We moved the floats to a nearby pond and were lucky to find 1200lbs of self moving, self destructive ballast. (teenagers) The floats handled both gross weight and empty weight loads. after which they were subjected a variety of creative impact and twisting loads. Nothing can wring out a landing gear system like a half a dozen wet teenagers. More later Steve Boetto At Chestnut Knowles

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Thom Riddle" <jtriddle@adelphia.net> Jack and others, Verifying TAS by using the average of upwind and downwind GPS groundspeeds is valid. Doing this across the prevailing winds is not valid and will always show a higher average groundspeed than your TAS. The error is due to the cross-wind component and is a function of both the value of the x-wind component and the actual airspeed. The higher the TAS the less this matters and the higher the x-wind component the more it matters. The groundspeed average is equal to the square root of the sum of the squares of the x-wind component and the TAS. GS (XW 2 + TAS 2) .5 So, as long as there is a cross-wind component the average groundspeed will be greater than the TAS. For up and down wind averages, even when you are several degrees off, the x-wind component is so small that it is insignificant. Some folks say you have to do a triangular course to get precise TAS from average GPS groundspeeds and that indeed is another way to do it, but for all practical purposes up and down wind GPS groundspeed averages yield very accurate TAS as long as you hold all the variables as constant as possible. --> Kolb-List message posted by: Terry <tkrolfe@usadatanet.net> Jack, Glad it worked out for you. I have been very pleased with the change and wouldn't go back to the original square tips. As I stated before, so much improvement in sound and performance for so little change! Post pictures when you can, I want to see how you went about it. Did you contour foil the tips as well as cutting them at an angle? How are you going to protect the tips on your IVO? Not an issue with my wood prop. Terry - FireFly #95

I have been here in North Pole going on 5 days now. Getting antsy and ready to go. I got the airplane ready to fly a couple days ago: Cleaned and regapped spark plugs, cleaned fuel filter, changed oil and filter. Yesterday I flew 1.5 hours out over the flats west of North Pole, across the Tanana River. Saw a lot of moose mamas, a few papas, and 4 babies. They are so ugly they are pretty. Had a little wind blowing, but not bad. Ever once in a while I would hit turbulence that would literally knock the crap out of the airplane. When I got home I discovered I had flown through invisible "dust devils". No dust out on the Tanana Flats, therefore the dust devils are invisible. Will certainly get ones attention. If it looks like the fire problem in the Bettles area is going to be with us for a few more days, I will fly south and visit the areas of Alaska I have not had the priviledge to fly in the past, the Kenai Peninsula and areas around the Alaska Range east and southeast of Delta Junction. Then head back up to North Pole and try to make Point Barrow and other points inbetween. Yesterday's high was 85F. This is 10 to 20 degrees hotter than the average for this area. I am wearing shorts and T-shirt, same as Alabama uniform. Impossible for the new Wal*Mart Supercenter to keep AC window units in stock. Normally, ACs do not sell well in Alaska. I am extremely fortunate to have a good friend to stay with here in North Pole. They treat me like family. There are an awful lot of good people left in this old world. Subject: swiveling tailwheel
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Pat Lavigne" <pjl53@hotmail.com> I purchased a swiveling tailwheel from TNK when I was there for transitional training. After I put it on the plane I noticed that it canted to the left. I thought I drilled it wrong, so I took it off and drilled as straight or plumb as I could. Put it back on and the same thing. When I i land the plane goes off to the right into the weeds or whatever, and no amount of left rudder will stop it. (no fun). I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similiar problem. --> Kolb-List message posted by: jhauck@elmore.rr.com Use http://www.onspeed.com/?A=web2mail to transform dial up connections to near broadband speed. Reccomended by Web2Mail Hi All: Will get up early in the morning, load the MKIII, and fly down to Mount McKinley, Talkeetna, Willow, Wassilla, and Palmer, AK. Have a friend to stay with in Palmer, which is a few miles from Anchorage. From here I will be able to make day flights down the Kenai Peninsula to Homer, Seward, Kenai, Soldotna, Anchor Point and other places I have not had the pleasure to fly to. Also plan a flight to Valdez, McCarthy, Gulkana, Eureka Lodge and Skelton's Airstrip, where I spent the night on my flight up here 10 years ago. The airplane is full of 90 octane car gas. That's as high an octane as it gets up here. I think the 912S will operate ok on it. There was also some 100LL in the tank to bring up the octane and I will stop and get some airplane gas at Talkeetna.k Hope the big mountain, Mt McKinley, is clear tomorrow. This is the fourth trip up here and have never seen the highest mountain in the North American Continent. Still hot as blue blazes up here, but worse in Alabama. Take care, john h DO NOT ARCHIVE
