was wondering if anyone has any actual working knowledge of a swap from an
IVO three blade to a warp drive three blade prop on a SlingShot. Would like
imput. By the looks of the new KOLB legs, they are a cut down version of
the SlingShot legs. Gotta tell ya, if they are, they are strong and work
well. Ted Cowan. By the way, would anyone want to trade for the IVO with a
warp? What length of blade on the 582?

Wade,
The factory now shows 35 mph for stall in a Firestar.
If they have numbers for best glide or climb, I am not
aware of them.
But to get you in the "ball-park", here is my own
opinion:
The 35 mph is not unrealistic for a light Firestar
with a small windscreen. I am aware of a number of
Firestars that stall at around 38 to 40, like mine
does.
The Firestars that I have flown had the best climb
rate and lowest sink rate about 5 mph above stall.
Probably "best" not to fly at that speed, though.

Dear Friends,
It would be a "missed opportunity" in life if you do
not get a chance to know Mr. Hauck. While he may
seem a little gritty at times, he is always willing to
share, help and "infect" people with aviation. It is the
same endearing qualtiy my late husband had. I'm lucky
to be able to "class" him with Mr. Hauck. It is this love
of aviation why he posts to the list so much. I do think
many of you appreciate what John has to offer along
with myself and the entire sport. Keep up the good
work John.

I finally got around to measuring the break-out angle of the SS wheel, and
my Van's RV wheel. The RV measured 41 degrees, and the SS measured 43
degrees. Since these are rough eyeball type measurements, I think I can
conclude that there's no significant difference in the angle they break-out
at.
As another note of trivia, the RV spring looks to be about 5/8" (steel)
where the SS spring is 3/4" (aluminum). The RV tailwheels are less than
half the price of the "homebuilder special" wheels that Spruce sells, but
I'm not sure if there's enough meat on it to bore it out safely for the 3/4"
spring. The RV wheel assembly is all steel, where the Spruce assembly is
aluminum. The tailwheel on the current SS is sick, so it's going to need
some work, or more likely replacement with a Van's wheel.

Morning all, I just ordered my new 447 engine (that hurt a lot) but my
377 is available for sale. It has had all new seals and gaskets and
checked by D&F aviation would like to get enough for it and gas spent on
carrying it there and back. I ran it 2 weeks ago for about 10 mins. just
to get the lubrication going not even enough to dial carb back in
thinking $800.00 dollars it would put you in the air cheep. 803-233-1373

I have a 66 inch IVO that I took off of the float plane. I have a two blade
warp and a three blade kiev on order. I can't part with the ivo until I get
the other props in. I have to make sure that I have something on it for Sun n

Good point! I will post driving directions as well as the coordinates to Homer
and
Clara's farm when we get closer to that date. Homers field is on the sectionals
of
both Washington and New York. Look just northwest of Phila.
Lot's of time left for that. If I post them now they will be forgotten and will
need
to be done again. More info as we get near that time!

Hey Guys,
Finally gonna start my training for my tailwheel endorsement today....the
company that I'll be using is in the Feb edition of "GA NEWS" (page
35) Adventure Seaplanes.....
They have an Aeronca Champ , which is alot like the Kolb ....Stick , throttle
in left hand, slow flying , tailwheel .....And it should qualify as a "LIKE
AIRCRAFT" for the insurance co. (they required 5 hrs) It'll also take care of
my "biannual review" and after flying from their grass strip we'll move on to
a paved runway , which is the airport that I'll be flying my Firestar II 40 hrs
of flight testing from. (Anoka - Class D) So it'll get me familiar with the
area also....
They say about 6 hrs should do it....at $110 per hr that's not bad....
It's not easy to find this type of aircraft to train in.....they would even
let me Rent the plane, which is also hard to find.....
The fun begins at 2:30 , not long now....
Gotta Fly...

I find that I can't be quiet any longer. Every time I open the list I see someone
chastizing me for the way I feel in private. Many have said that the list
is not the place for such things....I agree as do the rules of the list regarding
non-kolb related posts. The way I feel and what I do or say off-list is
my business only. John Hauck took it upon himself to farword my off-list message

When I learned to fly at Iowa City Iowa in the 50s, I paid $10.00 an hour
dual and $8.00 an hour solo for a 1946 Champ. Times have changed a bit I
guess. The Champ is a great plane and easy to fly.

I was making $4.00 an hour as an A/E Mechanic before taxes. Good wage back

Just a quick note to let you all know I'm still breathing and building. I got the 912 mounted along with the warp and plumbed it for a test run.Engine started right up and runs wonderful. To bad the super trapp muffler is non usable because it's very quite. Moving onto making the flaps and rigging the controls. I paid $3-4/hr solo, and sometimes as much as $5 for dual end of '40 and
'41. I had a 6hr/night job inspecting HOT Ball canning jars at 65/hr.
In late '41 up to when I went flyin in the Navy '42 got $1/hr as arc
welder. In '49 with an EE I got $66/wk.

Hey Guys,
Almost didn't get the Aeronca started (hand proped)
Put a heater up to it and finally it started....
I did some practice taxi turn arounds....feeling the tailwheel
break loose and relocking it.....My instructor had to get out
once and give the tail a boost....( Oooops! )
What a first lesson...it was about an hour and a half , with
15 landings ....after doing alittle turning to get familiar with
the plane , we went right to landings on a grass field
( Forest Lake airstrip ) doing 3 point landings....Then we headed
over to a lake and did wheel landings on the Ice....Then we went
back to the grass strip and did wheel landings there....
I've never landed on neither before....another thing that
is "Like" my Firestar was the Aeronca had "Heel brakes"....
I didn't know that......So this looks like a pretty good plane
to train in to get ready for mine....
Just thought I'd share....

Champ about 5 yrs ago and loved it. Then I went and flew a friend's Piper
J5 and REally fell in love. 1st solo in the Champ was nearly as much fun as

I have a firestar 1985/86 vintage tha I am
re-building. I am a glider pilot and have flown power.
I am used to either flaps or spoilers for landing.
I was told by the guy I bought my firestar from that
it had flapperons on it but from the plans and parts I
have to work with I don't see anything that looks like
flapperons. I have seen disussion in this group about
flapperons. I sure don't know much about them.
Any info is appreciated.
