We have the Warp Drive prop pitched for 6400 rpm WOT. Top speed has gone
from 80 to 85 mph. With a 220 lb. pilot, climb is 1100 fps. At cruise speed of
60 mph [5200 rpm], fuel burn is at the same rate as my 503 poered FS II.
I thing TNK should slightly beef up the cage, add a couple braces in the
wing, & offer the 582 as a option on the FS II. Seems the way to go for big ol'
guys, float operations, short field or high altitude work.

Rolled out of bed, jumped in my truck and arrived at the airport at 7:30 AM. This
was a major feat in itself for one who enjoys his retirement as much as I do.
The joy of flying makes it worthwhile.
There was some ground fog but it would "burn off as soon as the sun came up...".
An hour later the fog was thinning and I could see blue sky all around at about
a 45 degree angle. Preflight was complete, no TFRs in the area and wind was
north/south at zero. With my notepad strapped on one knee and my new Magellan
Meridian on the other it was time to go and do some stall testing.
As I moved down the runway she reminded me that she doesn't like to take off at
full throttle because the 912's high thrust line pushes the nose down. We left
the asphalt as soon as I reduced the throttle to ~ 70% then climbed to 1500'
at full throttle. The haze cleared at 2200'.
Flew straight north with the sun on my right for about 15 minutes. The haze obscured
the far horizon in all directions but I could clearly see the ground below.
This was a perfect example of almost IFR. I imagined what it would be like
to see a pair of F-16s coming out of the haze as I was doing my little tests
and concluded that the testing could wait. I cruised around for a while then decided
it was time to go home. By this time the airport was well out of sight.
The GPS pointed the way home perfectly and the sun was very logically now on my
left. Only my compass was confused. Somehow swinging the compass had dropped
off of my list and this instrument was useless. The GPS provides more information
and is more accurate than the compass but the compass does not rely on batteries
and could one day be the only instrument available. "Adjust compass" rose
to the top of my list.
I learn or re-learn something every time I fly. Fly often, get better at it.

After 4 years of construction, I flew my Mark3 Xtra for the first time
yesterday. Aircraft flew great, was a tremendously satisfying event.
My thanks to the many members on this list who helped out with my
questions over the years. Couldn't have done it without you.

Its a sad day for me. Dale Cross, of Groves Texas, an old aquaintence of
mine who was one of the pioneers in kolb flying, and had numerous awards,
Died Saturday, Flying his Kolb Flyer in an exibition. I dont know any of the
particulars except witnesses said he took off then the plane rolled to the right
and impacted nose down. Maybe John Hauck can find out more than I have. I
feel sure others on this list have met or new Dale. He was a swell guy who loved
flying, going nowhere, just for the fun of it. I will miss him sorely.
