I think someone at the Kolb Fly-in said the float development was
stopped because the cost and complexity was getting out of hand. You
might want to give them a call to make sure.

Speaking of swimming... has TNK arrived at a pricetag for their MkIII
amphibious
floats? They sure look like an attractive option.

Rex and all
The development and flight testing of the amphibious floats is ablut 90%
complete. Brian Melborn and myself have gotten the project this far with the
help of TNK. The design is very simple and cost effective to build, However, TNK
is unwilling to fund the final tooling unless there is significant interest
and as always a hunk of cash on the table. The complete bolt on kit should sell
for under $9000.00 For those of you that are interested in this option you
should express that interest to TNK or Brian or myself. If TNK decides not to
proceed, Brian and I have the option to take on the completion.
In the meantime, I have been busy designing a bolt on kit for the FireFly. I
purchased Duane thePlane's FireFly #007 and have two makes of floats on order.
The mount system design is complete and a prototype is completed. Brian will
be coming to Orlando in Dec to flight test. This is a straight float(no
wheels) that meets Part 103. The complete bolt on kit will be ready immediatly
after flight test. The projected cost is $3500. Bolt it on, Go fly. All components
for this kit are designed tooled and ready to build.

Subject: | Breaking Cable Splitters |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: Kirby Dennis Contr MDA/AL <Dennis.Kirby@kirtland.af.mil>
Kolb Friends -
I'm having problems with the cable splitters on my Mark-III.
Seems the ends are breaking free from the splitter body.
I'm referring to the little nipple ends that the cable housings fit into -
one on the bottom, two on top.
The whole assembly is aluminum, and I thought those nipple ends seemed
somewhat fragile when I first installed them. Sure enough ... they're
breaking off the splitter body.
Is this common?
Is there a solution to fix?
I'll likely order new ones, but can I prevent a reoccurance in the future?
Many thanks -

Dennis/Gang:
First I have heard of it.
Is there a solution to fix?
Still not quite sure what the problem is and why it is happening.
Just took a look at a couple I have on the bench that were probably
used with my 582 10 years ago. Looks like it would be pretty
difficult to break one.
Got some pictures of the problem?
Take care,

Used to be a Skyboy aircraft located at the
Rimrock airport. Owner seemed to have
a lot of difficulty keeping it flyable (couple
of minor mishaps, I think).
That owner sold it before he had it a year.
Elevation there was 4k, so it might have
been a bit underpowered (had a 912).
I remember a lot of comments about it when
it arrived, and a lot of thank you's when it
finally left. Noone wanted to see it again.
Sorry if this is a bit vague, but, it is mostly
due to 2nd & 3rd-hand comments. None
of which came from the owner, just others
who are based on the field. Also, this is
from a year or two ago, maybe there have
been some improvements.

I have an hour of dual in a skyboy and it is different. I was flying the
right seat (student) with a throttle in my right hand and the joy stick (on center
console) in my left. Had never flown that configuration before. It sets low
to the ground and you land very close (your butt) to the runway. It had a 582
and performed nicely. I just did not get comfortable with the control stick to
my left side.
I went back to a Moyes Dragon Fly and my Cardinal since the ultralight
instructor thing was up in the air. I may peruse it when I finish my MK III.

Hi All:
Just got off the telephone with John Williamson, Kolbra. He and Gary
Haley, MKIII, will be flying from Texas to Lucedale, MS, Fri for the
flyin. I may have to get my act together, get in gear and get flying
so I can meet them there Fri, or Sat if I am moving slowly.
Bill Griffin, Baby Ace, James Tripp, FSII, Dan Horton, Clipped Wing
Maxair Rocket, and I will be flying down also.
I finished painting this morning. Am working on replacing rudder
hinges tonight. Tomorrow I will replace the tail section and see if
Miss P'fer will fly.
We zipped up the left and right sides of the tailpost behind the lower
vertical stabilizer with some 1.5X.065 4130 strip. In addition, we
made some streamlined struts out of 3/8 4130 by ovalizing them, then
stuck them to the lower tube of the lower vert stab near the tail wire
hole, with the top welded to the 6" ring. The struts were Dan's idea
to carry the lateral loads up to the ring instead of concentrating
them to the unreinforced area of the tail post behind the 6" tube.
We may not have the problem solved indefinitely, but I think it will
last longer this time than the two years it lasted last time we
repaired it.
I'd post some pics, but the cable to up load pics to the computer is
up on the hill in the 5th wheel, and I'm scared of the dark.
Take care,
john h

Do a search on the UL list. The plane seems to had it share of incidents,
more than one would expect for the number of units in the
field. Investigate it much more thoroughly before jumping in.

My friend has one... he let me fly it once... it has a 582. It was a bit
too "GA-ish" for me, too enclosed... I prefer the wide-open air. For the
short time I flew it, I didn't notice any negative characteristics (I flew
it from the left seat) other than being a bit cramped.

Re: impressions of the Skyboy...
Had 2 or 3 of 'em on the field for a while... still at least one there...
Noticed they seem to have an unusual affinity for "for sale" signs... They
had 2 forced landings I know of... one nosewheel driven up through the
floor... Dunno for sure, but doubt the landings were the airplane's fault in
either case...
My major impression from watching one of the owners try to give instruction
in his (582 powered) was that it was clearly underpowered... Last Spring on
many weekends, I watched his airplane stagger around the pattern as he was
giving students dual. It was obviously a wide open throttle event around
almost all of the WIDE pattern he was flying... nose up in the air,
mushing... Would never seem to get to more than 400 or 500 feet before
time to turn base leg. On one particular day it was noticably worse than
usual...I was so impressed by the lack of climb performance that I stopped
what I was doing and got the binoculars from my truck and studied the Skyboy
for a couple of circuits... as it climbed out the elevators appeared to be
up at least ten degrees and it was using a LOT of runway before it could be
coaxed to climb out of ground effect... I gave the glasses to a buddy to
take a look at the elevators the next time it came around, to see if he saw
what I was seeing, and he saw it the same way... I know that the owner
wasn't a big guy, but I don't know how large that particular student was...
I do remember that it was almost painful to watch it operate... I also
remember thinking that he would be in a world of hurt if that 582 packed up
just over the departure end... I doubt he'd have had a prayer of getting the
nose stuffed down before it stalled...
Would guess that the 912 powered items would be a big improvement... I
reckon it is possible that the one I watched with the 582 was propped
incorrectly. I will say that the ones I sat in and looked over appeared to
be well finished airplanes from a workmanship standpoint...
Worth what ye paid fer it...
