Ed and others,
This is a very sad day. Del Cross has been flying that orange and white
twin engine Kolb Flyer for as long as I can remember. He flew at Oshkosh
for so many years. Could it be he had an engine out on takeoff and
couldn't recover?

Good Ed/Gang:
Sorry to hear about Dale Cross. I got a phone call from Travis Brown,
New Kolb Aircraft, early this morning informing me of the accident and
loss of Dale. Travis had no other information other than he had died
as the result of a crash of his Flyer.
There will probably be a report in the FAA Daily Accident Report,
later this morning. We can do a search of TV stations and news papers
in the area of Groves, TX, and get more info.
Do we have anyone in that area? What event was Dale attending?
I have known Dale for many years, but only at Sun and Fun, and
Oshkosh. A few years ago, Dale's Flyer was flipped over on its back
during a thunderstorm at Oshkosh. Last time I saw him was at Lakeland
this year.

If you type in - www.abc13.com - There is a picture of Dell
Cross's Kolb Flyer after the crash. I think his plane was 24or 25 years old.
The last time I saw Him I commented to Him he should replace the rusty 1/16
cables to the rudder with new 3/32" ones, but I dont think he felt a need to. Dont
know if that was the cause or not. There was an autopsy ordered but Im not
sure how to find the results. I think the FAA is going to investigate the
crash. Wish I new more.

Good grief! Dont you have any noise controls in the USA.?
Here in theEurope we have to go to great lengths to REDUCE the noise from
our a/c. Every engine/aircraft/propeller combination has to be measured
according to laid down criteria and if you are too noisy, you don`t fly.
Unfortunately it often takes only a complaint from one person to start the
local authorities on the trail to closing a flying strip down.
At one time all microlight flyers were roundly hated by nearly everyone.
They complained of lawnmower engines in the sky droning around spoiling
their afternoon nap in the garden.
The enforcement of the noise regulations plus increasing speeds plus the
move towards 4 stroke engines has helped a lot.

I don't believe that our aircraft's storage compartments have the capacity
to carry the required parts to keep the HD's running. Also it is very hard
to find a place to pull over and work on them at 3000 feet.

Well... add another 2 grand to the cost of the Kolbra but I will have the Bose
AR headsets or at least one in it. Yesterday I got my first ride in Charleys RV8
and he has them in that plane. What a difference they make! So if you want
to lose the noise and can drop a grand go for it! Worth every penny.

Paul/Kolb community,
Make sure they work in your particular environment. I've used the Series
2 and the X Bose in aircraft, they
seem to work better in some cases, as if they were 'tuned' for a certain noise
footprint. One client switched back to
his old srs.2 from the X because the X worked poorly (Cessna 340). As long as
you can try them out, or return in 7
days, etc., you should be fine. Are you using an intercom? That also can be a
big factor in ANR ops.

Ultralights and experimentals are so rare around here that I feel a
little relief when I hear one come over. They are usually quieter
than some of the standard gen av planes. If they are just passing
through it's a short exposure, unlike having a cottage on a lake and
being forced to listen to some halfwit go around in circles on a
jetski...what's that all about? The interstate is near my house
and once in a while a flock of harleys will go by. A bit of noise
but they are soon gone....hey, it's their ears.

They probably won't be near as effective in your MkIII as in the RV-8. I
haven't found anything more effectivre than my LightSpeed QFR Crosscountry with
ANR at only about $300.
Try the Bose in your plane before you buy.

I have a Headsets brand of ANR in my Sigtronics headset. They are sold as a
user installed kit that fits in most headsets. With my low RPM VW they work
super in fact they worked so well that I couldn't hear the engine go to
14,000 RPM when it self districted after the reduction drive failed. They
are $160 for the kit. I can't say they will work in a plane with a High RPM
engine but they work very well for me. There is only so much any ANR can do,
the higher frequencies waves happen faster than thy can be canceled.

In the 50's I made a lot of short trips to England from my office in
Germany. Used to take walking trips from one teeny town to another, only
a couple or more miles--and a pub in each!
So I can see where you just about can't fly most anywhere there without
flying over some town or houses. But here, at 500' few people can hear
my 447, and at 1000' close to zero. Between today's traffic, mcs &
scooters, and the dang leaf blowers--an ultralight--even a fatty--isn't
noticed, or objected to.

Paul,
There are two factors in noise reduction.
Passive and Active
Passive is mostly a matter of how much sound insulation the headset has and
Active is sound generated by the headset that in effect negates the sound.
The Lightspeed cross country is mostly passive, the 3G is mostly active.
It is hard to do both because of size constraints. The Bose is mostly active.
You will probably have better results with the passive in a 912S, try both.

FWIW, I've been a huge fan of Lightspeed ANR headsets for years. I had a
20XL, and a 25XL in my RV-8 (Lycoming engine), and they were fantastic. I
also used them in other GA type planes, and they were just as good. When
the RV-8 was sold (with the 20XL), I traded the 25XL for a 30-3G.
The first time I tried the 30-3G it was in my rotary engine powered RV-3.
Unfortunately, the frequency and ambient noise level were so different from
normal GA planes, that it overwhelmed the active part of the headset. What I
got was popping and crackling, which was worse than turning them off. Back
they went to Lightspeed, and they "repaired" them. When I got them back,
they worked fine for a few flights, then started popping again. Once again,
Lightspeed worked on them, and said there was nothing wrong. The only way
they could make them reproduce my problem was if they turned up their test
rig to full volume. In other words, they said my engine was just too loud.
They did install the old, larger ear seals, and that did help. Around that
time, I also took the unmuffled turbo off the engine, and replaced it with a
muffler. That seems to have lowered the noise level to the point where the
30-3G headsets behaved fairly well, with only an occasional pop.
Now for the part anyone here might care about- I took these same headsets to
MS to use while flying back the 912S powered SS. Unfortunately, the noise
from that engine, in such close proximity to the pilots head is just too
much for them. They were popping and crackling about 3 times worse than
they had done with unmuffled turbo rotary. I finally turned off the active
part, because it was doing more harm than good.
I still like the Lightspeeds, but realize that they (and likely others) have
their limits. If anyone can suggest a good ANR headset that is known to
work with a 912S in a pusher design like the Kolb, I'll need a set by about
next Summer.

A few days ago, I indicated that if I were rich, I would own the LightSpeed
Thirty 3G instead of the QFRXCc, which I currently have. I based that
strictly on the product comparison on LightSpeed's website. The Thirty 3G [at
$650]
shows several db's better active noise reduction than the QFRXCc [at $379].
I was able to actually try the Thirty 3G last Saturday in my FS II. In no
way was it nearly as good as my cheaper set.
My friend, Chuck Reinert would like to sell his barely used Thirty 3G for
$400.

Maybe I'm repeating something already said before but here goes anyway:
The mike on an ANR takes the sound in from the front and the back and
cancels out the front. A tractor engined plane makes noise in the front
and you yak in the back....easy to separate. It has a little problem
with
a pusher since the noise is on the same side you are. Maybe I'm way
off on this but I'll find out next summer when I try mine out. This
year
I used a regular set of sporting goods store ear defenders since there
was nobody to talk to. A real pleasure.
Maybe if you tried some kind of a foam lip shield around the mike it
would

The Headsets, Inc. mod on my David Clark H-10-80's has a small mic in each
earpiece as well. I don't understand
how it all works, but it works well so far. I believe it uses the latest PFM technology
as well ;
) .
