For whatever reason I've found if 2-strokes set for long, the oil on the plugs make them weak to cause hard starting. Note when you crank it over does it pump fuel to the carbs, also is the engine fuel primer working. Also if you have a squeeze bulb, does it pump fuel when you squeeze it - that the one way valve is not stuck. If you squirt a little fresh premix fuel into the carb throat, does it fire? jerb Vic wrote: > > --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Vic" <vicw@vcn.com> > > > > I have a single carb 503. --> Kolb-List message posted by: edharvey1@juno.com DO NOT ARCHIVE Hi everyone. I have been a "lurker" on this list for over a year now so I guess it's time to introduce myself. I first joined this list (and several others) in the summer of 2003 as I was deciding what and if I should build. On Dec 2, 2003 I took delivery of Firefly kits 1 & 2 and started in. As a first time builder I relied heavily on this list and the archives for guidance and information. Every thing I needed was there; I never had to post a question. Since I was inexperienced I built strictly according to plan except that I moved the rudder and brake peddles aft 6 ", put a 6" offset in the control stick, and installed the flaperon handle backwards so that I could reach it; all this being necessary because I'm only 5'4" tall. I completed my Firefly in August after 635 man-hours and, because I had never flown an ultralight, I started out by doing crow hops. On September 4, 2004, after some 20-30 crow hops, I just kept on going. First flight was totally uneventful. The only problem I've had occurred the first time I took off in the grass which was a little high: she went up on her nose, destroying the pitot tube and badly damaging the pilot's ego. I was well aware of the potential- it's been covered here more than once- but I managed to do it anyway. I flew a total of 32 hours before putting it away for the winter in mid-November. It's a beautiful flying little machine and she's everything I had hoped for when I started this project. Please add my name to the Kolb owners list. Regards, Ed Harvey Firefly FF03-4-00038. I have terminal cancer and more than all my extra dollars are already spoken for. But this doesn't deminish my love of flying which I've been doing for 35 years or so. I have a pvt. ticket and have built three experimentals and do love to fly and always will. But all I can do is the best I can do. --> Kolb-List message posted by: N27SB@aol.com Hi to all, Yesterday Bryan Melborn successfully hopped the Firefly #007 on floats. After that I jumped in and sped around doing step taxi turns but no hops. We had a front moving in on us and a lake lacking generous size. With the recent loss of our friend Norm we opted to wait for better weather and a larger lake. Bryan and I both agreed that the "WetFly" handled like a pussycat We have been successful in keeping Part 103 weight limitations. My float experiance is limited to a cub with an 85hp cont. The firefly is about 10 times easier.I will try to post some pictures later today Steve Boetto WetFly #007 Got it wet!

After all that's what grass roots aviation is all about. Having fun with what you got! Nothing wrong with a Cuyuna or an Ultrastar! And I'm not embarrassed about the fact that I bought a complete flying plane with a 582 for less than the price of a new 912. ~ Earl

Many other airplanes through the years (16). I'm 86 and learned to fly in 1935 (may be the oldest Kolb driver). Back to a Cuyuna UltraStar at present (middle Tenn.) There are many UltraStars still out there with Cuyunas. There's a list somewhere. Start a new list for us. Something else in common. I'm fighting two big, fat melanomas. To you, no need to say anything more. The old "Homer Kolb" really has very little in common with the "New Kolbs". Don't tell the new, young whippersnappers, but the "Old Kolbs" are a better airplane all around for fun, sport flying. Get the new list started !! Everyone started out with a basic no frills airplane. Then some gravitated to bigger, faster, more expensive rides. Two reasons kept me from doing the same: I was perfectly content with a bare bones chugger, and family priorities. It would have been selfish to beggar my clan so I could go 20 mph faster. Subject: Humble Beginnings
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Hauck" <jhauck@elmore.rr.com> Good Morning All: The Ultrastar was the first fixed wing airplane I ever flew, and I built it in my shoe box sized basement. In fact, built all three of my Kolbs in that shoe box. Not a greater feeling than to build the first airplane and fly it for the first time. I flew my Ultrastar and my buddy's Ultrastar from 1984 to 1987, when I completed my Firestar. Back then we did not call them "original" Firestars. I guess I would still be flying my Ultrastar if I had not accidently destroyed it. Up until that time, I flew it ever chance I got, which was every day, unless the weather was horrible. After I lost it, and during the build time of my Firestar, I was fortunate to be able to fly my buddy's Ultrastar to satisfy my appetite for flying these little airplanes. If it had not been for Ed's Ultrastar, my Firestar would have been completed much sooner. Many days, down in the basement drilling holes and popping rivets, I would look outside, decide it was a great day to fly a little, and be gone for cow pasture and my little airstrip. I flew my Firestar until it was also destroyed, or I would probably still be flying it. Was a great little airplane. Well, I finally got the Mark III built. Back then, 1991 and 1992, we called them Mark III's. No requirement to put "classic" or "extra" with the model. Must have finally got it right. I'm still flying my MKIII, and have built quit a lot of time on it. I still love to fly it. It satisfies all my aviation needs. That is why I am still flying it after nearly 13 years and 2,257.4 hours as of day before yesterday. I have no desire or needs to go any higher, faster, or slower. Well, I take part of that back. I would like to have about 15 mph more cruise. That would put me at the magic number of 100 mph. However, my MKIII is not comfortable to fly on cross countries above 90 mph. In fact, it is happiest at 85 mph. Done a lot of traveling at 85. Wonder how long one of these Rotax powered MKIII's will fly? Have no idea. Hopefully, until I get my fill of flying, or until I can not longer fly safely and comfortably. There's more than enough room on the Kolb Builders List for everything with a Kolb handle on it. Recently, there have been days on this List with little or no traffic. There is not an overabundance of traffic now. Tomorrow I am going to fly 60 miles from Gantt IAP to Circle C airstrip, meet up with Ted Cowan and his Sling Shot, and fly about 100 miles with him, south, to Doyle Langford's airstrip and flyin. We are going to take our camping gear and sleep on the airstrip or in Doyle's hanger or somebody's RV. We will be imersed in "little" airplanes for two days and a night. These are great people who I have come to love and respect for many years. Dale Sellers, or anyone else reading this, if you can make it to Doyle's flyin tomorrow, you should. It is 96.7 miles from the Americus airport to Doyle's airstrip. That is probably about 90 miles from your place on the west side of Americus. I would be proud to share my old MKIII and take you flying. There are others that will be there that would feel the same way. Like I said above, these are great people who love to share their love of flying. Guess I better get up and get busy if I am going to make a 0700 take off in the morning. john h DO NOT ARCHIVE

I have model-specific lists for all of the RV-series of aircraft, for example. Please let me know if this is what the Kolb Listers would like. A couple of months back, there was a discussion on the Zenith List here about a model-specfic lists. I created a web-based survey form to poll all of the members of the Zenith-List to see what the consensus was on adding model specific lists. For the Zenith-List, the over-whelming response from the poll was to keep it a single list. Might be different for the Kolb-List. If people are interested, I will setup a poll for the Kolb-List this weekend. Please, let's not fracture the discussions across two different systems! Please let me know how I can make this operation serve your needs better. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Hauck" <jhauck@elmore.rr.com> Thanks Matt: Kolb people do not segregate themselves by model at our flyins, especially the Kolb Homecoming the last weekend of September every year. In my last email I stated the Kolb List traffic had been slim to none lately. On one occassion, a few days ago, I did not receive a msg from the Kolb List for more than 24 hours. For a little while, thought I had been ambushed. I have no reason nor desire to stop anyone from starting up a new List. That is each individual's choice. However, most of us on this List have special experience with most of the models discussed here. If I can be of assistance to anyone on the US, FS, and MKIII, or any of the other remaining Kolb models I have had the opportunity to fly, please let me know. One of the primary reasons for this List is to help others before they experience the same mistakes of those who have gone before them. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Rusty" <13brv3c@bellsouth.net> IF you are still fighting violent engine shake at startup (important: assuming you have the HD starter and slipper clutch already), then try the following: TURN OFF one of your Mag circuits instead of turning them both on like you usually do. Once the engine starts, THEN turn it on! (RD) Thanks for the comments Jon. I've got a lot to learn about the 912S on the SS that I'm rebuilding. I do know that it's a violent beast if you don't get the rpm up immediately on startup. I saw a service bulletin about the HD starter option, but don't have any idea what a "slipper clutch" is at the moment. (RD) I still REALLY want to use a rotary engine on the SS, but can't bring myself to abandon a 230 hour 912S engine that's already been mounted. Sure hope no one makes me an offer I can't refuse for the engine :-) Cheers, Rusty (gotta go visit the local single rotor guru)

Seal-Send-Time: Fri, 10 Dec 2004 18:08:05 -0500 --> Kolb-List message posted by: "H MITCHELL" <mitchmnd@msn.com> My solution to the EIS switch location was to make a small console and panel located on the floor board just ahead of the dual control linkage. I did not locate the switches under the left seat because I wanted to be able to see them. Also I did not want to extend the wires to another location because splicing just adds to the number of connections in the system and reduces the overall reliability. The master switch and Mag switch were also located on the new panel. The photo below shows the new location. The best part is that it works. Thats fine, but for me the only instrument I want to be able to reach is my EIS. An alternative to extending the panel is to install remote buttons for the EIS, which could be placed right below the seat. I believe Grand Rapids Technologies can set you up with this system. I personally have not yet done this, but I believe there are others that have - perhaps someone could report back with a price and their level of satisfaction regards, erich weaver --------------------------------

You've accomplished an amazing feat - You've managed to make the winter last twice as long as it normally would because you've got a neat little bird waiting for spring. How about some pics. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Bill Woods" <kolbpilot@msn.com> Rusty & Richard, The difference in SS landing gear was the axle fitting. I put 2 calipers on each side for added braking and the axle bolt was ripping the axle attach tube. I showed this to TNK and they made me a special gear with thicker bottoms. The first buyer of the SS was from Texas. He landed in strong winds and let the right wing and stab contact the runway scraping the covering away. I bought it back at a reduced price and recovered and repainted right wing & stab to keep it from looking patched up. Yes it was a pain in the rear to paint back all those colors but I couldn't have it looking patched up. I never repaired anything in the tail but heard through the grapevine that the second buyer ground looped it. I loved that little plane but was starting to do aerobatics it wasn't designed for so sold it and bought a Decathlon. Bill Woods P.S. I'll try to post a photo when it was new.

(RD) One sign of a good company is that they learn, and improve their products. I just received two new gear legs from TNK, and you'll be happy to know that they seem to have adopted the heavy duty axle fitting as standard. Richard, FYI, the axle fitting tube is 1" OD on the later gear. The first buyer of the SS was from Texas. He landed in strong winds and let the right wing and stab contact the runway scraping the covering away. I bought it back at a reduced price and recovered and repainted right wing & stab to keep it from looking patched up. (RD) Thanks for the rest of the history Bill. Sounds like the plane's had a hard life, and it makes me feel that much better about taking it all apart to rebuild it. I've already found a couple broken welds in the fuselage cage, so I'll get to play with my TIG welder some more :-) I loved that little plane but was starting to do aerobatics it wasn't designed for (RD) Shame on you :-) Thanks for testing it so thoroughly. That's one of the reasons I'm very comfortable removing the BRS. (RD) Thanks again for the comments Bill. Always good to hear from you. Cheers, Rusty

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Rusty" <13brv3c@bellsouth.net> Greetings, As stupid as it sounds, I'm thinking seriously about selling the 912S that came on the SS I bought, but I have no idea what a fair price would be. It's about 5 years old, with about 230 hours on it, and would sell with the Titan exhaust, oil tank, oil cooler, radiator, throttle and choke linkages, and any hardware used to mount it on the SS. For now, let's assume there would be no prop included, since the Warp Drive is already being listed on E-bay, and I can exchange my new IVO if needed. What would be a fair price to ask? Thanks, Rusty (yes, I may actually BE crazy) Do not archive
