. They've gotta fly from somewhere so they can advise you. Also, you're probably gonna need lessons (highly recommended) and you're gonna have to find an instructor for that. I helped a friend install them on a J3 Kitten and they were really lite. Unfortunately they do not have a mirror image caliper; so one points forward and the other to the rear. Herb

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Beauford" <beauford@tampabay.rr.com> Herb: You will really enjoy the Fly... I started out with the 5 inch wheels, which were one step up from the tiny (and ridiculous) stock 4 inchers... I operate my Firefly off a grass strip in Florida which is prone to occasional light flooding and generally soggy conditions. Did not take long for 'ol Beauford, slow as he is, to figure out that bigger wheels would be a good thing... The 5 inch doobers got me up on the nose twice whilst taxiing cautiously across uneven ground... The 6 inch Azuzas with the narrow tires proved to be just what was needed... They mount tires which are narrower than the 5 inch "fat boys" and yet have proven fully capable of carrying the Fly (with my 205 pound butt aboard) across soggy terrain and up over ruts with no difficulty... I weighed a 6 inch wheel, with narrower tire, and compared it with the 5 inch, with fat tire, to find that they were a dead-even match...no weight penalty for going to the larger diameter... Fer what it's worth, I strongly recommend the 6 inchers, no contest... Good luck... and remember, the nose is the second most sensitive part of the anatomy....protect it... Gonna be overweight anyhow! I >do not want those itty bitty wheels and tires!! > >do not archive > Herb Been flying with the 4 inch Azusa nylon wheels, and they are doing just great. Today marked the 450th take off and landing using these wheels and the Cheng Shin wheel barrow type ribbed tire. Mostly, I fly off of hard surfaces with a long taxi in and out to and from the hangar. Most of my take off and landings are in cross winds, so the tires, at this point, are just about smooth. I believe I can get to 500 take off and landings before replacing the tires. If I was flying off of grass, I believe, they would go much longer. The trick to using small wheels is to be sure that the landing gear is set up properly. The wheels must be parallel to the FireFly central axis and just enough camber so that the wheels tip out a little at the top with you in the plane. This set up gives stable taxi performance, and it minimizes side loads so that the wheels and bearing hold up (145 hours on the wheels, and about 130 hours on the bearings). The lower you can keep the weigh and drag, the better your FireFly will perform. To minimize the risk of small wheels, one needs to three point the FireFly. Plant the tail wheel first and then let the mains come on down. By doing this you can spill off as much speed and retain as much lift as possible before dropping the small wheel into the grass. On take off hold the stick back against the stop and do not let the tail come up. This ensures that you take as much weight off the mains as possible as the FireFly accelerates. It will pop up into ground effect at some where around 25 mph. If you tease the throttle and get it to bouncing, you will find it will start bouncing at a much lower speed. This will let you get up out of tall grass and off rough fields with minimum punishment to the landing gear. This is because the wing is at its highest angle of attack, and as the speed picks up, the wing develops lift, and landing gear load decreases. If one lets the tail come up, the angle of attack goes down, and so does the lift for a given speed. As result, the landing gear loads become much greater. For what it is worth. Jack B. Hart FF004 Jackson, MO Jack & Louise Hart jbhart@ldd.net

    Subject: Re: Firefly owner
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Don Gherardini" <donghe@one-eleven.net> Herb, I have on my fly Carlisle brand 15.00x6.00x6 inch rib tires ..lawn and garden variety...on 6 inch Heggar spun alum rims....with the Posi-stop Heggar hydraulic brakes.. These are pretty fat tires.....which I chose due to the soft conditions of the fields I must fly from and visit in my travels. If I were planning on flying from pavement ...I believe I would choose a tire not quite so fat...probably gain a little airspeed that way . AS far as the aluminum.....well...I guess you could probably double up that 1/4 stock.....maybe weld the edges as a lamination or just add strips for a doubler as you suggest.. I dont really know what the result would be. I used minimum standards that American Honda uses for approvals for OEM applications of Honda powerplants...and I must tell you.....Honda wont approve any engine on 1/4 alum inch mounting above 6 hp....1/4 steel they allow up to 30 hp or 5/16th alum Now...I also admit these standards are based on alot longer time duration than we expect from our little airplanes engines....generally 2500 hour duration standards....but just a couple of hard landings on that 1/4 inch....and I would bet a buck that the inertia of that engine would really strain the mounting plate, so I simply chose a higher standard...the weight penalty I didnt even consider, as I personally believe it was negligable. If Weight was of more concern to me...5/16 would likely be enough....like you....I already had some stock on hand...and mine was 3/8th 2024 so I used it. Don
