I'm using 3/16 UHMW for the bottoms and aluminum to box in a frame. They'll be 10" wide. What length should be used so I'll stay on top of the snow. My buddy's himax ski's are 4' 6"x 10". It's heavier than my Kolb. What size do you people use? Do not archive. Dan Charter FS 1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>> i have not used skies but i have considered it..... a friend here that flies an avid has built his out of 2 snowboards, he cut a hold through the bottoms of the snowboards for the bottom of his wheels to set through, when on the ground the sknow board is aprox 3/4 inches above the hard surface, then built a small steel frame ( 1 inch chromemolly ) to reinforce the hole and also support the ski from the axel down. also he has a very small wheel mounted on the back that keeps it from rubbing the runway, for the tail wheel he used a part of a snowmobile ski, it is mounted with quite a bit of insidence. he now has the best of both worlds. as to staying on top of the snow, that would be a function of how hard or soft the snow is. i have been riding a snowmobile and plowing through 12 inches of fresh powder only to get off and sink up to my waist. and other times ride on top of the snow bairly to make a mark. boyd

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Paul Petty" <Lynnp@c-gate.net> Fellow Kolbers, Well, it was a short visit but well worth the long 18 hrs of driving to get there and back, and getting to place my hands Mark Germans wonderful Kolbra was the greatest! Mark is a super guy and did a super job on his airplane. The attendance was less than last year however I was happy to meet the man that started all this way back in the day. Homer and his lovely wife were on hand and what a joy it was to watch him look upward as John Hauck burned up 5 gallons of fuel soaring above us in the factory fire star. I said to one that" If he don't run out of gas were going to have to shoot him down" A reply from an fellow kolber said "Either way he will grease it" I had no doubt. John Williamson and several others made a nice formation fly over and I can't say enough about TNK hospitality. Dennis (welder) made my new door while Travis and Donnie gave me the new parts that we need to finish MS.Dixie.... To wrap this long post up I wish to thank Matt Drale for this form of commutation and the fine folks at TNK.Also I miss Linda did she leave the company? On a sad note and let me vent a bit.... There were many faces that I have seen before and many that that I comm. with on the internet via instant messaging. One of my internet buddies that I almost see daily had a mishap in his Sling Shot. Yes Wayne Wilson was very lucky to survive an engine out and our prayers are with Wayne for a speedy recovery. Us kolbers are tough bunch.. Woody was pricing a new cage for Wayne gotta luv our bunch ey?!!!!! Hang in there guys.... Love loyalty and respect pp and Ms Dixie

I was figuring mine will be at least 10" wide by 4' long not including the curved tips. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "George T. Alexander, Jr." <gtalexander@att.net> Giovanni et al: Close, but no cigar. Fisher 404, smaller, one holer, w/R447. This same guy had an Ultrastar and made skis for it from shortened water skis and custom brackets. Skis about 40-42 inches long and maybe 8" wide as I recall. With the Fisher he stuck (no pun intended) to the frozen lakes. Never used skis on it. Made sure the sno-mobilers had packed the snow down before he landed on the lake. He has since built a Pietenpol from the original 1929 plans. Another beautiful aircraft. ( http://gtalexander.home.att.net/piet.html ) Colors.... John Carpenter's Sport... if you look real close, you can see he even got color coordinated skins for his skis. Blue on the mains, matching the wings and red on the nose, matching the lower part of the rudder and the wing trim. He has a lot of time on his hands in the winter in MT.
