You are correct, the drag goes up with the number of blades.

Hello John,
Just wanted to add my thanks for all the wonderful pictures of your Alaska

Morning Monte/All:
My pleasure. Makes my day if I know some of you appreciate and enjoy
the pictures.
It is unfortunate that these flights are all made solo. Impossible to
bring back in film and story what the flights are really like.

Kolbers,
I mounted a third blade on the propeller, and I got another one db reduction
in noise. I took some clean air data yesterday, and it looks pretty good.
If you are interested, you can read some more about it
at:

It really changed the sound characteristics.

Morning Gang:
As usual, I made a few mistakes posting pics last night.
Here are the corrections:
| Finally, the weather lifted, some road gang gals brought me 26
liters
| of 87 octane fuel, and I headed for Dease Lake. I refueled here
three
| years ago on my way south.
|
| Some of the lakes are quite striking:

Should be:

| I messed around and did not get around to pulling out the pack stove
| and boiling some water for coffee. By the time I was about half way
| between Dease Lake and Watson Lake, I acquired a terrific "hang
over"
| type head ache. I was experiencing caffeine withdrawal. Didn't
think
| I was going to make it to Watson Lake. It was rough and it got
| hotter. The air was filled with smoke from the forrest fires and my
| head hurt. When I got to Watson Lake, I immediately taxied over to
| the camping area and started boiling water for coffee. After four
big
| cups of Folgers coffee bag strong coffee, my headache started
| subsiding. Thank God!

Bob/All:
Thanks, my friend.
I sprung for a Fujifilm S-7000 last March. Was a good choice. All
these pics were shot on "automatic mode".
Of course, there were a lot of pics that did not come out good enough
to share. The digital gives me the option to take a lot of pics that
I would not ordinarily take with the film camera. If the shot doesn't
work, delete and make room for another shot.
Take care

I hit a hawk a couple of years ago climbing out in a left bank. It put a dent in
the last rib on the left wing and caved the fabric in about an inch. I held
right rudder to compensate for the drag on that side. The windshield vibrated
a little more than usuual. It flew 36 miles until I got home.

John,
Seems that my FS is on the slow side. I have the Powerfin pitched to 6100
static (I think). I like to crusie at 5200-5500 rpm and that nets me just
under or right at 60 mph. Never really wanted to go much faster though.
Speed will be the theme of the next project....whatever that will be.

Concorde was built quite close to my home and I know that one of the test
rigs threw frozen chickens into the air intakes.
I suppose if you hit a chicken at 40,000 ft it is likely to be frozen!

Hi All,
seems to me that this chat about windmilling props is very interesting but
not really applicable to our machines.
I think it unlikely that it would be possible to drive our gear trains from
the prop back through the engine to get it to fire. In any case as a rule in
a forced landing situation you will be more interested in extending your
glide than shortening it.
If your engine has died SWITCH IT OFF. if you dont as sure as the Lord made
little green apples it will fire up again for ten seconds just as you get
your approach sorted.
Cheers

I know of a couple of guys that actually have belt drive reduction units.
One guy lost a belt and sure as little green apples, the prop windmilled.

Casually mention to her that you think it
might be nice to spend your anniversary

Gee, maybe you could find a motel way

I got my first excitement this afternoon. I had flown a little pattern
this morning,
went home for lunch, took a nap, bought some gas and headed back to the
airport. After a shorter warmup period than usual I taxied down to the
end of
strip, an abbreviated runup and I was off. Since the wind was more
from the
north today that's the way I turned to make it a right hand pattern.
I came back on the power a bit and it apparently suffered from a carb
ice
problem right then. hmmmm, not good methinks. Further power settings
resulted in rpms changing in ways not connected to the little lever.
-surging and whatnot. I decided a precautionary landing in a field was
better than the woods over near the strip. ahh, the wheat field it is.
Right into the wind. Sure glad that farmer uses his rock picker.
Shutting it down, I looked it over pretty good, nothing had fell off.
I gave the fuel press reg. one click up and started it up. Business as
usual. After a lengthy runup (this time), and glance over at some
curiosity
seekers in a pickup on the road, I went for it. Long stubble and lotsa
weeds had me in a bad place until I crested a small rise and voila!
the upcoming fencerow was below me. This time I left it at full
throttle
and picked the smoothest terrain back home. No problem returning
but it sure was made up of the briefest route possible.
Parked in front of the hangar, I pulled off about a bushel of clingy
weeds
from the lower stabilizer wires and pushed it in to bed. Not a scratch.
I guess that induction system might be a little cold-blooded. A carb
heat
system may be in the works. -and a little longer warmup period.

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Hauck" <jhauck@elmore.rr.com>
Hi Folks:
Got the Maule Tundra Tail Wheel installed last night early enough to
do a test flight. Undoubtedly, I made it without crashing tail first
into Mother Earth.
It is a good feeling when you change, update, fix, improve, or
whatever, test fly it and it performs much better than expected.
The first thing I noticed when I started to taxi out for take off at
my semi-rough grass strip was the great difference between the 8"
pneumatic tail wheel and the 6" solid tail wheel. Even at the
recommended 45 psi in the tail wheel tire, it was smooth and did not
transmit all the little and big bumps and jars to the airframe.
BTW: Here is what it looked like after I landed at 08A, Wetumpka
Airport late this evening:

kolb drivers, today being absolutely perfect, I had no excuse to not
aviate
a little. I'll most likely set a record for the longest test period, 50
hours being
an average year for me. Today I started the transition phase from
concentrating
on getting back down in one piece to actually observing how the airplane
flies. Pitch is fine. Right turns are ok. Left turns require a
little more armstrong
than is enjoyable to come back out of. Like John H. says, the rudder
don't
do squat. Since stick pressure seems close to neutral at straight and
level
I question whether a trim tab would be helpful. I'm seriously
considering
Richard Pike's power steering fix. I'm a really lazy guy and don't
like having
to push on the controls. Suggestions are welcome with the exception of
"Bean, park that thing!, take up a new hobby"
