Bob,
Congratulations on the prelim. inspection. You'll be flying that Geo soon and give
us some numbers to think about, I'm sure.
Unless the SP/LSA rule is changed from the proposal, the BFR is alive and well
and will probably be with us forever; in my view not a bad thing. There are an
awful lot of pilots who should be checked out regularly because they don't fly
regularly enough to maintain their skills. Er...mine is due next month.

<Unless the SP/LSA rule is changed from the proposal, the BFR is alive and well.>
I have my private license and plan to fly under the SP/LSA rule so that I can fly
with one less requirement and expense. I also know that one day I will not
pass the 3rd class medical. The concern is that as defined last year the BFR (biannual
flight review) will be specific for a specific group of airplanes. This
could be defined as a particular make and model? I know from personal experience
that getting a BFR in a Kolb can be very difficult. Most local instructors
don't like flying in experimental airplanes and finding one that is proficient
in a Kolb is at best difficult. The SP/LSA rule stated that the CFI must me
checked out in that group of airplane. What is the chance that there will be
a instructor that is checked out and current in your make and model?
I have twice gotten my BFR at Kolb but they didn't have a CFI when I called ahead
to schedule one for last years Kolb home coming. I have since gotten my BFR
in a 172 but I don't think that check ride will cover me flying a Kolb under
the SP/LSA rules? I may be able to grand father in till my next check ride but
then?
I kind of see the wisdom being checked out and current in a Kolb as most GA pilots
even very good GA pilots will not be able to land a Kolb without bending it.
The GA pilot just isn't ready or trained to handle these low energy high drag
airplanes.
What do you guys think? I'm putting together some questions to ask at Oshkosh next
week.

Hoo Boy! two long-awaited events in one day! Pedro, my FAA inspector
came up my driveway and handed me the little pink certificate and then
I check the FAA website to see SP is a reality. Hot doggies.
A little sleeper in the rules....the 1320lb limit increases the number of
old taildraggers eligible. Some airplanes just got a big boost in market
value.
Re: the BFR, I'll get one in a two seater Cessna and that'll have to do.
-After all, if you got one in a Cessna before, it was good for a whole lot
of two-seaters. I don't see quibbling over details whether that's good
for something with a different name on it. There's gonna be a plethora
of different planes in the air now. -BB, do not archive

Rick,
If you need a biannual in the Kolb let me know. I have a Kolb aircraft and
I also have my Instructor ratings in airplanes and helicopters. I agree if
you haven't had experience in a Kolb it can be challenging.

It's a K&N Filter made for Rotax. Actually that filter costs more because
of the lawsuits and the fact that they have to make it special for aircraft
use with provision for safety wire and no metal on it.

When I covered my wings I was not aware that there were caps available so I cut
some circles out of a stick backed aluminum tape and then pinked the edges.
I folded the small ears over the tube and they worked out great. Once the fabric
was in place I was able to shrink it enough over the open tubes so that it
was very flat.
Good luck with the covering. My Mark III was my first covering job and I think
I spent almost as much time covering and painting as I did constructing!

Amen to that, Dick. I've been recovering mine since March and been working
on it fairly steady - with a week off here and there for other work. Just
now finished the covering phase of the wings, flaps, ailerons and tail
feathers. Now on to painting.
Amazing - when I started I was sure it would be done in time for Monument
Valley in May. HA!!! Now I hope it'll be done in time for our Prescott Air
Fair in Oct. Seriously, I'm hoping to have it done around the first week of
Aug. (HA?)

Have a look and tell me if these front guides are welded correctly. I
have no reference to them in the plans or manual. The cables ride on them
at an angle. Looks as if the brackets should have been welded straight ?

Rick, Dave and all licensed Kolb pilots,
I have been waiting for this rule to come out to make myself available as a
CFI.
If you need or want a Flight Review, I will do one in your 2 place Kolb
whenever we are at the same place.
I will be at 3WO on July 24 and at the Kolb Homecoming 24-25 September. My
other locations can be found on my website on my various trips. You will
have to have your pilot logbook with you and let me know in advance that you
want a flight review.

What I meant to show was the right and left Cable guides for the Rudder
and elevator. The brackets are welded at angles to 90 degrees . 10
degrees or so toe out. This causes the cables to try to ride on the rim
of the pulley instead of in the grove. What gives? Herb

The name of that picture Will is "flying into the unknown" and the reason
you like it is because you come from a region of our country where the dominant
view is called "vista". You always have a vista in the land of sun and I from
Ohio am always flying into the unknown. It has a mysterious attribute, and
is quite interesting....and a little ....scarey. Good picture!!

Have a look and tell me if these front guides are welded correctly. I
have no reference to them in the plans or manual. The cables ride on them
at an angle. Looks as if the brackets should have been welded straight ?

This SP/LSA deal was a lot of stuff for the feds to hash out. I think
they made
the best they could out of a situation that couldn't possibly have made
everyone happy.
I found satisfying the point where the snubbed ME's said that the exam
only cost
an average of $85 and was not a burden. Yeah, right.and try to find one
if you live
in east podunk.
Also in there: Therefore, the FAA is revising the final rule under
61.303 to establish that the holder
of a recreational pilot certificate or higher is NOT required to obtain
a make and
model logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor to operate a LSA
while exercising the
privileges of a sport pilot certificate. (sure would have been tough to
do if you owned
the only one of it's kind) -g'nite all, BB do not archive

Hello to all
Just got back to Orlando, It is 1:30am
This is the first chance I have had to get a real connection in days.
Thank you Paul for posting the pictures. Norm Labhardt is the pilot in the
firstshot and Bryan Melborne is in the second, can you imagine two better test
pilots.I only have 3 days to clear my desk here and then I head for Osh.
The plan is to ship the new MKIIx with the floats attached to the show. It
should be flying there. Its hard to believe but the picture posted in flight is
really the wheels retracted. The test flying is not done yet because of time to
show constraints but we are seeing speeds in excess of 90 mph at 5500 rpm.
all for now
