John and all,
I will be passing over Rockwood enroute to TNK but I will not be leaving MMI
until about 3 PM . Your departure time from 08A should have you at RKW
around noon (or sooner with those darn 912Ss). I look forward to seeing
everyone this year at Homecoming 2004.

HI John, The Maule tailwheel looks great! Is it full swiveling? Also it looks
like you have shortened your spring tube which it attaches to? Was the set up
very expensive?
Also put me down as another who appreciates the photos and info on your
flight.

John H and other early FireStar fliers,
Just curious what TAS you guys fly/flew your 377 powered FS's. If I'm in a hurry
I typically fly at 5,000 rpm which produces 65 mph IAS which is 60 mph TAS.
It can fly a good bit faster but it is uncomfortably loud and thirsty. I average
2.2 gph at this cruise speed.

Bob, if you want power steering, you need a FireStar which has power steering as
standard equipment. It is a two baby finger steering machine and the rudder
really works. But that 377 is a gas hog at 2.2gph compared to your 2 gph :-)

No George, his head will be on a stick before the mornings over, to
coincidental. Better to use the approach of going some where different and
same time look for a faster two place traveling airplane. One there maybe
get involved with the other folks and there wives and might turn her into
wanting to go each year. Might open the door for short trip here and there
in the future, women like to travel.

Bob, what you need is an atuo pilot - one can be purchased at most sporting
goods stores, hardware, or home building center. You will usually find
them in the section that has rope and sraps. Look for things called bungee
cords, the one with the cloth covering work very well. Pick a moderate
diameter unit and install it with a wrap or two around the control stick
and while under moderate tension secure each end to the cage structure with
strong ti-wraps or hose clamps. In flight slide it around the stick so one
side puts more tension on the stick than the other to keep the plane in
level flight - works to over come a slightly heavey wing or stick pressure
allowing you to take your hand of the stick to open your water, fold the
mao or what ever.

Hi Thom/All:
I had one of the first 447 powered original FS's. In fact, Homer
would not sell me a 447 with the kit, but shipped the 377 which I had
to horse trade with Gerry Olenik, Green Sky, for the 447.
Normal cruise rpm for the 447 was 5,800 rpm. Seemed this was the
speed the engine and airplane wanted to fly. My FS was heavy,
especially when loaded up for long cross country flights. I typically
flew around 70 mph indicated. In order to get a more accurate cruise
speed, I would have to dig out the old log books and see what I have
entered in them.
I found that my Cuyuna, the 447, and the 582, all ran well at 5,800
and 6,000 rpm. Anything much slower, in the older 2 strokes, and it
would be getting into the area of "the pipe", about 5,300 to 5,500
rpm. In that area it would not settle down. RPM would wander up and
down as it "got up on and off the pipe".
Fuel burn on the 447 at 5,800 was 3.5 gph. The 582 at 5,800 rpm was 5
to 5.5 gph.
Two stroke information is quickly fading for me. I flew my last 2
stroke Sep 1993, in my MKIII.
Take care,
john h

Kolb airplanes so hide em for the next couple of days, Better yet, maybe some of
you guys in Ohio can flaunt yours and try to throw Frances off.

Kip... we need to talk, Son.....
Diamonds....? DIAMONDS...?? Only time a man needs diamonds oughta be
when he is looking to drill a hole in something REAL hard.... Are you new
at this...? You couldn't have been married long enough to have worked
yourself into this big of a mess already... Diamonds...??? Sounds like
you need a copy of Beauford's modified list of celebratory anniversary
commodities...
Fer example... Beauford and the Formidable Mrs. Beauford celebrated number
39 here about a month back... on MY list, 39 works out to "plywood"...
It was a no brainer... and it has sure come in handy with all this hurricane
fun we seem to be having around here lately... She acted a little funny fer
the first day or so, but she seemed to snap right out of it after a bit...
come to think of it, I did notice that the coffee tasted a tad strange fer a
day or two after the big day... but she's Jake with it now... and we're
almost through that stack of wood already...
Now NEXT year is gonna be a little tougher... 40 is a biggie... "asphalt" on
the Beauford list.... I haven't quite figured out how I'm gonna pull that
one off just yet...mebbe widen the driveway....mebbe build a sculpture, or
birdbath for her out front... she loves art... gotta check and see what
kind of paint will stick to that stuff...
Anyway... Spent most of the day yesterday out at the airfield with the Kolb
trailer throwing one of those mobile home steel straps over the top of it...
put one of those 4 foot auger anchors in the ground on each end of it...
Not sure that will make any real difference, but it makes me feel better to
be doing something... the 4 corners of the chassis were already anchored
pretty well... Got the Fly strapped down six ways to Sunday inside the
trailer... This thing is supposed to track just north of Tampa, which will
put us on the best (weakest) side of it...probably lots of rain here, but
winds should stay below hurricane strength... hoping for way less than that
20 miles south down at the airstrip...
Could not help but be struck with the large numbers of poorly tied down
airplanes all over the Manatee airport... Only one in three has any earnest
looking ropes on it... many have very lightweight or deteriorated looking
ones...
I asked the airport manager about this and he said that the problem lies in
legal liability... if a person adjusts or changes the tiedowns on someone
else's airplane, even to add to or improve them, that person theoretically
becomes subject to incur liability for whatever happens to that airplane in
the storm... Their legal advisor told 'em to leave the ropes alone...
As a result, the airport guys won't much touch 'em... I hate that kind of
thinking, but I guess I understand where they are coming from... The problem
is that if the worst happens, poorly secured airplanes will be tossed all
over the place, tearing up the ones which have been tied down properly...
Ya gotta wonder where responsibility ends and liability begins... On
balance, I'm glad mine is alone in an ugly trailer...
They have already had a run of bad luck down there at Manatee this week...
The A & P Mechanic shop and the FBO office burned out on Wednesday evening
... one Cherokee in the shop and all the shop tools and equipment a total
loss... they were lucky... lots of nice airplanes in the remainder of that
T-hangar building... they saved 'em all... and now a hurricane while they
are trying to clean up and salvage the FBO records...
Good luck to all the Kolbers over in the storm's direct path... will be
thinking about you folks...

John, I want to take photos from my Kolb too. I'm so impressed with your
photos, I wonder if you would answer a couple more questions? Did you get
the aux power pack or do you just use the 4 rechargeable batteries? How
much memory does your camera have? How many pictures is it good for? Any
other suggestions you have about that camera?

Amazing pictures, John H !
Seeing at all that wilderness, river valleys and the glaciers that you flew
over, without ANY trace of suitable landing sites, was giving me sweaty
palms just sitting here in my comfy chair looking at the pictures on my
computer! Beautiful sights. As you said, this type of flying demands that
you have a reliable engine. Your trip chould be used as an advertisement
for the reliability and durability of the Rotax-912.
Those photos could likely be the only chance I'll ever get to see such
fantastic scenery looking out the windshield of a Kolb. Thanks for sharing
'em with us!

| | Bob Griffin
Hi Bob G/:
The Maule Tundra Tailwheel is full swiveling. It is very positive and
breaks easily when it is supposed to. Amazing how much better the old
MKIII handles and taxis now, compared to the Maule 6" solid and 8"
older type pneumatic tailwheels. The swivel is mounted on a pair of
tapered roller bearings with a friction dampner to prevent shimmy on
pavement. It works great!
I have been shortening the tailwheel strut for years. I feel the long
standard struts are vulnerable to bending and failure. They ae also
apt to get into the rudder on extra hard tailwheel landings. I do not
have the measurements of the length I use on my airplane, but it is
about 5 or 6 inches of tube exposed from the end of the strut socket.
I use .120" 4130 heat treated to 48 RC. Mine was attached with two
3/16 bolts, but over the last 2,200+ hours and overe 5,500 T/O's and
landings, the bolt holes had wallowed out a bit causing the wheel to
lean a little off vertical. I drilled these holes out to 1/4.
Richard Pike, it was a job, touch and go, but I got the heat treated
strut drilled out without screwing it up. I spent $21.00 on some new
cobalt bits stepped up from 3/16 to 1/4 and a lot of cutting oil.
The tailwheel was a good buy compared to the equivalent Scott. About
$500.00 less:

turns out much better than initially anticipated!!!

I followed Richard's advice and will never go back to the original set up.
The difference is so convincing you have to wonder why it isn't included in
the latest design.

| Did you get
| the aux power pack or do you just use the 4 rechargeable batteries?
How
| much memory does your camera have? How many pictures is it good
for? Any
| other suggestions you have about that camera?
Hi Bob/All:
The Fujifilm S7000 uses 4 AA bats. In a pinch I stuck the 4 spare
AA's in the camera while flying. They lasted for an extremely short
period of time. OK in an emergency, but would cost an arm and leg to
shoot pics that way.
I bought two sets of Hitech Ni-Mh Batteries rated at MH-2200. A 12VDC
and 110VAC charger came with the kit. Cost was about $30.00. These
batteries last for a long time.
I bought two 512mb cards for the camera. These worked good and give
me 339 6 mega pixel shots. That results in a 1.5 to 1.7 mb photo.
During the Alaska flight I uploaded to friend's computers and burned
CD's. The system worked well. Beat purchasing a laptop and lugging
it around in the airplane. Would have been something else to take
care of. I try to keep my job as simple as possible by keeping my
work load down on long flights.
The only down side of the camera was dust. I got dust in behind the
lense tower. I still have to get this problem worked out with Fuji,
but it has not seemed to reduce the quality of the pictures.
This camera ended up costing about $425.00. The next step up is about
twice that, but has image stabilization. This would be great to have
this capability. I flew Jim Helmericks on a snow goose aerial survey
in the oil fields. Jim has a Sony SLR digital with image
stabilization. Results were even better than mine, especially when
using telephoto.
Take care,
john h

Greetings,
Well, after much thought, I decided the most logical decision was to get a
912S. Mind you this isn't just any 912S, but in fact, the one that's bolted
to Bill Woods old plane :-)
Yes, I'm buying Bill's old plane, and should be able to go get it next
weekend. As much as I'd rather build, I just can't ignore the fact that
I'll be saving well over $10 by buying this plane. It's also clear that my
RV-3 will keep me busy for the rest of my life, so I'll never run out of
things to tinker with.
Cheers,
Rusty (kit order cancelled)

Hey John,
Is there still a fly-in at Geneva? If so, when is it? I wonder if I could
get weathered in there twice :-) I still think that may have been the best
catfish I've every eaten.
Cheers,

Subject: | Windmilling Prop |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "David L. Bigelow" <dlbigelow@verizon.net>
I believe if you have enough airspeed, a gearbox equipped Rotax will probably windmill.
I have a number of hours in a DG-400 sailplane. It's equipped with a retractable
Rotax 503 engine with a 2:1 reduction belt drive. Normal speed range is from
about 45 to 110. When you shut the engine down (55 mph or so), the prop continues
to windmill, and you must use a brake to stop the prop in a vertical
position so the engine can be retracted. When you extend the engine, the prop
will start windmilling again above 60 mph or so.
Most of us are flying with 2.58:1 reduction (or greater) gear boxes, so would probably
have to be near red line to get the prop to windmill. I'm pretty sure
a manual pull start of the engine at 50 mph is considerably easier than static
on the ground. I'll check it out when I get my FS 2 in the air.

Dave B/All:
Don't think it will windmill, at least mine wouldn't on the original
FS with two blade wood Culver 66X32 in a 90 mph vertical dive.
The 582 wouldn't windmill, neither will the 912, and for sure, the
10.5 to 1 compression in the 912ULS won't let it windmill either.
Maybe stuck rings on both cylinders or pull the spark plugs out and
she will wind mill, maybe.
Take care,
john h
