I've been reading the posts on headsetswith intrest.
I have been thinking of buying a Comtronics brand
helmet and headset combo and have not seen them
mentioned. I wonder if anyone has ever used them?

Looked in my bag after 10+ years have gone by to see what I had been
using.
A pair of Telex DBM 1010s, plugged into an Oregon Avionics ICS-2
They worked great before, we'll see what happens in a Kolb.

The Canadians have been quaffing good stuff for years.>>
Yep. I had somely micro brewery beer in Vancouver. There are quite a few
small independent brewers in this country now making very palatable brews
too.
<<I would love to do some low and slow over your countryside. It would have
to be more entertaining than Kansas.>>
There is certainly plenty of variation. One problem you do not have in
Kansas is that we have quite a lot of fields which are too small to land in
if it gets all quiet unexpectedly.
The pics that have been put up on this list from the US have been
spectacular. John Haucks Alaska pics, the pics of the Michigan fly around,
those lovely pics of the cotton fields and the trees changing colour. You
have plenty of variation, it is just that we have it all in about 50 miles.
Cheers
Pat

If your are looking for LightSpeed headsets, I found a place who sells them
at a very discounted rate. The LightSPEED QFR-XCc ANR
275.00 about 100 off list. http://www.airplanegear.com/lightspeed.htm

Kolbers,
I used a Lightspeed 15XL ANR head set with the FireFly with Rotax 447 engine
mounted. The head set did a good job, and helped make one hour flights much
less tiring than before I used them. Then I mounted the Victor 1+. It is a
quieter engine due to water cooling and a very effective muffler. With the
Victor 1+ the ANR head set knocked out too much of the low frequency noise,
and I could hear the reed valves clicking or slapping. On hour flights I
found this irritating. Because the engine was so much quieter, I returned
to a passive headset so the low frequency sound would mask the reed valve
slap.
I have an advantage of flying without a full enclosure. I may get beat up
by noise from the rear, but I do not get reflected noise off the inside of
the enclosure. So, ANR headsets may work a little better under open cockpit
conditions.
Another thing that has helped reduce cockpit sound pressure has been the
change from a two to a three blade propeller. With two blades set at 19
degrees, they both pass by the wing trailing edge at about the same time
which give a couple of "Whumps" per propeller rotation. With the three
blades set at 13 degrees this changes to six much smaller "Whumps". The
propeller sound frequency is up but the amplitude is down, and it is the
amplitude over time that wears you out. Also streamlining the struts
removed a low frequency strumming like that of a bass viol during
flight.

A friend of mine came back from a flight to Canada and a few days later a

How about the light aircraft group. Do you have to pay also?? Herb in

Morning Herb/All:
I don't know about your friend's aircraft, but you know what I fly.
When we file a flight plan and fly into Canadian airspace, we are
liable for paying for their services. However, it is for only the
Quarter of the year we are there, and it is a one time shot, not
charged for each landing, etc.
I am waiting on an answer now to the charges I received this last
flight through Canada. After closely scrutinizing the bill, I
discovered the weight bracket they had placed my MKIII in was more
than the gross take off weight. I questioned them about it and we are
in the process of getting an answer.
The bill was not for hundreds of dollars though. More like $12.00 or
$15.00. The small private aircraft bracket I was placed in would
include most single engine GA airplanes flown in the US.
I got another bill from the airport manager of Prince George Airport,
BC, for $10.00 parking fee. This one came in two months after I was
at Prince George. They must get a computer printout of all flight
plans routed through their facility. Curious why they did not collect
the money while I was there.
Your friend must have been flying a large commercial passenger hauling
aircraft?
Take care,
john h
