'Took my FireFly up for a ride this AM after working to tighten up some controls
slop. A friend in a 182 was kind enough to let me pass to the threshold so
I did my controls checks and hurried down the runway. I know I tend to give my
planes personalities but this little honey was rarin' to go. When I advanced
the throttle the acceleration pinned me to the seat-back and in about 50' of runway
she jumped into the air and we started climbing. I stayed ahead of her,
keeping the airspeed respectable, but after 10 hours in the Mk3 this was a real
skyrocket. It may have been the fresh fuel I had just loaded or maybe it was
the morning cool. She may have been showing off because she knows I have a potential
buyer. Great little plane.
I'm sure going to miss her.

I was going thru a manual that my buddy has from Kolb. He's building a Firestar
ll by the way. In this manual it stated that a person could make a Firstar 1
into a 103 compliant UL by putting a 277 on it instead of a 377. Has anybody done
this? Would it be light enough? My FS 1 is 330 lbs now. I kind of like the
idea of not having to conform and keep the plane I have. I'll do the SP thing
if I have to but I'd sure like to keep flying my plane without the feds digging
into my wallet. Do not archive.

Great looking paint on your plane, just be sure you keep the T-shirts tied
in good. Looking forward to seeing ya'll in London. Has anyone heard from
John Bickham lately? Sure hope he found some insurance!

Hi Gang:
I met a gentleman by the name of Jim Stocker at the Rotax 912 School
the first of Feb 2004, South Mississippi Light Aircraft, Lucedale,
Mississippi. Jim had come all the way from his home on the Knik River
near Palmer, Alaska, to attend the school. He has rebuilt a major
crashed RANS S7 into an imaculate Bush Plane, complete with a set of
Alaska Bush Tires. It is a class act. Jim gave me his card and told
me to be sure and call when I got to Alaska. I spent about a week at
Jim's place, which he built piece by piece. This is where he lives:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20002.jpg
While at Jim's I did day flights to Homer, Valdez, and McCarthy. This
particular day I was going to fly to Homer, on the southern tip of the
Kenai Peninsula. This is Jim's place from the air. Probably a 3/4
mile taxi from the house to the gravel strip on the Knik River:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20242.jpg
This is the Knik River, looking upstream toward the Old Glenn Highway
bridge. The airstrip is parallel to the river bank. The near end to
the taxiway is under water and extremely muddy. We used the very
short far end for take offs and landings, using a downstream heading
all the time. You could land a C5A on the gravel bar in the middle of
the river:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20241.jpg
Well......I am off the gravel strip and on my way to Homer. This is a
shot of Birchwood Airport. Mike Jacober had his operation here, until
he was killed in an aircraft accident last year. Mike was responsible
for insuring ultralights could fly from this airport:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20241.jpg
This is Anchorage. The open area in the middle of the city is Merrill
Field. Who says you can't live with an airport? This field is
amazing. I have never seen so many small airplanes, primarily tail
draggers, in one place. This is a tower controled field and traffic
is contant all day long:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20132.jpg
Approaching Turnagin Arm, this is a huge mud flat. They say you'll
sink up past your ears if you try to walk on it. Don't want to land
there either:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20139.jpg
Heading into Turnagin Arm. That's the highway on the left. The winds
were light and very favorable until I turned into the arm.
Immediately hit with 35 to 45 mph winds coming out of the mountains.
Notice the low ceiling filled with rain. Normal "unusual" Alaska
weather:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20142.jpg
I make it down and across the arm. Here I approach Hope. I want to
land at their gravel strip, then be on my way to Homer:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20146.jpg
Notice all the taildraggers. The strip had/was under improvement.
Lots of dust and soft sand and gravel:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20148.jpg
Out of Hope, I flew the beach, low level, all the way to Homer:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20149.jpg
Can you tell if the wind is blowing? Thank goodness it was coming off
the water:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20151.jpg
Alaskans are unique, imaginative folks that love cabins. All kinds of
cabins in some very unique and remote places. This guy wanted a
better view of the water:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20152.jpg
This is Soldotna on the Kenai River, famous for its salmon fishing.
The salmon are in and "combat" fishing is in effect. Check the little
dots lined up along the river bank. That is fishermen. The airport
in out in the distance:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20152.jpg
More combat fishing on the Kasilof River:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20157.jpg
It was a cold, wet day in July:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20163.jpg
These cliffs are very unstable. They are not rock, but sand and
gravel:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20164.jpg
Around the last corner, and there is Homer and Homer Spit through the
rain:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20167.jpg
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20169.jpg
Homer from Kachemak Bay to the south:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20180.jpg
I got my grilled halibut sandwich and coffee out on the spit. A
gentleman at the airport gave me a ride out, and I hitch hiked back to
the airport in the rain. Then it was off across Kachemak Bay to
Seldovia. The ceiling was extremely low and it was raining.
Commercial traffic, usually Cessna 206's, were keeping the airstrip at
Seldovia busy. These young pilots are building time up here in
Alaska. It either makes them good pilots or it kills them. I made a
quick landing, turned around and took off again. I did not want to
hamper their operation:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20182.jpg
Seldovia is right around that last point:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20185.jpg
Coming back out of Seldovia. Weather is really turning sour. I do
not want to get weathered in over here. There are no roads out. It
is either boat or air:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20188.jpg
I could not pass up a landing at Jakolof Island on their 1,000 foot
gravel strip, which started at one edge of the island and ended at the
other:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20208.jpg
The rain and warm weather has the fire weed and a spruce saplin
growing by leaps and bounds:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20189.jpg
Looking north up the strip at Jakolof Island:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20192.jpg
Jakolof Island is like story book land:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20194.jpg
Beautiful fireweed on Jakolof Island:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20203.jpg
Heading back toward Soldotna, I take one last look at Homer before I
go:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20219.jpg
Turnagin Arm does not look any better and the wind is still cooking:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20224.jpg
Not too comfortable flying over all this ice water. Survival is not
too good in Alaska waters:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20226.jpg
By the time I fly past Anchorage and up Cook Inlet, the weather
changes and the sun comes out. Those big mountains in the center of
the picture are also in the front of Jim Stocker's house. My flight
for the day is over. Time to set up for a landing next to the Knik
River. Hope I can dodge the bigger mud holes:
http://www.c-gate.net/~ppetty/photos/Alaska%202004/Part%20V/Knik%20River%20to%20Homer%20and%20rtn/2004a%20199.jpg
Next day flight is to Valdez and McCarthy. Time to call it a day.
