Bryan,
My 60" IVO is set at about 40" pitch (12 degrees at tip). It probably does not
climb as well as yours but it cruises quietly and cheaply. It weighs 337lb. empty
and my usual take-off weight with me and 10 gallons of fuel is close to 600lb.

I had occasion to trailer my fuselage to a repair facility last spring. I
was following the trailer and able to witness the windmilling, such as it
was. We weren't traveling that fast because of the road conditions, probably
no more than 30-35mph max. When we got to around 30, the prop would start to
"quiver" and would eventually work it's way over the "hump" of the
compression and move to the next cycle. This would repeat slowly. However,
at no time did the prop spin freely, nor can I imagine it would, even at
higher speeds. This was a 503 engine by the way.

retractable Rotax 503 engine with a 2:1 reduction belt drive. Normal speed
range is from about 45 to 110. When you shut the engine down (55 mph or
so), the prop continues to windmill, and you must use a brake to stop the
prop in a vertical position so the engine can be retracted. When you extend
the engine, the prop will start windmilling again above 60 mph or so.

would probably have to be near red line to get the prop to windmill. I'm
pretty sure a manual pull start of the engine at 50 mph is considerably
easier than static on the ground. I'll check it out when I get my FS 2 in
the air.

G'mornin all, Here's some numbers from the prop selector calc.
It was a big help in setting up for initial flight. I have it set on
the
fine side and will most likely coarsen it up later.
Currently at 2035 prop rpm (throttled back considerable)
I can maintain level flight at 1200 msl @ 60mph with only
143 lbs thrust which calcs out to 31 hp !!!
I was concerned that this plane might need near 200 lbs
to accomplish the same thing. Happily, there's a big cushion.
The calculator shows I can add one more degree pitch without
much change in climb thrust but I'll try half a degree first.

Interesting that you bring this up because I tried it about two weeks ago.
MKIII, 582, 2.58:1 B box, 2 blade 68" Ivoprop.
At 60 mph in a descent, went to idle, shut off the engine and adjusted
descent angle to maintain 60 mph. The prop took about four or five seconds
to slow down and stop but it definitely did stop.
Lowered the nose and increased airspeed to 80 and the prop would slowly
turn from one compression point to another but it would not windmill and
never got anywhere close to anything that would restart the engine.
Would have tried it at 90, but there was enough turbulence to make that unwise.
A three blade prop or a different reduction ratio could possibly change the
results.
One way to get a prop to windmill would be to go from dual to single
ignition and put a dirt bike compression release in one of the spark plug
holes of each cylinder. Pulling the release would allow the engine to
windmill and it could be restarted that way. That's probably not a way I
would choose, but it would work.

I bought my FS 1 with a Key west regulator already installed. I'm wanting to put
a Rotax tach in and dump the tiny tach. I noticed all of the output wires from
the engine are going to the input side of the reg. I have a single strobe,
Hobbs meter and a Icom radio running off the planes electrical sys. Is all the
output wires necessary? That's seems to be allot of power going to the regulator
that couldn't be used. Can this setup damage the regulator? Do not archive.

Anybody out there have a set of wings off a FS ll or mark ll, lll for sale. I have
a friend that wants to put a set of Kolb wings on his Preceptor pup. He's
looking for more climb. He's at about 250' per min. with a half VW and won't change
the engine to a more powerful 2 stroke. Do not archive.

Dan,
Let me know what the results are. I just have a feeling he's not going to
gain much. Having had flown our shorter wing FireFly and have flown my
hangar partners N3-Pup with the 2 cylinder Global (1/2-VW like), I just
don't think he's going to get the performance he thinks he will. He must
be a shinny guy, if we got 150 ft/m climb we were getting into nose bleed
territory. Now if your were to put on say a 377 or 447, or even better a
503, then you should see some worth while performance increase. The
engine I thought that would have been just perfect for the N3 was the
Thunderchief that Larry Israel was developing that involved conversion of a
Citroen 4-stroke 2-cylinder engine to reduction drive unit with electric
start & alternator. To bad he and his partner could not agree with each
other to finish the project.

If he's determined to keep the 1/2 VW, he would be better off to forget the
Kolb wings and try nitrous oxide, that's about the only way he'll get any
more climb performance out of a 1/2 VW...

Dan,
I had very little load on my Key West regulator, which caused it to burn
out, and it burned out my lighting coil in the Rotax 277 as well.
This is a shunt-type regulator that draws a lot of current in order to pull
down the voltage. It does not do well with a light load. I suggest you add
a dummy load, or use a different type of regulator.

Agreed. A very nice picture.
In case the dimensions given before

also 640 x 480 pixels. YMMV.

Hi Mike/All:
Right click on the picture and click on properties. I think it is a
640 X 480, 61kb.
I usually do mine 800 X600, and they come out about 100 to 150kb.
That one came out good though. Looks tough!!!

Ken,
I wonder if they would fit a firefly. Just thinking out loud. They probably
weigh just enough to make the total weight over 254, then I would have to
worry about the sport pilot thingy.
