For those of you near your first flight and those who appreciate truly Ultra Light
Flying take a peak at this NOT KOLB RELATED link.
This is the neatest thing I've seen in quite awhile! (I'm glad she put that toothpick
there for perspective in that one shot. Imagine, that teeny nest, only
1.5 inches in diameter!)
This is truly amazing! Be sure to click on NEXT PAGE at the bottom
of each page...there are four pages.
This lady found a hummingbird nest and got pictures all the way
from the egg to leaving the nest. Took 24 days from birth to flight.

WHEW! I made it to Richard Swiderski's house and .......do I finally feel
safe with my wonderful firestar "by George!" NO...I repeat...NO.....Ivan is
coming and I just brought by George down THROUGH Frances!! God is throwing Scud
hurricanes at us!! One guy on the way down decided that HE is upset with the
queers!!! Well, everyone has an opinion. But I must say, I am happy to be at
least this far....still haven't gotten battened down for the latest threat
though.
In helping Rich a bit yesterday as we worked on his garage in the sweltering
....HUMIDITY OF 100%....he allowed the slanderous "geeez, this is really
hard" to escape from his personage. Now when the Swiderskiman shows that much
emotion....you KNOW things must be bad!!
Even though Frances blew hard enough to raise one of my trailer wheels clear
off the ground on the way down here on RT 95 near Jacksonville (no where
near the eye!!!!!!) everything is kinda under control now. ....and I just used
"stretchwrap, not shrinkwrap" on the plane. Will be going over the puppy after
Ivan to assure every rivet and brace is still intact.
For those who offered advice and assistance on this trip, I thank you
sincerely.

Fellow Flyers:
There is an outrageous proposal in the House of Representatives (H.R. 5035) sponsored
by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) that would require the Department of Homeland
Security to create a method of screening all passengers and property on
each flight of all passenger aircraft in the U.S., including general aviation
aircraft of all types. It would also prohibit any non-airline aircraft from flying
within 1,500 feet of any structure or building, and prohibit non-airline
aircraft from flying over any U.S. city with a population of 1 million or more.
It would further require that pilots of all aircraft in U.S. airspace remain
in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration, presumably by radio, regardless
of altitude or location.
See http://www.eaa.org/communications/eaanews/pr/040909_weiner.html for more info on this.
PLEASE write your congressman and help defeat this stupid proposal.
You can find your congressman here http://www.house.gov/ by providing your zip+4.

George, I can speak from a bit of experiance after riding 2 of these monsters
out from the middle of the state(like you are now). All humor aside, we had
very little in the way of structural damage, UNLESS you had a tree fall on
you. The large amount of mature trees inland really buffer the wind and keep it
off the ground. The trees really help if you have them, But alot of them blow
over. When they do they crush everything. Also, study the storm as it
approaches, all of our heavy winds came from between the East and the NE. The only
way to get wind from the south is if it skins by you on the west(This can be
really bad). Get a generator if you can and store as much fuel as possible. Fuel
ran out here both times for days. WE had sustained wind from charles of 100mph
for 20 min. and sustained winds from frances of 65 mph for 18 hrs. Sitting on
my porch that faced west I could bbq chicken and drink beer with only a light
breeze. and remember, HERicanes are meaner than HIMacanes. that was a joke.
Be careful and good luck

Hi Guys,
Does anybody know what the inches from CG fore and aft on a Firestar II
???
Seems the formula that they give you with the prints is only good for wasting
hour on different scenarios....which I've done....Now I'd like to calculate something
that the FAA can actually use...I've got their formula but I can't find
where the inch limits are....

Kolbers:
Spent yet another delightful day at the airstrip burying auger anchors, putting
additional mobile home straps over the top of the trailer and readjusting the
interior straps on the Fly... Now have three steel bands over the top plus one
4 foot auger anchor chained at each corner of the chassis...
Back is out, hands are 'et up (as they say in South Georgia), I'm sunburned to
a crisp, and I think I cracked a rib picking up concrete blocks while leaning
over against the edge of a sheet of plywood...
I quit. If Ivan wants that dumb little airplane that bad, let him have it...
if I can find enough of the pieces afterwards, I'll use em to build a rocking
chair and a still...
After the final shovel drill with the anchors, remained conscious just long enough
to take a couple of snapshots of how the trailer and Fly are secured....
These will be the "before" shots just in case... Have sent a few of 'em in to
be posted to photoshare if anyone is curious.

Wow, what a crazy week this has been.
Started out by having to bring the Mk-3 home from the airport as my friend Earl
whos hanger I have been keeping it in has finished the repairs on his Baby Ace
and needed the space my bird was occuping.
Flew home and circled my box canyon style 500 ft runway I had not yet landed on,
lined up on final a little too high and managed to get stopped just one foot
shy of a tree, WHOEE!
Tied her down a couple days as the weather was the best it's been all year.
Headed out last Saturday to pick up a friend so he could get aerial photos of his
Corn Maze on his farm. Landed on his 500 ft field, hot muggy somewhat rough
field that had a bigger up hill field on the departure end with waist deep Ragweed.
Should have never tried flying dual out of there, but I did. Broke ground
and found that the Ragweed went up hill faster than my loaded Kolb.
Lucky for me, Homer builds some tough birds. Drug it backward 200 feet out of
the weeds and after going back in to retreive a pop out Lexan vent that the weeds
had yanked loose, we found the only damage was a couple small tears in the
belly of the fuselage and my ACS pitot static tube.
After the best preflight I have ever done, I departed (solo this time) for another
friends (Real) private strip that borders on the Seele City National motocross
track in Delmont, PA.
There we gave my bird a bath and vaccumed out the Ragweed, than watched Jeremy
McGrath and the rest of the worlds best MXers practice for Sundays race.
The track officials took exception to my flying final over the parking area until
we explained that we were totally within the law at this licenced airfield.
Took a couple folks for rides while there and put a dogleg in my final approachs
to put us behind a tree line and avoid flying over the track grounds. (Doesn't
hurt to go the extra mile to keep good relations with neighbors)
Also performed my first loop while there. (Of course it was with a neat little
RC trainer that the owner was generous enough to let me try) You should have
seen Lindas face when I ran that one by her! :-)
Flew home, landed without incident this time at Rowe International, folded the
bird up and put her in the garage as Francis was on it's way.
Enjoyed the race Sunday after church.
Than today while clearing woods behind my house, I managed to hack my leg above
the left knee with the Husqvarna chainsaw. (Lucky I didn't skip church before
the races), didn't cut any vitals. Seventeen BIG stitches later, (six inside,
and 11 outside), a shot of antibiotic in the rear-end that hurt worse than the
chainsaw, two Vicodin, two Coors Lights and I am one thankful bugger tonight.
Will be out of comission for 5-6 weeks
Bottom line, my Kolbing is pretty much done for the year, anyone I had hoped to
visit, (sorry Jay Carter) will have to go on hold till Spring. The way things
are going, it's probably for the best.

Mike,
I'll send you (direct) what I used for my FS II that made the inspector
happy. The only question he asked was "is what you have here within the
manufacturer's limits?" And my answer was of course yes even though my CG
was at the aft limit or even a little beyond. It flies good though.
