Hi Pollus,
lists always seem to have at least one member who sees slights and put downs
which are not obvious to the rest.
I thought the comments about John were well wide of the mark.
I am a new boy but I have never known John to be other than courteous and
helpful to anyone on the list. He is obviously a man of vast experience
which as far as I am aware he has always been willing to share freely. He
has never made a snide remark in any post which I have seen.
I have never met John although I hope to at Sun`nFun on the 14th
(particularly as he owes me a radio) but I shall be proud to shake his hand.
Perhaps we should put down our listmates untimely outburst to a touch of
indigestion, or the blues, or withdrawal syptoms because he hasn`t been
flying lately.
Cheers
Pat

Good Morning All
I have been busy trying to get the MK III X ready for my DAR visit in the next
month or so. I don't post my emails but I do read the posts everyday and have
learned a great deal about flying and building the Kolb airplanes.
I'm in the middle of installing my hydraulic brakes and have a question. Do you
use some kind of anti siege or teflon tape or thread dope when making up the
fitting to the wheel brake and the pedal cylinder ?
Thanks

Hi John,
Thanks for the greeting.
I am thinking of flying up to the MV fly'in. Where does everyone stay for the night?
Are trailer's welcome. Would like to talk more about the fly'in and I would
be happy to call you or you can call me at 520-574-1080.
Thanks for the help,

Hi Roger/Gang:
Welcome aboard.
You have chosen a nice airplane, I am sure.
Your Kolb MK III Classic can afford you vistas that few others will
ever enjoy. Here's Denali (Mt McKinley, highest point of the North
American Continent, 20,320 feet ASL) as viewed out the windscreen of
my MKIII Classic. After three flights and one trip by land, I finally
got a good look at THE Mountain.
Our Third Annual Monument Valley Unorganized/Unplanned Kolbe Flyin is
scheduled for the weekend of 20, 21, 22 May 2005, at Gouldings, MV,
UT. Some of us may get there earlier than 20 May. All depends on
wind, weather, and whims. We have had exceptional flyins in the past.
Some of the best folks ever gathered in one spot in the middle of the
desert. Would never trade my experiences from those first two flyins.
Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. We fly,
talk, eat, talk, sit around and talk until our jaws get tired.
Hope to see you there.

Morning Jim/Gang:
Can't speak for O'Brien Brakes because I have never installed them,
but on Hegar and Matco hydraulic brakes I used no dope or teflon tape
to secure fittings. Don't remember ever using anykind of thread
sealing compound for any kind of brakes, auto, motorcyle, etc.
Good luck with your DAR. A great feeling to be this close to
completion of your project.

Morning Roger/Gang:
I usually get to Gouldings on Thursday and will be there until Sunday
afternoon or Monday morning, depending on when we decide to depart for
Moab and parts north and west. We camp at Gouldings RV park and
campground. Everything one needs to survive very comfortably is
available to include an indoor swimming pool. Of course, we stay so
busy flying, talking, and eating, I don't know of anyone that has
christened the pool in the two years we have stayed there. Some of us
camp in tents, RVs, airplane trailers. Trailers are welcome. Premium
fuel is available across the road from the 4,000 ft combination dirt
and paved airstrip, which is one way in and one way out, unless you
fly a Kolb. Be careful. There is an 800 ft high vertical rock face
at the south end of the field. Gouldings has a great resturant and
lodge, plus grocery store, museum, and tours by the Navajos of
Monument Valley.

The North Florida weather finally slowed down so I arrived at the airport about
10 AM. The morning fog had cleared and the thermals were just getting started.
'Did a thorough preflight to make sure she was ready. It is still chilly here
(~50 Deg.) but she started at the first touch of the starter. This was a Wednesday
morning and I had the whole airport to my self.
A friend of mine and fellow Kolber (Mk3X/VW) is building a new strip on land somewhere
West of Bainbridge, GA and I wanted to see if he had finished. I flew
the home base pattern for three touch-n-goes, climbed to about 3,000 feet, circled
one time to make sure all was well, and headed North to Bainbridge. I monitored
the Bainbridge frequency for a few minutes and watched for any activity
in the pattern. There was nothing going on so I turned to the southwest and flew
along the Flint river at ~1,000 feet looking for the new strip. I found a
really nice looking strip about 2,000 by 100' but remembered hearing that there
was a Corps of Engineers field in this area that was closed a few years ago.
Sure enough there were trees 6' high scattered all over the touchdown area. What
a waste. I crisscrossed the area several times and concluded that my friends
field would need some more development, wherever it was.
By the time I returned to home base the traffic had picked up. There were two other
planes doing touch and goes and two more approaching the area looking for
airport advisories. I joined the crowd (?) and made a passable landing. Back
at the hangar I called my friend and he advised me that his crew were still pulling
stumps at the new site. No wonder I could not find it.
My plane performed flawlessly and the flying was still great,

If you are using the brass fittings and the nyla-flo lines, you probably
will not need to. My experience is that normally they will not leak, but
normal varies from case to case.
May not apply in your case, but here is a classic "How-to" from the Old
Master on installing aircraft brakes.

First I have heard of a new MKIIIX/VW. Anybody we know? Be sure and
post some GPS coordinates when you get them for his new airstrip.
That is right on my route of flight to TLH and Quincy.
Great to hear you MKIII is flying well. I have not flown in a while.
Doesn't look like I will today either. We are having Jack Hart winds,
25 mph, yesterday and today. Had to put tie downs on the John Deere
and the Case this morning to keep them from blowing away.
This time next month we will be at Sun and Fun. How many on the List
going to try and make it to Lakeland this year? We need to get
coordinated for a get together at the Kolb trailer and a BBQ dinner in
Lakeland. I will be flying down, so will be at the mercy of those
with wheels on something besides an airplane. Hope to be flying in
with John Williamson and Gary Haley. We will be camping with out
airplanes in the UL/Lt Plane tie down area. Ya'll come.

All the plastic brake lines I've seen use compression fittings that need no
sealers. The metal brake lines use a "doubled" flare on the tubing, and
again, no sealers are necessary. If you use standard tapered pipe fittings
anywhere in the system, you WILL need a sealer. Use a dope that is rated
for brake fluid. Above all - Do NOT use teflon tape. Used properly, teflon
tape is fine for the 1st installation, but when you dis-assemble the part
threads of it are left behind that can plug orifices later on, after
re-assembly. FWIW, manufacturers of commercial gas appliances will void
warranties if they find evidence of teflon tape in their equipment.

Morning all
adding to Larry's fine advice if you do use Teflon tape or dope on
anything only a small amount is needed to seal the threads, keep it away
from the end of the fitting as not to get it in your system and it's
only for pipe threads.

I'd buy the CD and probably the book, too. Add me to the list.
===========
I used to fly a paraglider. I no longer do; it's currently in its bag under
my desk, ready to go if I should ever change my mind. I quit due to the
hazard - I knew too many people who'd crashed and survived and barely
escaped being crippled. Finally one of the instructors went in and it took
months of therapy for him to walk again.
It remains one of the most fun aircraft I've ever flown. Perhaps the single
most fun.
It is a full-fledged aircraft that weighs about 40 pounds and packs up into
a backpack. I got started doing it after meeting a man who would fly during
his lunch hour. He worked near some cliffs over a beach, and would walk down
to the cliffs, set up, launch, fly for about 45 minutes, land, pack up and
return to work. It's the only type of aircraft I know of that you can do
that with.

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Edward Steuber" <esteuber@rochester.rr.com>
In response to Richard Pikes comments about the early days of ultralights
. The reason it took me so long to get into ultralights was my experience in
watching the "shenanigans" going on at a strip I was cropdusting out of when I
had just started my business at Palmers Field near Burt , New York ijn the mid
70's. There was a dealer that sold Wizard (weight shift) ultralights and trained
the new owners at the field . The collection of "clients " was less than
confidence inspiring....some normal people but a lot of what I would call "lunatic
fringe" and coming from me......" really puts em out there" ! But the lack
of basic aviation knowledge both of the new owners and the "instructors" was
what was really scary..There was one dude that flew a Quicksiver that had
installed wheelbarrow wheels for a landing gear cause he couldn't run (too fat)
and for courage he would go behind the hangar and smoke dope till he had the
correct amount for whatever personal aviation milestone he was going to accomplish
that day. Took all summer before he actually got airborne and crashed in
the woods off the end of the runway...When I got to him I found him sitting under
a tree smoking and marveling about what a beautiful sight it was as he fell
through the branches on his way down. Can you say "Flower Child "and yes he
was wearing a Ty dye t shirt...
I don't believe there was any longevity to any of the machines that were
flown at that airport for the entire season ....I got to see quite a few spectacular
wrecks with only a few broken bones . Most of the injuries were scrapes
and raspberries....went through a few first aid kits....got to know the local
ambulance driver by his first name...but the wrong impression I got was how poor
the machines were....Marginal , but not poor.
So until the sport evolved a little, my past experiences prejudiced me until
I finally came to my senses after seeing the Kolbs....

It seemed that he hit a thermal and his wing folded, at least you could hear

If it had been me you could have hard me screaming as well.

I have several friends that have used it for years & love it. It's
probably overkill for a Kolb unless you are looking at the obstructions
database, which is impressive.
The map looks just like a window over a sectional, so there's no
learning curve in interpreting what you see. If you decide to go with
the PDA option, then Anywhere Map gets my vote for software.
Bang for the buck: I got a Garmin Pilot III & 2 Lightspeed noise
cancelling headsets for less than the price of the Anywhere map system
about 4 years ago. I gave up color, big screen & obstructions to get the
headsets & cleaner installation (bluetooth wireless wasn't available then).

| Which gps offers the best bang for the buck? Thanks in advance!
| ~ Earl
Earl/All:
I have no experience with the PDA GPS. I do have several years
experience with the Garmin 196. I used it to fly to Alaska last
summer, plus other long flights in the lower 48. You can now buy one
for less than you can buy the PDA GPS. It is compatible for
air/land/sea. When I am not flying with it, I am using it to navigate
when I travel on the ground. Has a lot more capability than I am able
to use, but it is there if I need it. Bought mine from Aircraft
Spruce after a lot of shopping and comparing on the internet.
Take care,
john h

Hi Ed/Gang:
I retired from the Army in 1980. Three and a half years later I was
missing flying, but could not afford to get a civilian ticket, much
less rent an airplane. Saw a weight Shift Quicksilver on display at
Montgomery Mall, Montgomery, AL, summer 1983. Kinda looked it over
and decided that that might be a way to get back into the air. Joined
USUA, started getting Glider Rider Mag, joined EAA, bought all the
airplane mags I saw in the news stands. Kept seeing this little back
and white advertisement of a Kolb Ultrastar. Discovered an individual
was in the process of building one at Noonan, GA. Bro Jim and I took
a ride over there and inspected it. Decided then and there, that was
going to be the airplane I built when I could come up with the money.
Prior to finding the Ultrastar, I looked at Cobras, Eippers, Eagles,
and a Wizzard. Even drove down to South Florida to take a look at the
Wizzard Factory. Was not impressed. Left shaking my head.
The selling factors for the Ultrastar were primarily A&E hardware,
4130 steel, certified covering and finish, aircraft cables instead of
sash cord, real 3 axis controls.
Sure am glad I made that decision. March 1984, 21 years ago I started
building my Ultrastar as soon as I got back from my first Sun and Fun
Flyin. Back then the flyin was held in March. Three months later I
had finished my US and was getting ready to make the first flight.
Been a lot of flights ago.

Hello John H et al,
The Mark3X/VW was built by Don Mullis at Wakulla County Arpt. (AKA Panacea, Tarpine).
It is a unique machine with aluminum skinned Fuselage and a converted VW
Engine. He had some problems getting used to a high thrust-lined, draggy pusher
but was happy with the final results. He has since sold his place and moved
to new ground on the shore of Lake Seminole. Don is an industrious guy and will
get his new strip done pronto. I will post the Lat Long when it is a little
further along.
I will be at Lakeland on the 13th, 14th and 15th. Count on me for hauling guys
to the Bar-B-Que place.
The wind here was up to 30 MPH today. When I had my sail boat it never seemed to
get over 5 MPH.

Duane Zee Plane/Gang:
Ya'll come.

Duane/Gang:
I remember looking at this airplane when he was in the infant
construction stages, during a flight down to Panacea to eat mullet.
Was wondering how many hours were on the airplane at this time and how
the sheet metal skin is holding up.
Also how the VW conversion is performing.
Take care,
john h
PS: Need to get him on the Kolb List so he can share his experiences
with us.

It looks like about what I have been looking for after my bad experience
with the Lowerance airmap 300. With the blue tooth can you also tie in a
cell phone and get current weather radar?
