When I moved to Buffalo, NY from Atlanta after retiring, folks up here in the great
white north questioned my sanity because most of them think that Florida
is Nirvana. I know better having suffered a direct hit from a tornado in Atlanta
several years ago. We get a steady but manageable wind off Lake Erie and the
snow is predictable and manageable as well. Tornadoes, hurricanes, earth quakes
are not manageable. I cringe for you guys this time of year.
Ask me again in January how much I like it here :-).

Here's a great site extracted from aeronews.net.
Looks like the Kolb wing has some serious competition.
About 20 years ago I wanted to install a wind generator similar
to this design at the top of the hill behind my house.
-Would have been a lot more efficient, especially at low windspeeds
than the big propeller mills. I settled for a watersource heat pump.

Giovanni Day et al,
One of the procedures used by the FAA accident investigators is a controls continuity
check. It has occurred to me that it might be prudent to do this before
the accident. This procedure is where they look at each component of a given
control system. I.E.: the aileron control system, starting with the stick and
going item-by-item through the joints at the base of the stick to the push rod
ends, control arm ends etc and concluding with the precise movement of the
aileron surface. In our simple planes the whole job includes throttle, elevator,
rudder, ailerons, flaps etc. The objective is to make sure every connection
is bolted, welded, pined or otherwise linked together by a positive mechanically
connection. I always do this before I make my first flight tests. I will not
elaborate but this has saved my bacon. It is the exact opposite of "kicking
tires, lighting the fire and seeing what this baby can do" (R.I.P).

My question now is what will they do when they run out of hurricane names when
they get to Zelda? Will they use numbers or start again with Albert?

Aloha John,
Thanks so much for posting the pix. Like all of the other Kolbers I
have been checking them out and enjoying them very much. They are way
too good to be posted one by one.
We need to find a way that folks can browse through them. There are
very simple web generation programs that will produce one or more index
pages which will display thumbnails and link to the larger images. Once
the site is automatically generated then one can upload it to the free
space provided by most ISPs.
Another route would be to upload them to one of the free gallery sites.
There you can create galleries for each segment of the trip. My
favorite is pBase. They will give you quite a bit of free bandwidth and
if you need more it starts at $20 per year.
I have no affiliation with pBase other than hosting a few of my own
photos there. Check it out 'cause I need to see more of your trip ;-)

John, I happened to be at the desk this morning and was able to "listen in"
on your interview. Very nice job, almost as good as your flying pictures.
hehe Great "plugs" for the Kolb design and for the aircrafts ability to
"travel" with a bit of common sense in the cockpit.
I have really enjoyed your pics, and keep telling myself that I will see
some of that scenery myself someday.
Thanks again for taking us all along.

Hi Bill G/Gang:
Glad you enjoyED the pics. Sorry I do not have a nice web page to
display all this stuff, but it is in the mill as I type. George
Alexander has been after me for years to do a web site to share my 20
years of flying Kolb aircraft. I finally got around to deciding this
would be a good idea. For the computer challenged, like myself,
anything that has to do with pictures, web pages, etc., is extremely
time consuming. George is in the process of relocating to Florida.
He has graciously offered to do a web page for me. I am extremely
grateful for his generous offer.
The world did not stop the 48 days I was away from hauck's holler, and
it is still hauling buggy as I type. I live alone, therefore have all
the chores to do, both inside and outside. After airplanes and dirt
bikes, there isn't much time for running the vacuum, much less sitting
at the computer all day playing with pictures.
I'll try to do better as soon as I get a raise (been living off Army
retirement for 24 years).

Ocala escaped another direct blow, but took a battering none the
less. Still no electricity (estimates are it will be another week), but
phone came on tonite. Propane RV refrig & generator is keeping things
tolerable. George made it to FL with his FS on an open trailer from OH,
came right thru the last of Francis. His trailer was on one wheel during
the gusts. I say if he was a real Kolb pilot, he would of unloaded it,
detoured into the eye, took some neat pictures & showed us what the real
envelope of our machines are. .... Richard Swiderski

first time after 4 years of building in my spare time.
I have flown 6 different ultralights over a 20 year
period, but had not flown for about a year and a
half.I did some taxiing to get use to the ground
handling, and took off when I felt comfortable. I did
2 landings; the 1st at a longer runway of about 1200
ft and my last back at our home strip of 700 ft. I'm
very pleased with the handling and love the view. My
thanks to all on the list. I have not posted much,
but have learned a lot from those who have.
