I was really disappointed to hear that Kolb has gave up on the floats.
I saw the Kolb on floats at Osk. and decided that was the combination that I wanted
to go with. I just can,t go out and write a check for $9000 with out saving
for it. I'm still in the process of building so I an two years away from needing
the floats. I figured by the time I was through building I would have the
money saved up.Disappointed in Kansas Rick Pearce

Ed Heath designed some excellent easy to build floats for the Heath Parasol back
in the 30's. The plans are available in one of EAA's 1930's homebuilders manuals.
I believe they could be adapted to a Kolb and could handle it. I have a
copy of the manual and will dig it out and post the exact date if anyone expresses
any interest.

Jack, clever device. I like the use of the off-the-shelf components.
There was a recent post by someone who had a wing dropping early
during stall and wondered if he could help remedy the effect by
adjusting
the flap rod on that side. I know I shall be experimenting in that area
next spring. -BB do not archive

You might want to check out the Full Lotus amphibious floats. They have
some very unique and useful features. Frank Reynen on this List has a set

Hi all not sure if this will post as I have not had any from the list for several
days now.
Have just finished testing these little babies and have managed to get the stall
speed down to 34 Kt at 431kg from the initial 37 Kt.

I decided not to go with the Hexadyne last year so I don't have any
information on the engine. I have my MK III covered now and have started the

Hi Kolbers,
I just got home from Ronnie Smith's Fly in. On Hand were 8 Kolb aircraft. I think
we out numbered the challengers this year! I met with John Williamson and got
some really good advice for mounting the gear legs and had the pleasure of
meeting several other Kolb drivers. John Hauck made a grand stand approach as
the fella in the maxair drifter landed and John Hauck made a fast pass then a
nice climb! Words from the onlookers were "WOW Look at that thing!" Then James
Tripp landed and we clearly had the field out numbered.Hand shakes were exchanged
and lies were told and tents were set up as we were leaving. This year I
cheated.. I caught a ride down from KLUL in a beachcraft Barron! We made a 200
knot pass at 30' AGL and I was home by 01600. Next year I plan to camp there
with Ms. Dixie.
One sad note.... One of this years pilots managed to get his self killed by a prop
strike to the torso. God rest his sole and any prayers for him and his family
will be heard by our father...the son and the holy ghost... Amen
Love you guys please be careful

Full Lotus floats, 12'6", on Robert Broadwell's MkIII have worked out really
well. We adapted "QT" amphibious gear. That setup worked well with 1 person
on board of about 190 lb., 2 up made it difficult to get off the water [this
with a 582].
Unlike Frank Reynen, we did not fit any rudders or tailwheels to the rear of
Robert's floats; steering on terra firma is via the original tail wheel. On
water- anticipate & use short blasts of the throttle.
We think the new 912uls we are about to install will solve the "gittin' off"
problem.

Paul and Gang,
Other than the tragic accident early this morning it was a great day. I am
thankful I didn't make the 1 1/2 mile trip any sooner or I probably would
have witnessed the accident first hand. I spoke to Ronnie Smith before I
left tonight and he said that the guy was still talking when they loaded him
up. They pumped 11 pints of blood in him at the hospital but he was cut up
so bad that the bleeding couldn't be stopped. It appears that he was
cranking a gyro copter or trike (not sure which) with a Rotax 618 with a "C"
box that has the clutch in it. Somehow the throttle got opened up. Don't
know if he overlooked it or what, but as he stood outside the craft and pull
started it he was struck by the prop. I understand he was cut from the back
side starting at the shoulder down to the waist and clear through to his
ribs.
On a better note I got to meet some really great people today and see old
friends that I haven't seen in quite a while. The new faces to me were John
Williamson, Gary Haley, Bill Griffin, James Tripp and some others that I
can't remember their names. Old friends where Paul Petty, Ted Cowan, Mike
Highsmith, Jim Holbrook, Tim Warlick and Mike Breland, and last but not
least John Hauck (probably forgetting somebody). I hung out with John
Williamson and Gary Haley the most and they are just super guys and are way
out of my league on knowledge of airplanes and FAA rules. It was fun to set
around Miss P'fer and listen to some of this folks tell stories of all
sorts.
After the supper was over John Hauck broke out his new toy, a Dell laptop.
He then proceeded to awe the crowd that gathered around with his Alaska trip
pictures from this summer. Folks were absolutely amazed that he was flying
that kind of territory in the Miss P'fer. Also amazing was the fact that the
picture show lasted a good hour and John could call the name of every
airport, mountain range, highway, lake, town etc. in every picture. He man
is sharp as a razor.
Well, that's it for tonight.
Later,
John Cooley
