I'm intermittently on line, so will take advantage to break my un-accustomed
silence. Never thought that *I* would be referred to as "Silent" anything.
:-) It took some really nasty Un-Silent screaming to get that useless Time
Warner off their duffs to get even partial operation again. They missed
their appointment today, too, but they're sure not shy about jerking me
around on the billing. Nearly 2,000 messages downloaded after they got me
online after 2 1/2 weeks off. What a pain.
As always, a visit from Tom & Betty was highly enjoyable, an excuse to try
some new restaurants, and show off this currently pleasant - and amazingly
green - desert. Don't try this in the summer. The visit kinda got me going
again, too, and I'll try to maintain the momentum. Finished up my builder's
manual yesterday, will download the FAA forms, and will begin patching the
wing tomorrow. Thanks for the boost, Tom.
It WAS good to see them, and I'll return the favor next summer, but in the
meantime, it was sad to see Tom still having a lot of trouble with his hind
hoofs. I forget how many pins he said were in his feet (12 ??) but he's
still got some healing to do. Betty had a nasty break on her left ankle,
and other injuries, that fortunately seem to be healing well. They showed
me their photo album of the crash, and it was sobering. They are 2
extremely lucky people, believe me. Seems incredible that it's already been
a year since their crash. Good luck, guys, and thanks for the visit.

Mike,
I hate to see people create their own problems trying
to fix something that ain't broke.
After looking at your nose skid picture, I think you
may be creating a problem. Have you lifted the tail to
the flying position (9 degree) and measured the ground
clearance?

Dale,
ZDE in Indiana has Cog belt drives for the UL 202 but in 2.5 to 1 ratio.....I
use either a 3 blade ground adjustable IVO or Warp....A 2 blade seems
to make a resonance that you can't get rid of and seems to cavitate due to the
higher pitch recquired for the 50 inch diameter on the Ultrastar....took a long
time and $$$$ to figure out but now I have a hot rod....too fast ! Check
Photo Share and I have a picture posted of the set-up or I can send you one...

thats it.
That is not so true. As the manufacturer of my airplane, I use the
guidelines given to be by the kit manufacturer and either confirm that their
numbers are correct or determine my own numbers>>
Hi John,
very nice holiday thanks, although the weather could have been better.
I think this is the basic difference between our two systems. Your
`Experimental` would appear to mean just that. No holds barred. In the UK no
plane type or kit type can be marketed unless it has been cleared for
safety, structurally and for flying characteristics, by the CAA (through the
powers held by the Popular Flying Association or the British Microlight
Aircraft assoc). Also in the case of ultralights, it must conform to the
legal specification of AUW, stall speed and wing loading.
The kit will be inspected during construction by a Licensed Inspector as
often as he thinks fit. This will depend on how far he trusts you to do the
work properly. He is employed, but working unpaid, by the PFA or the BMAA.
The Inspector will `sign off` the various stages of construction as laid
down in the `build book` You will not be allowed to depart from the kit
manufacturers plans in any major respect and thus your a/c will (and must)
conform to the C of G limits laid down by the manufacturer. After
construction either you or the Inspector will complete a flight test and the
numbers must agree with the CAA numbers.
The original test a/c will have also been tested for noise level, an actual
flight test, using a particular engine. It will be assumed that your a/c,
with the same engine, will be OK. If you change the engine then a noise
certificate for the new combination must be issued.
This is the situation at the moment with my Extra. It is cleared for use
with the 582 only. I am building away hopefully in the belief that Kiwimick,
the UK and European Dealer, will have built, tested and obtained approval
for using the Jabiru by the time I have finished construction.
This system has kept a number of very desirable designs off the UK market as
putting a new design through the system is very expensive and time
consuming. On the other hand it has stopped the importation of some very
dodgy designs which although they looked nice were pretty lethal in the
hands of the low time pilot.
There is no doubt that our system has stultified new developments, and
there is some talk of introducing an `Experimental` category over here, but
I can think of only two types which have been grounded since the
introduction of the `Flying Flea` in the 1930`s.
The `Flea` itself was dangerous because it could get into a `deep stall` and
wouldn`t pull out.The CAA Certificate was withdrawn after several accidents.
All Thrusters were grounded a few years ago because they all had so many
`bits` added, radios, spats, selfstarters, batteries etc they were all over
weight and no longer ultralights, and the Shadow, which has had an
unblemished safety record over many years was suddenly perceived to be
dangerous because the collapse of the undercarriage could cause rupture of
the fuel tank with the attendant fire risk. I think someone had watched a
film of the Concorde accident. The uindercarriage has now been redesigned
and Shadows are flying again.
I envy the latitude which you enjoy but I am comforted to know that when I
get into my Xtra someone somewhere has given it a good wringing out and the
wings are unlikely to fall off.
Incidentally the wings and tail feathers of the Xtra are complete, cage
fitted out, fuse tube mated to the cage and she is up on her own wheels.
Unfortunately it seems unlikely that I shall be unable to fit spats because
of the weight.
Swings and roundabouts.
Cheers

Could you explain this for a poor southern yank?
Hi Bryan,
Nothing to stop you doing your own thing. If it is an ultralight the max
weight is 450 kilos. the weight calculation must include 2 crew at 90 kilos
each and enough fuel for an hours flight at full throttle. To achieve the
required stalling speed the Xtra cannot be anything like the 450kg max..
Kiwi is in trouble here at the moment because to achieve the required
stalling speed, the wing must be made more efficient or the empty weight
must come down. We are trying to achieve the first by adding Vortex
Generators which we hope will give a stalling speed down by 5 mph and
trimming the weight wherever we can. Hence. No spats.Unfortunately VG`s on
an Xtra are not an `approved modification` so that has to be addressed
first.
Generally once the `type approval` is granted the system works fairly well
and if you want to incorporate a mod. a word with the engineering dept. of
the PFA is sufficient. The main problem is that the engineering deptartments
of both the PFA and the BMAA are busy and mods, certificate renewals etc
take much longer than they should. Some department chiefs delegate and allow
others in the dept. to sign things off, some do not.
Designing and building a non ultralight a/c is a matter of getting the
engineering quality and design passed by the PFA engineering dept.
I am not an authority but I think that is the way it works. In the end you
cannot fly an aircraft with an engine in it without a Certificate of
Airworthiness and that is issued by the PFA through delegated powers from
the CAA so naturally no one is going to take the responsibilty for issuing a
C of A unless they are confident that the wings will stay on.
Cheers

I just downloaded the 1930 Howard
Hughes film Hells Angels>>
Hi,
I remember seeing that film at the camp cinema (hah!) when I was posted to
the wilds of Yorkshire in 1947.
I believe it was the only film Ben Lyons made as he was always making
allusions to it when his radio (and later TV) show Life with the Lyons in
which he starred with Bebe Daniels to great acclaim in the 50`s.
Wasn`t there a story that the buyer of the planes for that film got such a
good deal, one free for every ten he bought or similar, that he acquired
nearly every spare plane on the market?
Cheers

I've had enough humility building with that stupid wheel. Too many
times at public airports if I put too much rudder input on the ground, I'd
just turn & helplessly turn in circles, mostly this happened as I would line
up for take-off in a stiff cross wind. Before she flies again I aim to fix
that full swivel break away. I haven't taken it apart yet, if you or others
have the fix already, how about saving us some embarrassment?
----------------------
(RD)
Hey, no extra charge for the overswivel wheel Richard :-)
I don't believe you can modify the wheel assembly to break out at a
different angle, but there might be a difference between manufacturers. Kolb
didn't sell the full swivel wheel when I installed the one on your SS. That
wheel came from Spruce, and was bored out to fit the spring. The wheel on
the current SS came with the kit I believe, but it appears to be the exact
same wheel that you have. The wheel that comes from Van's is different,
which might explain why I've never had a problem setting up an RV tailwheel.
I made a note to check the breakout angle to see it it's different from the
one on the SS. If not, then it must just be a geometry issue. Perhaps the
Van's wheel has a longer control arm, so the wheel just doesn't turn as far
when you turn the rudder. I'll check and let you know.
Cheers,
Rusty (remind me if I forget)

I have the optional full swivel tail wheel that New Kolb sells now. I had to
do some trial and error to get mine right. When I 1st installed it the wheel
wouldn't swing enough to break to full swivel. I then lengthen the chains
between the rudder and the tail wheel bell crank enough that the wheel would
break loose at full rudder stop with just some one wheel braking. This
worked ok till I ran into some high cross winds a few times. I found the
springs that came with the kit would stretch enough so that wheel would
swivel and break loose even with full opposite rudder. I had to ride one
wheel brake with full opposite rudder to taxi straight. Later I drilled the
tail wheel bell crank with extra holes so that I could adjust the ratio
between the rudder bell crank and the tail wheel bell crank. Then I changed
to compression springs and adjusted the chains taunt. It is now adjusted so
that the tail wheel will not break loose till I'm right at the limit of
right or left rudder. With the chains taunt I get very precise directional
control and when the wind blows I can push in some opposite rudder and the
tail wheel will never break to swivel. Granted the wind may push a skidding
tail wheel around a bit but you will not be doing those 360 plus degree
turns. Oh one more thing that tail wheel bell crank is made from some real
hard steel you may need to buy a special drill bit to drill through that
nasty stuff.

Hi Bryan,
<<, what are spats?>>
I had no idea that anyone called them anything else, but then I am
incredibly oldfashioned and tend to continue to use out of date words and
phrases long after everyone else has moved on. They are the streamlined mud
collectors that you fit over your planes wheels.
One of the 30`s Miles aircraft (the Hawk?) had a non retractable but fully
enclosed streamlined undercarriage which was described as `trousered`.
I wondered after I replied to your query if it was the phrase `swings and
roundabouts` which required explanation, considering that you don`t have
`roundabouts` only `carousels`, but I must have guessed wrongly

I guess you would have to remember the "maggie & jigs" cartoon strip
to know what spats were. Maybe even Major Hoople?
A necessary accoutrement for the fashionable male.
Called wheel pants here.
They look classy but you're better off streamlining the gear legs.
Would the legs of the DeHavilland DH89A Dragon Rapide qualify as
"trousers"?
(a fabulous looker, that)
I thought you referred to traffic circles as roundabouts.
Boston still has plenty of them.

Hello to all on a miserable and rainy NE Georgia day. I was looking through some

On a windless, beautiful day, Wednesday, September 1, Roger Peterson of Sweeney,
Texas, did something he hadn't done in 17 years: he flew as pilot in command
of his Piper J-3 Cub, thanks to the sport pilot/light-sport aircraft (SP/LSA)
rule going into effect that day.
"About two years ago when it looked like sport pilot was coming in, I went
and bought a 1940 J-3," he said. "And so I've been flying with an instructor
the past couple of years. Last April it looked like it (the final rule) was imminent
so I started building a PA-11 replica. I completed it this past April
so now I am legal in both of them.
"I really appreciate the effort you guys (EAA) put in to bring this thing
off."
Peterson, 66, grew up on a farm in Iowa and started flying in 1954 when a
neighbor down the road offered flight time in his Cessna 120 in exchange for
shoveling manure in his barn. "I took my credit out in flying time," he said.
In the early 1960s, Peterson got his private ticket and bought a J-3 and later
transitioned to a C-172, which he flew for many years. In the 1980s he sold the
Cessna and bought an Aeronca Champ, which he flew until 1987. That year he quit
flying after undergoing bypass surgery. He never went for his special issuance
medical, although his doctor, also a pilot, said he would not have a problem
getting one.
Peterson's wife, Alverna, started flying in 1965, "but since she always flew with
me she never got her ticket," Roger explained, and hadn't flown since he quit.
Now Alverna is in the process getting her private ticket, possibly in the
next several weeks. "We were going to use that as a backup if the sport pilot
didn't come through," he said.
His son, Craig, who helped build the PA-11 replica, is also in the process of getting
his ticket as well. "We're all having a lot of fun flying."
Just last year, Peterson installed a grass strip on his land, 08XS, Peterson Field.
"Of course, if sport pilot hadn't come through, I'd have a couple of airplanes
for sale and a strip put back to pasture."
He said he felt nothing different in his first takeoff as PIC. "I've been flying
with the instructor, so the flying part was just another time off in the J-3,"
Peterson said. "It seems we've been waiting for so long, there was just a feeling
of finally.
"Man, I'm just glad you guys went through all the effort."
Now, it doesn't come right out and say it, but I have to "assume" (I know the dangers
there) that he lost his medical due to the bypass surgery since it says
that "He never went for his special issuance Medical,......"
Referring to the recent discussions on the list, I thought that he'd have to pass
a current physical? Where am I going wrong on this?

what are the chances that I'd have it in the air before Vamoose? ;

Well Doug,
Since the article says "he quit flying after undergoing bypass surgery. He
never went for his special issuance medical," we have to assume that he let
his FAA medical expire. He would only have to get a "special issuance
medical" if he applied for another Class 3 medical or higher.

(RD) I think the rule says unless your medical has been revoked, or denied.
When you have some sort of medical condition like this, you know you can't
legally fly unless you report this all to the FAA and jump through the
appropriate hoops. Technically, his medical was invalidated by the
condition, but never revoked or denied. In this case, he seems to have every
reason to believe that he could get his medical back, but chose not to.

weekends, what are the chances that I'd have it in the air before Vamoose?

I just received the prototype amphibious floats today that Kolb had on
their factory plane at Osk this last summer. I also received my new 912S. It
was snowing pretty hard and was cold so I didn't uncrate they. I'm about ready
to put on the long handles and the polar suit and go out to the hanger and uncrate
the floats. Worst than a kid at Christmas. Had a nice talk with Steve Boetto
Sat.(Float designer) Since the floats and plane together have never been
on water I will have a little testing to do. Really looking foward to this summer
looks like it will be a busy one.
Looks like I'm going to have to get my sea plane rating this summer. Does
any one know of some one around the Kansas,Oklahoma or Missouri area that
they would recommend.
