Hi Kevin, I worked on the TNK factory amphib float for about a year. Last
July Norm Labhardt flew them on the factory MKIIIX several times. Despite the
fact that they performed well the project was put on hold pending funding. With
the tragic loss of Norm and the factory Xtra this hold has deepened. However
there are other options, check out Frank Reynen and his Full Lotus. Also Czech
Float has an impressive amphib combo.
Take a look at www.tnkolbaircraft.com and you will see the FireFly on Czech
Floats.
My advise is to take a hard look as to if you need amphib. There is a high
price to pay for full amphib in weight, cost and complexity. The folding ability
of the Kolb work well with the concept of keeping your Kolb at home and
launching it at a lake when you want to fly. I am currently flying the FireFly
on
Czech Floats and I would be happy to tell you what I am learning. The
configuration on the FireFly would also work on the MKIII.

In re off-airport landings -- as I understand it, they're legal if 1.
SAFE, and 2. "with landowner's permission "
Of course behind a diner or gas station there's no way to know who owns
the land but if you don't do crazy things there's usually no problem.
We used to have breakfast-flights of 8 or 10 aircraft; in the winter
we'd land on a frozen lake next to a coffee shop. Great fun . Someone
took a picture that showed 7 planes, one of them a light twin. The
Friendlies saw this and passed the word "CUT IT OUT!" so of course we
did. But they were warning us,
in a nice way, that they were ready to crucify someone if we didn't
quit.
I'm still not sure how or even if it was illegal, but they're in charge
and they know it.

Don't know if this qualifies as advice or not, but anyway -
Have had one lesson on floats, a Maxair Drifter with only a single carb 503
to push it. Was at Sebring Florida, a number of years ago. The
owner/instructor had installed two Full Lotus floats and a quick removable
landing gear. It could be lowered, raised, or left behind at the waters edge.
Anyway, what he told me at the time was that without the landing gear
along, the airplane flew a lot better. So he chose the minor inconvenience
of removing and leaving the gear behind when ever he flew off water in
exchange for better performance. Made sense, the Drifter with floats and no
landing gear was not bad, climb rate two up with the 46 hp 503 was probably
about 400' a minute, plenty good enough for flat country, and it had no
trouble getting off the water.
Don't know how they compare with other floats, but the Full Lotus's gave a
cushy ride across a big lake with the sort of small waves you get from an 8
-10 mph wind.

Kevin,
As Steve and Richard indicated, the Full Lotus floats have several
advantages that I like.
I have the Full Lotus amphib setup on the MKIII/912.
see www.webcom.com/reynen
I mostly fly from the water and leave the wheels behind unless I visit some
nearby grass airport
You do not indicate what engine is on the MKIII you want to equip with
floats.
I used to have a 582 but switched to the 912 for better range and
performance with two up.
e-mail me at frank-reynen@ix.netcom.com or call 408-253-2149 if you want
more info.
BTW; my MKIII will go up for sale in about a month from now.

Guys,
I finally got to talk to Virgil, the manager of the Tribal Park. I explained
that many of the Ultralight people had in fact paid the admission to the park
because we toured it after we flew over it. I also commented (not threatened)
that some of us questioned their authority to charge for using airspace under
FAA control. He was polite and did not comment on the FAA question but stated
that they charge everyone $5 per day per person and could not give us a group
rate or reduction or anything. He also commented that they charge some flyers
(balloonist, etc.) $50 to fly over their land. I didn't understand his
explanation but didn't pursue it. In talking to him, it occurred to me that we
ain't gonna win this one and arguing would just cause pissed off feelings.
As far as I'm concerned, this is where it ends. I'm going to go to the Tribal
Park and pay my two or three day's fees in advance. Of course, every one can
do as he/she likes but my thought is that if I have an engine out, I'd sure
like to have a piece of paper that says I've paid when I'm trying to get my plane
out. Also, I asked how they could monitor the flying. He replied that he
lives only 1/4 mile from the airstrip and sees what is going on there. Sure,
I guess we can fly without paying (whether or not their charge is "legal") and
flip them a bird as we fly by, but then what have we won if we come back next
year and find that they've petitioned the FAA to make it a 2,000' minimum altitude?
Also, I remind you that there is no connection between Goulding's and the Tribal
Park. They are two separate and distinct businesses.

AzDave and all,
Dave, thanks for the leg work. We will just have to do whatever we have to
do to feel comfortable while flying in that ugly part of the southwest.
So far I have a list of 25 people and 11 airplanes that have expressed their
interest in the 2005 Kolb Gathering at Monument Valley.
If you might be at MV and haven't sent me your intentions, please do.

Hi Gang
Pilots here at Smoketown Pa. Airport pre flight their aircraft by
draining all fuel sumps. This means for all practical purposes no water
in the fuel. They are still susceptible to carb icing because of
moisture in the atmosphere and temperature combine to cause it. That is
why on down wind you pull on carb heat. I fly a 447 Fire Fly and had the
engine slow throttled back on down wind. By opening and closing the
throttle a few times it cleared. So don`t always blame water in the fuel
which causes more fuel starvation than carb icing.
Just my two cents.

On the subject of wing fold pins, I welded a 3/4 inch
bolt to the end of each pin and use a threaded rod
connector mounted on the end of an aluminiun tube to
insert the pins into the horizontal hole. Once the
pin is in, just unscrew rhe rod, On the other end of
the tube is mounted a hook that I use to pull the pins
out. Al Bumhoffer, Elkton, MI, Firestar II

Dear Lister,
Please read over the Kolb-List Usage Guidelines below. The complete
Kolb-List FAQ including these Usage Guidelines can be found at the

Thank you,

Kolb-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Kolb-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Kolb-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Kolb-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Kolb-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.
