Hi All:
Sorry about the belated holiday greetings. Was out of town and out of
communication. The sat provider would not let me join in the internet
and email fun, and RR roaming telephone hookup said I was using the
wrong handle or pass word. Never did get it straightened out, so
watched kid shows on TV with 2.5 and 5 year old girls, and three
Doberman Pinchers.
Spent Xmas in Roanoke, VA, where it never did get warm enough to get
outside. Now I am back home with my trusty old computer. Weather is
getting good enough to get a little flying in the afternoons.
So........Merry Xmas everyone, and a very Happy New Year. Hope
everyone has a safe and enjoyable year, get lots of building and
flying done, and make it out to Monument Valley in May for the Third
Annual Unplanned/Unorganized Kolb Flyin.

Hi Charlie,
I'm driving the Mark 2 also and I understand the reluctance to drive it too far.
The airplane itself is beautiful and I KNOW I can trust her to do what I expect
of her. But my Rotax is tempermental (503 SCSI) at the moment and that's
another story altogether. I only wish there was something in the 50hp range
that was 4 cycle and weighed only 90 lbs and didn't cost an arm and a leg. I
swear, if somebody out there developed something like a half VW that developed
50 hp and didn't require a second mortgage on the house to obtain, it would be
one of the best things to hit the ultralight market in a long while. It's what
the Mk2 screams for...probably lots of other ships too.
Anyway, have fun on your trip and stay in touch. I don't hear a lot about Mk2's
anymore and enjoy hearing from the guys driving "antiques" like mine. Maybe
we ought to consider our own fly-in somewhere in the middle of the country sometime.
I would really enjoy hanging with aging aviators like myself (60) who
have been flying Kolbs for many years and have all the experience and stories
to tell. Would make for one heck of a campfire one night...even if only a few
of us showed up.

around $6500 without all the "and-ups". Flightstar has decided to offer
it on their two place. I'm sure it would do as well on a MkII.

If I am not mistaken that is exactly the type of "people" that show up at
Monument Valley. You ought to try it, there is generally one of each type at
any gathering of Kolbers, not only that, but most of us are old "farts" as
well.

I believe Rotax had a sale on 503's until the end of the year. About $2500
IIRC. Just my luck to be a bit poor

Last fall, Chuck Sluscarzyk (?sp?) was in Johnson City for the annual
indoor free flight (model) Nats and I talked to him about the HKS, as they
are optional on Hawks. He said it was a bulletproof engine and the more
they used them, the better they liked them. He had a couple that were
getting close to 1,000 hours with no problems.
He said they had more oomph than a good 503, but less than a 582 in terms
of useful power. He did not think I would be happy with my MKIII if it had
an HKS on it, but he said a two seat Hawk worked good with one, and he
thought a FSII was a natural for one.
So a MKII ought to really be great with one.

My memory is definitely not the photographic type, but the Old Kolb
assessment that I recall was that it was close to a 503. It would climb a
