Richard (Pike),
Where do you live in N.E. TN? The wife and I spent this last weekend
looking for land to buy in that area. We both love it up there and are
thinking of relocating there. Beautiful country.

Richard,
I'm having the same problem. I found a picture of a US folded on a trailer
behind a brown and station wagon. Is that yours? It, obviously, folds on
the rear spar. I would appreciate any drawings or I can work from pictures.

Just east of Kingsport.
The grass strip behind the house is here:
http://www.airnav.com/airport/3TN0
It is great flying country, numerous little grass strips, 4 seasons, good
cost of living, mild summers and winters, gorgeous springs and falls - you
could do a lot worse. It even has a great little country church with a
preacher who flies a Kolb...

That N number was reserved by the individual that got killed.
However, there is no aircraft registration for it, so can not tell
what kind of aircraft it was for sure.
Maybe when the NTSB report is published it will indicate type of
aircraft.

good idea Terry but i vote for a differentweekend since the Father's Day fly-in
at Wellsvillehapppens at the same time. obviously this would createsome conflict
since we couldn't enjoy both events atthe same time. your right about Wellsville
being agood place to assemble but i still cast my vote forHomer's being
on a different weekend then the fly-inat Wellsville. .... tim (FireFly at Shoestring)I'll
ditto what Tim suggests...Once I get my FF flying this spring, I'd
like to make as many of the local fly-ins as weather time permit. So I'd rather
enjoy a full day at Homer's again at Wellsville, rather than trying to
hussle to both at the same time.do not archiveBob PFF - Fogelsville, PA

Subject: | Wing folding & Misc UltraStar Mods |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Richard Swiderwski" <rswiderski@earthlink.net>
Dale,
This is what worked well for me: Assume wings are folded. Remove
vertical bolt from universal joint. Have an 1/8 inch stiff wire about 12"
Long & bent into a hook on each end. Slide wing out of upper frame & allow
it to pivot down, place top end of hook in upper frame & bottom hook into
u-joint of wing. It is now hanging low enough to put into trailer or garage.
What makes this practical is you do not put the original bolt back in.
Instead, you take an AN hinge bolt of appropriate length with the threaded
tip slightly tapered & a hole drilled in the end for a safety clip. The tab
on the end of the hinge bolt allows you to grasp & hold it as you put a wing
nut on finger tight. The taper allows the bolt to find its way back in &
allows the wing nut to quickly & easily start. Now when next fold you wing
You simply remove clip remove hinge bolt; & hang wing on its
hanger. Do same On other wing; bungee top & bottom to each other & fuselage
with a couple of appropriately placed pads; then using a 4" wide piece of
soft fabric, wrap & tie back of wings so they can not come off their
bracket. When reassembling, & you have u-joint ready to receive hinge bolt,
I used a WD-40 coated tapered pin that I pushed thru the U-joint to align
the 4 holes so the threads of the bolt will not "file" the holes bigger with
repeated use. This extra step of lowering the front of the wing really only
adds a couple of minutes the setup.
On similar note, the fretfully annoying elevator pin will soon
become a forgotten nightmare if you just throw that long pin away! Again,
take an AN hinge bolt that is long enough that the unthreaded portion would
extend about 3/8" beyond the elevator mechanism & in this area you would
drill a hole for the clip. Beyond the hole you would taper the hinge bolt to
a long taper that removes any of the threads so it is smooth & will find its
way thru the elevator assembly & self align all the parts without any
necessary cussing. The hinge bolt's tab allows you to twist & push with
ease. I liked this so much I used this tapered pin concept on the rear wing
drag strut as well.
As John H mentioned the earlier UltraStars did not have a steel
collar in the inboard end of the 5" wing spar. When heavy aileron input
occurs, the reaction is to put twist on the spar & when it twisted the end
of the spar would go oval. This "going oval" allowed the wing to twist with
ease & of course it is twisting opposite of aileron input which cancelled
the effect of the aileron. This flexible twisting of the wing not only made
role control mushy, but it also became a method of storing energy & feeding
back, which in some cases, went on to become flutter. I corrected this by
clamping a steel 1" ring around the outside edge of the spar & riveting to
spar & riveting an X piece onto the collar. This is done with minor fabric
cut & patching. I also cut a small hole in wing & riveted a steel brace to
center of drag strut & I believe the rib flange that goes around the spar.
This is not really a necessary fix as it didn't fail until Dennis sawed off
the stops, put the UltraStar into a 90mph dive & pulled out as hard & fast
as he could. If you plan on doing this you definitely will want to make
this modification so that the plane can break somewhere else at a higher
G-force.
I did a bunch of other mods to the beloved UltraStar, like an
adjustable pitch tab; flaperons; gear box redrive; 60" p-tip prop; bungee
gear high rise suspension; 3/4 enclosed fuselage; seat tank; enlarged
elevator cable pulleys that eliminated the 90 degree bend where fraying
occurred; adding a few gussets & braces to strengthen fuselage for rough
field landing; & removing all the slop out of the control system.
Boy what ever got into me to sell that wonderful bird?! Enjoy
yours, she's one of Kolb's best!
Richard Swiderski

Richard,
I'm having the same problem. I found a picture of a US folded on a trailer
behind a brown and station wagon. Is that yours? It, obviously, folds on
the rear spar. I would appreciate any drawings or I can work from pictures.

Yep, RC cola use to be the best until they changed the formula. I miss
it. Coke has done the same thing. Back in 95 I was visiting Brazil once
in a while for business, they still had the old formula Coke and in the
bottle too. Boy was that good. I can't understand why Coke keeps trying
to change what has been successful for them. Today I can't tell much
difference between Pepsi and Coke, there both like sweetened flavored
water, no longer has any punch. No flying today - still trying to rain.
