Hi,
I think I shall have to disagree with that.
Sailplane wings, which without doubt are the most efficient wings in the
air are long and narrow.. This gived the exact opposite of your suggestion,
a very extended leading edge to main spar area.
The area from the main spar to the trailing edge is kept to a minimum .

it with engine running. If the front wheel is on the ground you are within

just as a matter of interest, what non technical plane building books do you
read in th States.?
Over here I would think that a book by Kermode called `Flight without
formula` is read by everyone from aero modellers to home aircraft builders.

Reckon we did the ultralight thing a little different on this side of
the pond. ;-)>>
Hi John,
aint that the truth!
I suspect that like us your ultralights grew out of hang gliders with little
engines screwed on.
We managed quite well for a while building and flying without interference
but then there was a series of well publicised accidents and the CAA stepped
in.
Luckily Ann Welch, a long serving and well respected member of the British
Gliding Association got imvolved and managed to get the same autonomy for
the fledgling ultralight community that the Gliding Assoc had managed to
retain.
This gave permission for us to get on with our own organisation as long as
we kept our respective noses clean. This has worked well and I think that
since the introduction of `Section S` which laid down a standard for build
quality and specified what an ultralight is in law there have been no
structural failures.
We have never had the freedom to build and fly whatever we liked that you
seem to have in your experimental category.
I am not sure if that is good or bad!!!!!!

Hi, over here it would probably depend on the assesment of your ability made
by the Inspector during the build process.
If he sees that your work is of good quality he will probably accept your
figures. If not....., after all he is signing the machine off as flyable.
All ultralights here are supposed to be weighed at their annual every five
years to ensure that it does not exceed the MTOW which defines an ultrlight
in law. People add, radios,spats,extra tanks etc., and if you are not within
the law then the insurers will wriggle out of paying for any accident.

Yes, there is a great deal of difference in the amount of freedom
Americans have compared to other countries. We are fortunate people,
that can never forget the price of that freedom.

The absolute "Bible" of aircraft weight and balance is
"Aircraft Weight & Balance Control", by Henri Georges
D'Estout... If you want to know everything there is
to know about aircraft W&B, curl up in front of the
fire and read this book...
The FAA has their own W&B book, "Aircraft Weight and
Balance Handbook", FAA-H-8083-1... It will instruct
you how to perform a W&B on a 747, although the theory
is the same for a Kolb...

What a rare bragging right you have!
No wonder you are flying a Kolb now - the Curtis Wright Jr is one of the
earliest examples of "our type of airplane configuration" that was ever
produced. (High wing, tailwheel, mid-mounted pusher engine)
Homer obviously admired the design also.

Yes John, of course you are right as ,long as the neck you are risking with
your experiments is your own
Perhaps if we fall out of the sky we are more likely to fall on someone than
you are.
Have a good Xmas looking out on your lake and flying in sunny skies and
think of me in Scotland, definitely non flying but a roaring fire,
comfortable arm chairs, a little dancing and a couple of drams of Tallisker
ot Glen Livet. Then home to get my first look at the Kolb kit to start off
2005.

I have your vote for the 13-15 May Dennis K.
I picked the 20-22 May to allow several Kolbs to make the SWRFI Fly-in on
the weekend after Mother's day and allow still not be out over the Memorial
Day weekend.
The 20-22 May also lets the weather get a week better before some of will
have to cross some mountains known to have WX issues earlier in the month.
I still purpose that we hold our 3rd Annual Kolb Gathering at Monument
Valley, UT (UT25) on May 20-22, 2005 and will keep a tally of what the
possible attendees prefer.
