The Special(factory built) LSAs can legally be rented out or used for instruction
just like other certificated aircraft. The Experimental(kit built, but not
restricted to 51% rule) LSAs can not be legally rented but can be used for instruction
and check-rides by the owner(s). So, the absence of an S-LSA version
of a particular model aircraft will not be a problem for those either building
or purchasing an E-LSA.

G' Mornin Jack,
Nope...what they make me do is use a portable vibration meter and measure
the vibration on 3 axis's
Their concern of course is for the vibration the engine is submitted
to...and the sending units are attached directly to the engine during this
phase of the approval test. They have no directives on the requirement of an
anti vibe mount...or a solid mount..which many manufacturers use also,
bolting the engines directly to a chassis or a plate, with no isolation.
Basically, I think that , because Hionda engines are extrememly well
balanced, and dont vibrate unto them selves, the choices generally depend
upon in driveline induced vibrations need to be absorbed and dispersed....or
isolated.
I believe, although I am not positive, that the attachment thickness specs
concern is for the torque generated. They likely also consider that in this
industry...sudden stoppages/near stoppages of the driveline can be
encountered with the engine running at peak torque, periods of high
resistance /high torque operation that when encountered is likely to cause
driveline mis-alignment ...and extra loads on pto-shaft bearings and
crankshaft ends and such....as well as crancase stress and attach point
strain.
There is no doubt that these forces are much easily absorbed or dispersed on
a...say...2000 lb ditchwitch with a 24 hp powerplant than a 500 lb airplane
with 40 ponies....we obviously dont have enough mass in our little birds to
stand anywhere near that...so isolation is in fact the only method
available....
What I decided I was more concerned with...was the torque and gyroscopic
loads induced by our type of loads....although I do worry somewhat about
the fatigue factor of alum plate under vibration too....not to mention
observations of cracked aluminum mounting plates on lots of little
airplanes.(not limited to Kolbs).
as fas as the weight penalty of using 5-16ths say vs 1/4 on a engine
mounting plate....well..it is less than a can of soda drank before
takeoff!....just a few ounces. So for me....it was one of very few places on
this Kolb that I choose to enhance the strength of the specified parameters.
Plus.....I knew the ham-handed guy who was gonna be operateing it!
Hows the weather been down their in old Mo?....I was able to get in 2.5
hours yesterday...dodgeing rain clouds but did have a wonderful day!
4 airports.....190 miles.....9 gallons total fuel used.
gonna do it again to day if you will just keep those storms over there with
you!

Herb.....Mine never cracked....sorry if I mislead you.....I didnt use 1/4,
from the get-go I had a 3/8...sculpted and lightened where I though ok to do
so.
I also milled holes underneath it to facilitate the access of a deepwell
socket on a torquewrench to enable me to tighten up the thru-bolts on the
engine....the Cuyuna requires this from time to time...and I didnt want to
need to remove the engine to do it

Don,
Flew to CGI for the Cape Air Show yesterday. Flew down at 1,000 feet agl
and felt like I was almost in the bottoms of small clouds. I stayed until
about 12:30 pm. The clouds were building and they were going to close the
airport at 1 pm, and the earliest I could get away would be after 5 pm. It
was a good thing I left because on the way back to Perryville I got soaked
twice. I got to the field and the FireFly in the hangar before a thunder
bumper came through the airport. Drove through heavy rains on way the
home.
I had an interesting time gaining altitude from the Cape airport. Air and
ground temps had to be about 94-95. With limited radiator cooling capacity,
I have to be careful not to advance the throttle too far and run up the
coolant temperature. At these temps, I am limited to a cruise climb at
about 5,200 rpm. The best I could do was about 50 fpm close to the ground.
I edged over to the Interstate 55 that passes north through Cape Girardeau
to pick up its thermal. I didn't gain much climb rate but it got rid of
periods of sink. I passed through Cape at about 300 agl. When I got north
of Cape things improved as the thermals got stronger and the air cooler as I
climbed, and I was able to cruise at 1,500 agl.
Point to point flew a total of 94 miles on 4.3 gallons and an overall burn
rate of 2.2 gph. It was great fun. I could fly down again to day, but I
usually go for just one day.
You are really pushing your FireFly. 190 miles in 2.5 hours equates to 76
mph overall. With take off an landings, you had to do better than that.
Ground to ground, I am averaging close to 50 mph. With my head sticking out
that is comfortable except when it rains. For the speed you are going your
fuel burn rate is very good. Comparing my 21.9 mpg to your 21.1 mpg shows
what cleaning up a FireFly will do because you are flying 26 mph faster.

Don,
Do you have any specific known cases where the 1/4" thick alum. engine
mounting plate has cracked with the 447 Rotax? I'm concerned your raising
a red flag without any field data to substantiate there is a real problem.

Jack,
I was going to fly my fisher to the show and decided not to due to
weather. I am glad to hear I made a good choice. We will have to get
together some time. I am in Murray KY.

Jack,
that big ole circle I flew yesterday and those stats are a little
misleading....because I had a tailwind about 150 of those 190 miles...I
loitered for about 2 hours at one airport and when I took off...the wind had
shifted and gave me a about a 60 deg tailwind all the way back home...one a
those lucky days...dont think I ever saw more than 65 at cruise on the
ASI...saw 80 on the gps quite a bit.
Today was a different day wind wise...and..... I lowered my needle 1 notch
due because it was loading up on me when I was attempting to accellerate to
take off speed twice yesterday....I wanted a leaner midrange. worked so well
I stuck in a half a turn more pitch on the ivo before I took off.....flew
160 miles on 7.75 gal...in 2:hr 46 min with only 2 stops.
one stop was to wait out a 45 minute toad strangleing rain...so the Fly got
washed....inside and out!
wasnt so lucky on the wind...as it was SSW all day....so the average is more
accurate today than yesterday. Plus..2 less stops and climbouts. I lowered
the throttle a tad also today.....running about 5300 rpms at cruise....so
now....at 2.75 gph in flight....I think I have her right where I want
her...at a 60 to 65 mph cruise (indicated)
My EGT goes up pretty fast on a full power climb....and today what I have
been doing in climbing out to about 600 to 700 agl.....700-800 fpm at
6000rpms....and just as EGT hits about 1250 I level off and back out of it
. Pulled back to 5700 with a 55 mph climb at 150 /200 fpm or so at 1175 to
1200EGT..(cht bumps 300)..I climb up to cool air...2500msl today.....then
level out and back it off to 5350 rpms or so for a 60 to 65 indicated.and
chts go to 275/225 and egt to 1025... gps check says ASI is fairly close.
also.......TOW was 538 lbs with 10 gallons OnBoard and misc junk.,,,we were
real fat!
So truely....I dont think I am flying that much faster than you....maybe 10
or 15 in reality.
Todays fuel burn in mpg was 20.6....and closer to what I think is true due
to the winds.
2 very wonderful days for me this weekend has been.....had a ball!!!!!!

jerry...OK..lemme be specific...
1st...no..I dont know of a FireFly with a 447 and 1/4 inch plate than has
cracked...My fly is the first in this area...and the my first
observations/experience with a fireFly.
2nd....everybody around here that I come into contact with has
FireStars...or twinstars...
and 3 fellas that frequent our local flyin in firestars with 337's have all
told me they crack the mounting plates, make em stronger they said......and
all recommended to me to use minumium 5/16th. One fella showed me what he
claimed to be a motor mount plate for his 377 equipped firestar in his
barn....It looked kinda like a X...which I also didnt like...the shape
itself made me think it would be susceptable to breakage on the
"legs"..(thats where this one was cracked).. between the center and each of
the 4 legs which the lords attach at the ends.
I personally thought rectangular might be a better shape...with less
"spring" in it than the x design would have....now..I dont "know" this....I
just think it. SO..when I got mine.....it never was considered...I made a
rectangle out of the 3/8th I had in stock....then trimmed it back...and even
put 2 cross bars about 1 1/2 wide across the plate between the 2 rear
bolts...and between the 2 front ones...to raise it up a tad...and give it
even less chance to flex with torque.
These guys with the 377 firestars advice..my weedhoppers with 1/4 inch
thick mounts that cracked, soon replaced by a cast mount...my field
expierence with Honda, and my kentucky windage guess..made me do this....and
I would not debate the fact that I certainly could be wrong Jerry....no
doubt about it.
IN fact.....everything I think I know might be wrong.....

I think I will go with a rectangular piece of quarter inch. I can see
that the "X" cut might be prone to flexing . I cannot see that
happening in a full cut piece. I will keep an eye on it. Herb

Hi All:
Arrived Bradley Sky Ranch night before last, after 14 days and 62 hours flight
time. No, I didn't fly all 14 days. I had a couple visits in Idaho and Montana,
plus one weather day at Prince George, BC.
The MKIII and 912ULS have performed impeccably the entire flight. I have been
prone to icing of the idle system, at times, when I do not use the carb heat.
Yes folks, there is ice out there to play with the Bing carbs on 912 series engines
when flown in the right situations.
Am enjoying a few down days to rest up. Have to admit, at 65, I don't have all
that get up and go I had when younger, and I do not rebound quite as quickly.
This flight has, for the most part, been the most spectacular of any in the
20 years I have been cross countrying ultralights. I am amazed at the beautiful
country we live in and that of our Canadian neighbors. I have been treated
quite well by all I come in contact with at the many little and some large airports
I land at. With the exception of Rock Springs, WY, on this trip, and Dublin,
VA, on my first flight to the NE US, I have never had a bad experience
at any airport in the US, Canada, and Alaska (although a big part of the US, it
is another world in its own right).
Tom and Betty Kuffel, despite recovering from some serious injuries, were indeed
superb hosts for this ole country boy from Alabama. They made me feel right
at home. Thanks folks, and hurry up and get well soon.
On my flight from Smithers, BC, to Dease Lake, I was stopped by weather 23 miles
south of the Dease Lake Airport. I had 3,000 ft ceiling and a 4,000 ft pass.
Down in the valley between the mountains, I was easily able to turn the MKIII
180 deg, fly back south down the Stewart-Cassiar Highway (gravel road for the
most part), find a stretch of highway to land on that had a convenient turn
out to spend the night and wait for the weather to lift. Morning came and I
was able to get off the highway and into Dease Lake by late mornining.
Supper is ready down stairs. Will cut this short and try to keep you all updated
when I can.
Take care,
john h
