Gentlemen:
I and three other pilots had a nice, full flying day yesterday. We left our home
airport early and dropped in on Kirk (Snuffy) Smith only to discover he was
fogged in. We stopped at an alternate field a few miles away, then continued on
our way on a cross-country flight to a cider mill in St John MI that has a nice
runway next to it.
Unfortunately, about 15 miles from the cider mill, something went through my Ivoprop
propellor! I heard the "slap!" and began checking things over. The engine
never missed a beat and all seemed fine. I had the other Kolb driver, Mark Gray
in his Firestar, do a visual checkout and he was unable to see any obvious
problems. Of course, the entire group eagerly scrutinized my plane upon arrival
and could find -nothing- missing anywhere. We cleaned up the worst ding with
some duct tape carried by Mark Gray, and I was eventually able to get home safely.
On the way home, we again tried Kirk's place and found him relaxing by the pond
with his family. He also was unable to spot anything missing on my bird. We chatted
awhile, enjoying Kirk's company and playing with his son's dog, then made
our way home.
At this point, my best guess is a bird that I never saw coming. Maybe a meteor?
UFO?
Anyway, now I have to find the money for another prop. Arrrggghhh!

Hi All,,
we dont get the opportunity to fly from snow in the UK, at least not for the last
ten years, maybe longer.
However an instructor I know told me that when he was young he visited his girl
on the other side of the valley when the snow was deep by tieing the bumpers
(fenders?) from his car on his ultralight as ski`s.
Cheers

Hi all,
I have recently joined this group, being one of a syndicate of three which
has bought a flying Kolb Mk.III. This aircraft has the short wings and is
classed as a Group A aircraft in the UK (ie. not a microlight). It is 582
powered and also has the standard single central throttle.
Can anyone tell me if there are plans available for converting to two
throttle levers?
Thanks,

Gentleman,
There must be something in the air. Last Wednesday I had a prop
strike to my powerfin. Needs some repair to one blade but should be ok.
I could not find anything of the plane. I did hear a noise but thought
is was from the radio. Flew for another 45 minutes and then found the
problem as I inspected before putting her to bed. I ordered a warp which
came in today. I think those warps are a lot tougher. Anyone need a
repaired 70 3 blade powerfin for a 912. If so I will make you a great
deal!!! If it does not sell, I will make one a climb and the other a
cruse. Hope this rash of strikes ends soon.

Hi All:
Just to let everyone know I made it home safe and sound. Total flight time was
25.3 Hrs. burned 92.5 Gals of fuel and covered 1660 miles. The weather could
not have been better. Nice tail wind all the way home on Sun. Left TNK at
8:00am and arrived Forest Lake MN. @ 5:55pm. The Kolbra never missed a beat.
On the way back I had time to think of the people and places I had just experianced
and how lucky we all are to be able to build a small plane in the basement
and someday be able to go on a trip like this. Almost brings a tear to your
eye.
Would like to thank everyone at TNK Travis and Donnie and Bruce for making us feel
welcome. And to all the fellows kolbers for being the greatest! I asked
John Hauck if he would like to fly the Kolbra and he did, what an honor it was
to watch it fly with a pro like John. It was good to see Paul Petty and to
have time to talk about his Kolbra project and have some imput on the repair of
his cage. Me and John Williamson finally got our Kolbra's togather to fly.
John is a great guy to be with and has good storys. Also can't forget the time
I had with Homer talking about building and flying.
What a great trip.
Thanks again.

The big four have come and gone and we were lucky here in Tallahassee. Jeanne passed
through as a windy rain storm. My Mk3 sat snug in her hangar and we didn't
loose a single shingle from our house. Sure hope you boys down south and west
did as well and that the balance of this season is more gentle to us all.
I am planning to go to my hangar on Wednesday morning for more stall testing if
the weather gets just a little better.

Fellow Kolbers,
For the folks that couldn't attend, You missed a great Fly-In.
For the folks that I did get to see again or meet for the first time, Thanks
for being in the Kolb Family.
I want to thank all the people I was able to give a ride to and say I'm
sorry if you wanted a ride but weren't able to get it.
I guess I was the last one that flew to the Fly-In/Drive-In to make it back
home. I got back to Arlington at 1614 hours CDT.
Some quick stats for this flight:
Total time flown: 32.4
Fuel burned: 137.7
Longest flight leg: 3 hours 24 minutes
Time flown around Chesnut Knolls Airpark: 6.2 hours
As soon as I can get some photos up on a webpage I will let you know where
they are.

I think the factory has a retrofit, you might contact them.
I came up with my own system, installed an aftermarket throttle quadrant on
the left fuselage wall of my MKIII. (for a picture of it, check the 2004-05
Aircraft Spruce catalog, page 156, model 3.) Since it is a reversing
capable quadrant, I attached cables off the unused holes in the arms and
ran them around to another throttle lever on the passenger side of the
aircraft, creating a push\pull cable arrangement. If you are not familiar
with this system, check out a Honda motorcycle throttle cable system, same
principle. Worked pretty good.

Kolbers,
While re balancing the propeller blades on the FireFly, I did a little
patching up. The back side and the leading blade edges are slowly being
eroded away. I believe it is caused by the long taxi in and out to the
runway on a concrete surface. The concrete slowly breaks down, and becomes
littered with sand and small concrete particles. And the tires pick them up
and throw them up into the air just in front of the propeller.
You can see the effect at:
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly114.html
Wheel pants would help, but they would put the FireFly in the "Fat" category.

My brother is a retired Motorola Executive that was part of the cell phone
development and I put the question to him. He says BS. The ban came about
when air phones were installed in aircraft. The airlines might be able to
ban their use but show me the law that bans cell phone use in aircraft.

Hello John, My name is Jerry Curtin. I live in Mississippi. Was looking
foward to meeting you at the fly in but was unable to attend. I wanted to
ask you why you changed engines on your plane. I was under the impression
that the 85hp would be more than enough to push you right along. If it was
enough power, do you think another prop would do better as far as top end
and fuel economy. I was thinking of the 120 Jabiru with the airmaster
constant speed prop would push the Mark lll Extra right at vne but keeping
it just below would translate to great fuel economy. Please let me know what
you think. Thanks for your time, Jerry

Subject: | Jabiru Engines and Kolbs |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Williamson" <kolbrapilot@comcast.net>
Hi Jerry and all,
I flew the Kolbra with the Jabiru 2200 (80 hp) for 508 hours and the engine
worked great. Jabiru makes a very nice engine if the application can
maintain 90 knots or more. Their engines require an adequate airflow to keep
the CHTs below the limits. The Kolbra just could not go fast enough to keep
the CHTs down.
I flew a 58 inch 2 blade Warp Drive prop with leading edge protection. This
was the largest prop that Jabiru and/or Warp Drive would recommend on the
Jabiru 2200. This combination let me cruise at 73-78 knots with a top level
flight speed of 89 knots. Climb performance was marginal when you loaded the
airplane up to 1000 pounds.
I can't speak on the flight characteristics of the MarkIII Xtra, but it does
have the same flaperon setup as the Kolbra. The Kolbra ailerons get REAL
heavy at speed above 87 knots and at the Vne of 96 knots, it is more than a
full time job staying on top of the controls. The larger Kolb aircraft fly
great at the 60-75 knots speed they were designed to fly at.
I tried a Verner 133M and it didn't work. I now have the Rotax 912ULS with a
3 blade 68 inch Warp Drive prop. The 100 hp is just a little overkill but I
can climb faster than most Kolbs flying.
